after years of searching for my ideal prog sound, here are my favourite cd players and i can highly recommend them....! SONY CDP-X3000ES top-loading machine, vibrant, punchy sound, loads of detail, very tight bass, good stereo imagery, though has a slightly restricted sound stage. handles most types of music, though excels on acoustic guitars and drums. MARANTX CD6000 OSE front-loading,excellent all-rounder, tight bass, astonishing detail and imagery, spacious, wide sound stage, excellent detail. handles busy recordings well.my model has trichord clock 2. used with JVC A-X2 class "A" amplifier and HEYBROOK HB2 speakers.

Sony is not that musical, Marantz is better but suffers of coloured sound. Here are the players i recommend in the same price range: (or maybe more expensive ) -Naim CD 5: the smallest Naim player, already good. Very musical, much matter makes it sounds analog, soft highs and good dynamic. Perfect for rock and so prog. Features an original steel drawer, contrary to most plastic drawers. Arcam CD33, the biggest of the brand, wide freq and very neutral. To go further: Linn Ikemi Edited by oliverstoned |

Wait, I forgot that one (almost as important): Look, it even has gold connectors! Read all about the X-Fi here: http://techreport.com/reviews/2005q4/soundblaster-x-fi/index .x?pg=1 and if you don't want to read the whole 22 page review, here's the conclusion: http://techreport.com/reviews/2005q4/soundblaster-x-fi/index .x?pg=22 Edited by MikeEnRegalia |

Everything which is bright is not gold!
It looks like Gold, but believe me, it's not 5 layers gold WBT interconnect: |

So only 5 layers of gold sound acceptable? |

3 layers is already very good. Be aware that WBT are the absolute best connectic ever. The quality of gold is important also.
Silver is excellent also. |

It's off-topic, but ... silver actually has a much better conductivity than gold. Gold has better resistance to corrosion, so silver is usually used for the wire itself, and gold for the connectors. But unless you connect-disconnect the cables daily or hourly, there is absolutely no difference between a gold-plated connector with 1 layer or with 100 layers. BTW: The conductivity of gold is even worse than copper, so in theory a copper connector in good condition will sound better than any gold connector. |

Unique multi-layer plating process with a final plating of 24k gold Jewel-like, multi-layer gold plating prevents corrosion and indeed, the absolute best RCA WBT connectics are in silver, you're right. This is a new revolutionary RCA design ("Nextgen") with only a few contact points (it's like a wire) instead of full contact on the former generation: Nextgen (this is silver) (That's what i put on my amp and yes it's better!) Former generation with full contact: Edited by oliverstoned |
