If it's enjoyable, listen to it. That's that. I enjoy everything from
progressive bands such as Tangerine Dream and King Crimson to
mainstream pop bands like Vertical Horizon and Alterbridge. To me,
nothing's a guilty pleasure. I would go insane if I could only listen
to prog for the rest of my life. But I would also go insane if I could
only listen to poppy stuff my whole life.

It's a brilliant thread, Imagine yourself after for instance an Opeth concert, you're at the bar beer ( or other drink) in hand commenting on how good the concert was, talking about related bands etc.. and suddenly there you are asking "By the way how do you like Time by Elo". Can't be done really . But in this thread it's all possible .

I like Camel's 'Breathless' and 'I Can See Your House From Here'- many fans felt they took a turn for the worse with those albums with some poppy tunes, but I think songs like 'Your Love Is Stranger Than Mine', 'Wait', 'Rainbow's End' and 'You Make Me Smile' have real charm...
I also like some of Genesis' later work in the 80s and 90s- there was still some quality pop/rock music ('Land Of Confusion', 'Mama', 'Tonight Tonight Tonight', 'No Son Of Mine'...), some top quality prog tunes ('Home By The Sea', 'Heathaze', 'Cul De Sac', 'Man Of Our Times', 'Domino', and best of all, 'Fading Lights') amongst the dross. Can't defend 'Calling All Stations' though- I think it's horrible...

Like everyone I have my guilty pleasures... bands and/or songs that you love and enjoy alone because most of your prog friends doesn't like that bands and/or songs... Personally that happens to me with some song of Asia (specially "Sole Survivor") and some songs of 80's Yes, GTR, Peter Gabriel's pop years of "So" and "Us"... You know what I mean, those music that you will never recognize in public but... is always in your mind... |

Surely. However, there's only one Rush album I dare never change the rating for... Hold Your Fire... that one will remain the same.

all i'm saying is that there's nothing wrong with liking any certain
type of music. I'm not saying the person who posted it is stupid, and
not even the post I don't think. Just the idea in general.

Indeed. There is no shame in liking pop music, it's all a matter of taste. Music can be as entertaining without odd time signatures, epics, etc.
I like DT's 'I walk besides you', for example. Be as poppish as it may, I still find the song to be charged with emotions.
However, coffeeintheface, I must disagree on the part of Alter Bridge being poppish and mainstream.
|
Hey man, that's cool you disagree on Alterbridge "being mainstream", because the only reason I kind of lumped them there is because it is basically Creed with a new singer. And EVERYONE seems to have hated Creed (even though I loved their debut album, and their 2nd and 3rd albums had good material in between). And Mark Tremonti is one of the better guitarists in mainstream rock, in both his work with Creed and Alterbridge. |
They are mainstream, but in their own 'Avant-Gardish' way. No, the band members certainly aren't pushing the boundries of music, they have their own UNIQUE sound, style and approach of composing however, so I wouldn't call them your typical rock mainstream band with their structured songs. They are also have nothing to do with pop (well, besides open your eyes). Alterbridge is also heavier than Creed with metal influence (Metallica..)
Anyway, I also used to like Creed. Nowadays, I cannot enjoy it as I used to, perhaps its got something to do with me being more attracted to Prog (and less open-mided to 'simple mainstream rock', snobbism). I enjoy Alterbridge, however, find the real is my favourite nowadays..
Btw, yes, Tremonti is good, he has good technique and is capable of composing.
