after years of searching for my ideal prog sound, here are my favourite cd players and i can highly recommend them....!
top-loading machine,vibrant, punchy sound, loads of detail, very tight bass, good stereo imagery, though has a slightly restricted sound stage. handles most types of music, though excels on acoustic guitars and drums.
front-loading,excellent all-rounder, tight bass, astonishing detail and imagery, spacious, wide sound stage, excellent detail. handles busy recordings well.my model has trichord clock 2. used with JVC A-X2 class "A" amplifier and HEYBROOK HB2 speakers.

| I listen on a Sony SACD player it's OK and only cost 300 quid. I also have 2 CD Audio recorders one a philips and the other a Sony. |

Sony is not that musical, Marantz is better but suffers of coloured sound. Here are the players i recommend in the same price range: (or maybe more expensive  )
-Naim CD 5: the smallest Naim player, already good. Very musical, much matter makes it sounds analog, soft highs and good dynamic. Perfect for rock and so prog. Features an original steel drawer, contrary to most plastic drawers. 
Arcam CD33, the biggest of the brand, wide freq and very neutral.

Any serious digital setup is separate drive/converter! BTW, i'd like to upgrade my Goldmund converter to a Brinkmann Zenith III

3 layers is already very good. Be aware that WBT are the absolute best connectic ever. The quality of gold is important also.
Silver is excellent also. |

It's off-topic, but ... silver actually has a much better conductivity than gold. Gold has better resistance to corrosion, so silver is usually used for the wire itself, and gold for the connectors. But unless you connect-disconnect the cables daily or hourly, there is absolutely no difference between a gold-plated connector with 1 layer or with 100 layers. Unique multi-layer plating process with a final plating of 24k gold Jewel-like, multi-layer gold plating prevents corrosion and indeed, the absolute best RCA WBT connectics are in silver, you're right. This is a new revolutionary RCA design ("Nextgen") with only a few contact points (it's like a wire) instead of full contact on the former generation: Nextgen (this is silver)
