 Topic: Need mellow prog recommendations

I'm looking for some recommendations for soft, laid back mellow prog. Basically the kind of stuff you can play late at night without needing to play too loud or wake up the neighbors. It can be from any decade from any subgenre.

Try Soft Machine. Canterbury Jazz that is rarely very loud. Third (1970) and Fourth (1971) are both highly recommended!

Soft Machine? Really? I'm not familiar with third but have heard the first two and fourth and I don't know if I would say these are quiet by any stretch of the imagination. Fourth in particular sounds like a very noisy jazz album(at least to me). Very upbeat and sqawky. Nothing wrong with it just not something to chill out too. Jade Warrior I'll have to check out. Ofcourse there's Sigur Ros. I only have the ( ) album so far and it's a great one to fall asleep to(not hard to do with that one....lol).

Traffic... I was listening to 'Shootout at the Fantasy Factory' last
night... after the opening title track with Reebop's congos making me
thrash my arms violently with some 'air congos' with some good
Winwood 'air guitar' thrown in..... it is a wonderful mellow and
rather laid back album.
...sitting all alone by fireside... listen to the wind.. through the chimney top....

Some post rock is very mellow and dreamy. Like Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Sigur Ros. Their music is pretty sad, but it's beautiful sadness, not pyre depression. Canterbury is indeed pretty mellow, bands like Gond and Caravan are great. And try Operh's Damnation... haunting, mellow album. But remember that nothing else they put out is nearly as mellow!

I agree with the Traffic and Caravan suggestions above, some other suggestions:
Harmonium: "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquieme saison"
Camel: the "Snow goose" and Rajaz
Porcupine tree : "The sky moves sideways" is very mellow edit: i see that this one was already mentioned, terrific album.
Novalis: "Sommerabend", "Novalis" is better but not so mellow

I'd try Camel's Moondmadness or Snow Goose. Both great night-time albums.

thanks for the agreement... gave it out of personal
experience.... Shootout at the Fantasy Factory is a great bottle of
wine, roaring fire, and girl who won't say no kind of album....
very laid back and mood inducing.. especially Tragic Magic.
