Progressive rock could be birth related

Progressive rock is much like jazz or classical music, thus there will only be a limited audience for this music as it does not have easy to listen to catchy riffs or it performers  are not able to dance around on stage and still be able to play the music

Progressive rock came of age with a boomer population where the small percentage of fans was still big enough to financially support making such records and touring.

When a similar boomer population occurs, then such complex music will be more accessible

Ok, I am one of those guys that remembers much of the 70's prog scene being 49. It's nice to see younger people with an appreciation for progressive rock. We need more of you though. Spread the word!

It seems like it really boils down to 15-20 year olds not wanting to listen to rap or new rock that they are putting out.

25 here, but I've liked The Moody Blues since I was about 13 or so (due to my parents and living in the birth town of Justin Hayward... and seeing them in concert in my teenage years).  I was a huge Queen fan in the 1980s, which is a bit worrying now I come to think of it!  My big brother always liked Pink Floyd, so I always got to hear Dark Side Of The Moon as well as Jean Michel Jarre (not that he's that prog mind you), oh and Mike Oldfield's Tublar Bells, so that's where I've got my prog interest from.  I'm now more into prog than any of the family, which I quite like the thought of.

im impressed... in other polls of this style there was a similar quantity of votes between 20 years and 40 + years..

now there are lots of 15-20 wow!

I'm (gasp!) 45.Smile

I do think, though, that it's largely the metal that initially brings the now pre-dominant younger set here (but once here, many younger members seem to branch out into classic prog).

At first (2+ years ago) we were mostly 40-something year old males here (prog's heyday was around 1970-75), but the site's demographics have changed radically since then. I don't believe the classic prog bands on their own (ie, no prog metal) would have brought in many younger members.Ermm

So, my GENERALIZATION (there are always exceptions), drawn from my experience here, is that most classic prog fans are in their 40s & 50s, while most prog metal fans are in their teens & 20s. (There is, of course, increasing movement both ways now, though again, I think a teen is likely more open to old prog, than an oldster like myself is toward prog metal. Tastes in art, etc, tend to be fairly firmly set by middle age.)Smile
