 Topic: Most influential fusion band

After Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, alumni from those sessions resulted in these 3 groundbreaking bands. No need to list who was on what Davis album, many of them went on to form these bands. Who was most influential? Tough choice!
While John McLaughlin went on the more spiritual route with Mahavishnu. Chick Corea went on a more slightly funkier road with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White with RTF. Joseph Zawinal and Wayne Shorter explored more worldly sounds with Weather Report.
These were the real forrunners. So take your pick.

Mahavishnu Orchestra if I had to pick one,but all three were pretty influential fusion bands.

All three listed bands are equally important IMO. I can't pick one, although Return To Forever I know the least.

Wow, that IS a tough choice. I'm gonna go with return to Forever, as
they brought the music to the widest audience due to the rock aspect
with Dimeola.

Taking the thread literally, you have ask who have these particular bands influenced musically
and then come to your conclusions. A quick thought about albums/bands
with references back to the three main (well best selling) Miles Davis
derivatives (and yes, do not forget both variants of Lifetime or Tony
Williams Wildlife bands - the original Lifetime has had two tributes at
least), and I get the following:
MO: Isotope, Mahavishnu Project, Mastermind, Kennedy
RTF: Electromagnets
Weather Report: Tribal Tech, Christian McBride
But I think there are more bands influenced by Soft Machine who would be my FAVOURITE

Mahavishnu Orchestra of course. They were the first fusion band I acquired followed closely by Return To Forever and then Weather Report. Another great one which I enjoy at least as much as Maha is  Arti & Mestieri!

Brand X was no doubt great, but I kept the poll to the biggest groundbreakers who were well ahead of the game than Brand X. Although Dick Heath has a good point about Soft Machine being influential.

Out of those three, Mahavishnu, but as a fan of British Jazz and Jazz
Fusion, my preference would lean towards Soft Machine or Nucleus (Ian
Carr in general really).
Return to Forever and Weather Report had a big influence on American
Jazz and Jazz fusion obviously, as they were the most influential
groups. Mahavishnu is tough to pin, mainly because sometimes they
sound very American and sometimes somewhat British, although I do feel
overall, they have a much more American feel.
Brand X is the least influential of famous Jazz fusion acts IMO.
Don't get me wrong, I like them, it's just that they became very samey
and less interesting after the first two albums (and Product is a bit too directionless....).

I think Weather Report had the best song writing and structure.
Mahavishnu did alot of jamming. Chicky and Return to Forever were pleasant but didn't
have as strong melodies as Weather Report.

Artistic influence: Mahavishnu Orchestra (where my vote comes from)
Commerical influence: Weather Report (a different question altogether)
