Since there is no "Progressive Alternative Rock" Genre ... I go with Prog Related, because they fit nowhere else.

I don't think they belong They have very few progressive moments put in between endless streams of regurtitated pop punk vocal melodies and guitar riffs. And their so called story line seems to make absolutely no sense to anyone I know. I feel like they'r trying to seem progressive with their long album and song titles and so-called concept. but the music is not progressive at all if you ask me |

Music is sometimes enjoyable but is no way progressive, especially when compared with a modern prog band like the Mars Volta

After several listenings to "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth" I believe there are enough Prog elements to call them Prog-Related - but they are Not Prog.

I don't think that The Mars Volta is a benchmark for prog. Take away their quirky experimentality ... what's left? |

No, I have Good Apollo, blah blah blah, boiiing boiiiing and all the "prog" elements seem to be at the beginning and end of songs, the actual songs themselves are not great. I like some of them however, but this album has to be the most disappointed buy of last year, what was I thinking?
I know why I bought it now! Danny Louis, the keyboard player for Gov't Mule (my favourite non-prog band) guests on it and he told me try them out, haha, I spoke to him after a concert. Oh well! |

They aren't really related to prog in any way are they? Just because their albums are conceptual doesnt mean they are Prog, even "-ish" It's all abit teeny bopperish too! Uh-oh here we go "man your battle stations........" I feel a backlash-a coming! Edited by Tony R |

It depends on how you define "experimenterialism". A band can be inventive and original without being too experimental. Some bands - like The Mars Volta - try very hard to do things that no band did before ... be really unique and absolutely genre-defying experimental. I think that these bands are not more prog than bands like Shadow Gallery or The Flower Kings. |

Their music is progressive ... I couldn't care less about the conceptuality. I never "bought" that rule of thumb that the longer the songs (or the greater the scale of the concept) the more prog. Fact is that their compositions exhibit many of the trademarks of prog rock. You don't have to like them (as a matter of fact I really don't like them), but you have to try to separate the assessment of their progressiveness from how you would rate their albums. Or do the archives only accept "good" bands? |

Well,I quite like them, some songs are quite catchy in a trashy kind of way.But I dont believe they are prog-related. I take your very good point about accepting only "good" bnds though Mike, personal taste should not get in the way of the assessment process. |

^ The whole Coheed and Cambria discussion just seems a bit ridiculous to me because I keep reading about them in (print) magazines. So why do these magazines discuss the band when they are rejected on this website which claims to be inclusive, but doesn't even accept them as prog related? It just doesn't make sense for me. Either we are strict, or inclusive. |

The point is is that I am not blocking them at all,to be honest I dont really care one way or the other.I am not trying to influence opinion or throw my weight around.... I am just voicing my own opinion which is neither more nor less valid than anyone elses. |

Until someone will provide me with different material than what can be heard on their homepage, I am strongly opposed to the idea of their inclusion. What can be heard there has nothing whatever to do with prog.

I have their recent album Friede and I have to agree, they're not very prog.
Now, The Mystery Jets on the other hand are far more prog to my ears, but I cannot see them being added on here either. I do appreciate a few of their tracks though, but some are too emo for my ears. The best track is the final one and that's only because of the Dave Gilmour-esque guitar playing! My friend claims she likes prog, because she listens to Co&Ca and Rush... hmm, she's very misinformed! |
