I'm looking for some recommendations for soft, laid back mellow prog. Basically the kind of stuff you can play late at night without needing to play too loud or wake up the neighbors. It can be from any decade from any subgenre.

Try Soft Machine. Canterbury Jazz that is rarely very loud. Third (1970) and Fourth (1971) are both highly recommended!

Soft Machine? Really? I'm not familiar with third but have heard the first two and fourth and I don't know if I would say these are quiet by any stretch of the imagination. Fourth in particular sounds like a very noisy jazz album(at least to me). Very upbeat and sqawky. Nothing wrong with it just not something to chill out too. Jade Warrior I'll have to check out. Ofcourse there's Sigur Ros. I only have the ( ) album so far and it's a great one to fall asleep to(not hard to do with that one....lol).

Traffic... I was listening to 'Shootout at the Fantasy Factory' last night... after the opening title track with Reebop's congos making me thrash my arms violently  with some 'air congos' with some good Winwood 'air guitar' thrown in.....  it is a wonderful mellow and rather laid back album.

Some post rock is very mellow and dreamy. Like Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Sigur Ros. Their music is pretty sad, but it's beautiful sadness, not pyre depression.

Canterbury is indeed pretty mellow, bands like Gond and Caravan are great.

And try Operh's Damnation... haunting, mellow album. But remember that nothing else they put out is nearly as mellow!

I agree with the Traffic and Caravan suggestions above, some other suggestions:

Harmonium: "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquieme saison"
Camel: the "Snow goose" and Rajaz
Porcupine tree : "The sky moves sideways" is very mellow edit: i see that this one was already                                     mentioned, terrific album.
Novalis: "Sommerabend", "Novalis" is better but not so mellow

I'd try Camel's Moondmadness or Snow Goose.  Both great night-time albums.

thanks for the agreement... gave it out of  personal experience.... Shootout at the Fantasy Factory is a great bottle of wine, roaring fire, and girl who won't say no  kind of album.... very laid back and mood inducing.. especially Tragic Magic.

70s Tangerine Dream is terrific for "chilling out." Try Phaedra, Rubycon, Ricochet, Stratosfear, and my fave Force Majeure (somewhat livelier).Cool

Anthony Phillips -- The Geese and the Ghost is quite lovely too.

"New age" guitarist William Ackerman has some very beautiful stuff too -- his Past Light is very highly recommended (tres relaxing).

Thumbs Up

I agree Canterbury is good. Cetainly HATFIELD AND THE NORTH , Rotters Club in particular. Better By Far from 77 by CARAVAN is nice [ despite the fact that Reviewers here have not been kind to it] and Modern Masquerades by FRUUPP also fits your requirements, but not so much their earlier releases--- offered for what its worth. Enjoy.

I'll third the Bo Hanson LotR and add Music From Watership down. Another vote from me for The Snow Goose by Camel. To me Barclay James Harvest on thier Octoberon lp is proggressive light rock. Somestimes it kinda jams but overall its subtle and muted.

I find Electronic Prog like Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze to be very mellow and beautiful. I love post rock and especially GY!BE, but I find it far to emotional and powerful to 'chill' to, as it makes me feel like I want to convulse in musical ecstasy on the climaxes of their songs. For the Klaus Schulse, try Timewind, though. It's beautiful

Yay, someone finally mentioned Gryphon(although I was thinking "raindances"). I don't know "midnight mushrumps" though so I'll add it to my list. ;)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Camel's "harbour of tears" cd. I find snowgoose and even dust and dreams to be too uplifting although admittedly they both have mellow moments and are both great albums(both in at least my top twenty of all time too :)) .

A big thank you to all of those who recommended albums. Quite honestly I'm not sure where some of you were coming from with some of these recommendations but the rest of you can pat yourselves on the back. O.K. All of you can pat yourselves on the back. At least you made the effort right?  Now someone go mention Celeste's "principe di un giorno" album for the third time.

It was mentioned before, but Harmonium's album "Si on avait besoin d'une cinqueme saison" is one of the best mellow prog-folk albums ever.

by the way, which of the mellow prog albums (mentioned or not) is anything similar to Harmonium's 5th season I want more similar to that!

You should try Ere G's Au-delŕ des Ombres. It's not as good (obviously), but it's pretty similar to Harmonium.
