Like everyone I have my guilty pleasures... bands and/or songs that you love and enjoy alone because most of your prog friends doesn't like that bands and/or songs... Personally that happens to me with some song of Asia (specially "Sole Survivor") and some songs of 80's Yes, GTR, Peter Gabriel's pop years of "So" and "Us"... You know what I mean, those music that you will never recognize in public but... is always in your mind...

I have always liked Steve Hackett's "Cured," but man does it get lambasted
by most people. It surprises me to see that Progadicto considers "So" and
"Us" to be pop albums. They did hit the charts, but I think that was just an
abberant surge of the masses having some good taste.

Stupid post. Who cares what one person considers a "guilty pleasure". If it's enjoyable, listen to it. That's that. I enjoy everything from progressive bands such as Tangerine Dream and King Crimson to mainstream pop bands like Vertical Horizon and Alterbridge. To me, nothing's a guilty pleasure. I would go insane if I could only listen to prog for the rest of my life. But I would also go insane if I could only listen to poppy stuff my whole life.

Asia

Emerson, Lake and Powell

A few of the really sappy Phil Collins ballads "Take A Look At Me Now", "Seperate Lives", etc.

and a few non-prog instrumentals like the 70's "Joy" (by Apollo 100?), "Popcorn" and the classic "Telstar".

There. I said it. Even my wife laughs at me.

I rather like Yes' 90125, though of course is not my favourite album by the band. However, I agree with Coffeeintheface that the whole question of "guilty pleasure" is quite pointless. I tend to dislike overtly commercial music, but sometimes I happen to enjoy songs that, according to some people, I am not supposed to.

I like a lot of the poppy Oldfield albums like Platinum, Qe2, Five miles out, Discovery etc...
I like Tubular bells II more than Tubular bells I.
I'm also rather fond of ELO especially Time.

Indeed. There is no shame in liking pop music, it's all a matter of taste. Music can be as entertaining without odd time signatures, epics, etc.

I like DT's 'I walk besides you', for example. Be as poppish as it may, I still find the song to be charged with emotions.

However, coffeeintheface, I must disagree on the part of Alter Bridge being poppish and mainstream.

Hey man, that's cool you disagree on Alterbridge "being mainstream", because the only reason I kind of lumped them there is because it is basically Creed with a new singer. And EVERYONE seems to have hated Creed (even though I loved their debut album, and their 2nd and 3rd albums had good material in between). And Mark Tremonti is one of the better guitarists in mainstream rock, in both his work with Creed and Alterbridge.

Journey is a big "guilty pleasure" of mine. One of the first bands I got into
as
a kid, and I am instantly transported as soon as I pop Escape or Frontiers
into the player. I even like this latest incarnation of Journey with Steve
Augeri
on vocals. Very impressed with Arrival and their latest disc, Generations.

Mike + The Mechanics is another one. Such a shame about Paul Young,
though. A great voice silenced forever. RIP, Paul.

Others are REO Speedwagon, Squeeze, The Style Council, and newer
bands
like Train, Dave Matthews Band, and Matchbox Twenty.

There...I said it.

Hey, count with me for the TB2 appreciation society.

Anyway, thanks to the techno music and the neverending Tubular albums, just being a Oldfield fan like I am forces me to sya it as a guilty pleasure!.

Another guilty thing I like to listen to now and then is Rhapsody. And, of course, that really catchy pop album called GIANT FOR A DAY! . I mean, I even like 'I'ts only goodbye', which is the song even the only reviewer ever I've read praising this album dislikes!.

By the way, regarding the utility of threads like this: well, it's fun. The term 'gulity pleasure' is just one of those 'nudge-nudge-wink-wink' things that just doesn't deserve being taken too seriously. I know a lot about this things, specially from my experience in movie programming.

The question is guilty Prog plesaures, right?

One of my first favorite albums was ELO's 'Time'. I must have been six when my parents bought that (and 'The Wall'). I still love it.

Two or three songs by italian comically overblown, operapowerspeedmetallers Rhapsody, can often get me in a stupid, happy mood. Are they for real? I think they are.

These two acts does not go well with my official VdGG, Cantebury, Kraut, Magma prog taste. I don't mind, but its not the part of my music taste I focus on while talking to strangers.

Progrock is generally considered the ultimate guilty pleasure in music, isn't it?

It's a brilliant thread, Imagine yourself after for instance an Opeth concert, you're at the bar beer ( or other drink) in hand commenting on how good the concert was, talking about related bands etc..
and suddenly there you are asking "By the way how do you like Time by Elo". Can't be done really

But in this thread it's all possible.

I like Camel's 'Breathless' and 'I Can See Your House From Here'- many fans felt they took a turn for the worse with those albums with some poppy tunes, but I think songs like 'Your Love Is Stranger Than Mine', 'Wait', 'Rainbow's End' and 'You Make Me Smile' have real charm...

I also like some of Genesis' later work in the 80s and 90s- there was still some quality pop/rock music ('Land Of Confusion', 'Mama', 'Tonight Tonight Tonight', 'No Son Of Mine'...), some top quality prog tunes ('Home By The Sea', 'Heathaze', 'Cul De Sac', 'Man Of Our Times', 'Domino', and best of all, 'Fading Lights')  amongst the dross. Can't defend 'Calling All Stations' though- I think it's horrible...

I would go insane if I could only listen to prog for the rest of my life. But I would also go insane if I could only listen to poppy stuff my whole life.

They are mainstream, but in their own 'Avant-Gardish' way. No, the band members certainly aren't pushing the boundries of music, they have their own UNIQUE sound, style and approach of composing however, so I wouldn't call them your typical rock mainstream band with their structured songs. They are also have nothing to do with pop (well, besides open your eyes). Alterbridge is also heavier than Creed with metal influence (Metallica..)

Anyway, I also used to like Creed. Nowadays, I cannot enjoy it as I used to, perhaps its got something to do with me being more attracted to Prog (and less open-mided to 'simple mainstream rock', snobbism). I enjoy Alterbridge, however, find the real is my favourite nowadays..

Btw, yes, Tremonti is good, he has good technique and is capable of composing.

The former and the latter contain two suites (and a total of three > 10 min tracks)...the second is almost entirely instrumental...

I fail to see their poppiness...

Yep, Phil Collins era Genesis, especially the albums Genesis and Invisible Touch. I suppose later Yes can be called a guilty pleasure too.

And ELO too; the pop I don't think is too bad, but the disco...Discovery and Xanadu are a guilty pleasure as well.

Guilty prog pleasures...

In my case quite a lot of Norwegian Black Metal bands, like Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant), Emperor (Anthems at the Welkin of Dusk) and The Covenant (Nexus Polaris)...

Though not included at PA - and perhaps for good reasons  - I definitely consider these bands at least prog-related, for their very bombastic and symphonic music. Very jolly indeed!

Mine are:

Spirit - Future Games (very bizarre collection of short musical themes, something like 23 total tracks interspersed with dialog & Star Trek outtakes...gotta hear it!)

Anything by the Raspberries (Eric Carmen)

Small Faces (Steve Marriott), so many classic pop tunes...

Peter Frampton in & out of Humble Pie (up to early 80's)

This might sound funny, but here it is anyway...

1 - Welcome to the pleasure dome (Frankie goes to Hollywood).

2 - Boys for Pele (Tori Amos)

3 - Far beyond these castle walls (Chris de Burgh).

I agree with you on this one. I've always liked it quite a lot, and I remember the video was rather weird as well. Incidentally, this song has the same subject matter as Rush's "Xanadu"... As a matter of fact, in the intro you can hear the first words of Coleridge's poem "Kubla Khan", which inspired both songs.

Yes i see your point, especially about  Qe2 and Five miles out (it's been a while since i heard them)
they've got long tracks that are certainly not poppy, only  maybe somewhat more mainstream than
for instance Amarok and Incantations. They are also quite liked on this site so no guiltiness here.

There are indeed a lot of instrumental tracks on Platinum but Platinum though not really poppy is
rather mainstream (funkadelic), tunes are quite accessible and not too complex here. It's also not liked as much as Qe2 and Five miles out so this one  stays (BTW i like this album a lot) .

Instead of Qe2 and Five miles out i submit the second side of Islands. In fact i like  a lot of Oldfields work.  My friends think i should feel guilty about all of them.

One comes to mind immediately.

1. Triumvirat - Pompeii (1977)

Ok, they might have sounded like EL&P, but this German band had chops and held their own. Great remaster CD.

Should I feel guilty about liking 80's Genesis?

Only if I have my head up my arse.

In this case, you don't really "agree with me" that I should feel "guilty".... . But I am glad someone likes this album anyway.

I tend to dislike overtly commercial music, but sometimes I happen to enjoy songs that, according to some people, I am not supposed to.

I propose a toast to your open-mindedness. Cheers!

The title track of "Five Miles Out" is a little wild... I quite like it.   As for QE2 - Will the @&*$#!! who broke into my car and stole this (&other CDs) bring it back!! Its obviously WAY beyond your miniscule brain's comprehension!!! (Thanks, I feel better now.)
