I don't particularly like, or listen to, rap/hip hop but I have a name for the Prog-Rap band of the future: cRAP-tastic!
Yeah, I'm being facetious, but this idea has actually passed through some of the synapses in my brain. Yet to be fully digested, though.

Name calling will gain you nothing as I refuse to stoop to your level. I take solice in the fact that you read & replied to my post.
By the way, look up the meaning of the word Facetious.
Hey, think I'll click on over to Settings & change my username! sTUPid does have a nice ring to it.
(Sorry, I can't help myself, I was being facetious again).

I like both kinds of music. Dr. Dre is very awesome and so is N.W.A. If a person/group was clever enough to harmoniously combine the two, I think that would be a great achievement indeed.

I agree that there are alot of good hip hop out there! But why must it
go prog? Why cant we let good hip hop be good hip hop and good prog be
good prog? How would you guys feel if hip-hopers compelined about good
prog not being hip hop enough?
"Its really good and everything, its not hip hop but its sooooooooo close!"
Get my point. Let the new musical genres
progresse music, you dont progresse music by doing it the way rock was
made in the 70s, thats not progressive in any way!

very ture, and also why in the world is it infeasable?
I do it all the time. Even with people who dont know music or time signitures.
One exapmle: My freind mike, at lunch, wanted me to lay down a beat box. So i did, but little to his knowlage, i was beating in 5/4( da doom ba shmm shmmm) and he started freestyling. With complete ease!and he's not even a rapper, nor does he know anything about rap, infact ...he's white.

I bought a cd by a band called Crash Museum because they had ties to Psychotic Waltz. I was expecting prog rock or metal. There lyricist was a rapper. His name is Ebony Prince. Awful stuff. I like some rap, can't help it being from California. All the stuff I like is at least 15 years old though.

Only problem with that is that Snoop Dogg sucks.
Hmm... That would be a good idea. Personally, I despise 50 Cent and other mothaf**ka-dudes, but I do like the genre itself. Artists like Don Johnson Big Band, Paleface and Giant Robot (both finnish) are awesome, so it would probably work.
I think it's dumb to diss rap just because of the mainstream crappers. It is true that about 80% of it is pure crap (also most of the underground is about mothaf**kas, drugs and ghettos), but there is a lot of rappers, whose lyrics are "intelligent".

Sure, why not ? It's only a matter of time before cRAP stars start sampling prog. Just imagine when Eminem or some other non-talent in the rap industry finds "Firth of Fifth" or "Close to the Edge" and rips it off for his next hit.

Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.
What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.

Oh, but there IS prog rap, just listen to Honor Thy Father or This Dying Soul Still, I think it would be cool for someone to rap *intelligently* over odd time signatures...as long as it had really good musical backing and instrumental passages *or poetry...passages? i dont know* And I don't think we'll have to worry about Eminem sampling Yes because he's probably never heard of them.

OK man. lets assume some strange rapper creates odd rhythm patterns (That's 95% of what Rap is about) and reading poetry passages, that's not new.
García Lorca poems (for example) are usually read in Spain while a very talented acoustic guitar player (Tomatito use to do that) jams Flamenco passages with his guitar. It's been done for centuries and it's called "Llanto de la guitarra" (Guitar weeping), it's incredibly beautiful because authors as García Lorca made real poetry (Not only blaming the world for their disgrace while using 50 Kgms of gold on their necks as MOST rappers do). I even have a couple of albums of "Coplas con guitarra" but it's not Prog, it's not even considered music, it's a form of poetry, so it's not Progressive Rock.
Why should rapping with intelligent lyrics (Yes it's possible but not likely IMO) be considered Prog? Or even music? Rap is mainlyy a form of street poetry, the music (They change the imaginativeSpanish guitar jamming for repetitive chords) is only used to background their fast talking, so the main ingredient of his is not music.
Lets face it:
- There is not Progressive Rap or Hip Hop.
- We don't NEED Progressive Rap.
- Most probably will never exist, despite they sample anything, The Scissor Sisters (Not Rap or Hip Hop, only techno Bee Gees wannabes) made a cover version of Comfortably Numb and that's not Prog'.
- May this new genre ever exist? Maybe, also if pigs mutate they may learn to fly outside a Pink Floyd concert.
So what's the point for this discussion, there's a lot of Prog that almost nobody knows, searching in Symphonic database we found a lot of bands without bio, discography or samples only saying that they once released a cassette, so lets worry to learn about what already exist and forget about fantastic creatures.
Now, if people still want to talk about Rap anf Hip Hop, there are non prog lounges and outside PA thousands of Rap and Hip Hop forums, where if you mention the words Progressive Rock you'll probably be banned or insulted (Most likely both).

I like intelligent rap once in awhile. You know, rap with consciousness. The Roots come to mind. Also Rage Against the Machine. Rapping over odd times shouldn't be too hard, but it would take one hell of a good rapper to improv in odd times. Honestly, I would probably listen to rap if it wasn't so negative, angry, artificial, superficial, and had decent musicians playing in a band (like The Roots).

FOOL! Uneducated people don't know how to use the internet!! (looow blooow) anyways I wasn't defending rap in any sense; honestly, even the good stuff I can't take *but come on.....MC Hammer......COME ON.....and Run DMC is fun* but though I was taking up the side that it would be interesting to see the alleged "prog rap", I totally agree that it probably couldn't happen. EDIT: After viewing some more myspaces, I take back my comment on uneducated people using the internet.....yeesh.

Hey dude, don't get angry, I always say what I think, and honestly I find absolutely no interest in Rap or Hip Hop even if you talk about *intelligent* rap. But my answer is not against your's, you only posted recently, this thread has a lot of pages and months.
If there was a rap album recorded by Albert Einstein (You can't ask more intelligence than that ) I wouldn't buy it, because I don't like Rap, I don't consider it even music (Maybe street poetry), IMHO Rap is written with silent (c) the beginning.
Is this a prejudice, I accept it, but I'm already 41 and you can't teach new tricks to an old dog.
Please read the previous posts of this thread, some people was talking seriously about Prog Hip Hop, and this thread is not alone, it has been mentioned a lot of times in different threads and lounges, and honestly I'm tired of this.
I don't care if some people call me ignorant (Not you of course, you just added your honest opinion), closed minded, enemy of musical evolution, racoist, enemy of the poor people from the ghettos who don'thave money to buy instruments (been called all of those ways).
The truth is I don't care for Rap or Hoip Hop and will never do, don't consider it a valid form of art.

Umm, someone mentioned a band with 14 minute rap songs a while back. I'll check it out.
I have heard two hip-hop Cds, things falling apart by the roots and The low end theory by a tribe called quest. They were both good and proof that "underground rap" (just like King crimson is underground prog) is good stuff. THe low end theory especially. It is from the heyday of real hip-hop (I use the word real instead of underground from now on) and it is about blending be-bop with rap. I lost it and only heard the CD once, but I remember it being totally mind-opening. I would call it progressive in the sense of the word being an ajective, not a noun, if you know what I mean. The roots one was in odd time sigs, had interesting beats, was live (organic), and unique but powerful. I lost that one too, this is a long story, but I basically lost my entire CD collection. I restored my most important albums illegally, but I forgot a bunch of them. I heard it several times, and the stuff is still in my head, I haven't forgotten how it sounds. I once heard a really great jazz saxophonist, playing live. He had a fifteen minute long jam. Well, more like he soloed for fifteen minutes. But, it was freaking amazing, he just soared higher and stronger then anyone except coltrane (cut me some slack, because I don't know much saxophonists other then him and coltrane who like to solo for 15+ minutes). The crowd was screaming for an encore, and he pulled out a hiphop song. This was a guy much more talented then your average prog artist. The saxophonist even tried freestyle, but it wasn't very good. The drummer was going all out, just like any progressive or jazz drummer would. The keyboardist in the back was evoking all of this spooky stuff in the back, and he even had a solo. The sax guy turned to the audience and is like "yo, whats tha?, whats tha?". So, it owned mostly. The drummer, by the way, was one of the best I've seen, and was formerly a hip hop drummer.
So, in conclusion, progressive hip hop already exists. Progressive rock hip-hop doesn't, most likely. Hip hop isn't bad at all. In fact, it is one of the best artforms, once you get past your predjudices. You all talk about how a good singer is important to prog, and rapers are just rappers, right? Rapping is very diffucult, and I could never acheive a timbre like some rappers. I guess I am white though, so it might be some racial thing.

I wasn't getting angry whatsoeverl Mostly just joking around. Although I still cant believe you havent bought Alby E's New album "Relativity And Hustlin'"......basNOTNICEPERSONtard EDIT: When i meant unintelligent people not knowing how to use the internet, I meant mainstream rappers, such as ones suggested using a forum in a similar manner to this, hypothetically discusiing the "artistic merits" of ******ing a ***er in a **** *****hole and gettin new shiny diamond teeth or whatever. So no hard feelings meant there.
