I have Enigmatic Oceans, Imaginary Voyage, and King Kong. All of these albums are simply brilliant and go to show he's one of the best violinists in rock and jazz.

And you could always listen to Mystical Adventures and Civilized evil if you
want to hear Randy from American Idol play some really good bass.

As already mentioned, a great early Pony album is King Kong on which he
plays the music of Frank Zappa with FZ and numerous Mothers alumni. I
had the good fortune to catch Ponty with the Mothers and with
Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early 70s. He was an illustrious sideman
before striking out as a soloist.

I love Jean-Luc Ponty - particularly Aurora. I can't find that album on CD. Do you if it's available as a CD?

Randy "The Emperor" Jackson was one of the best bass players in Rock and Jazz. he was a Journey member and played with the best of the best like
- Jean Luc Ponty
- Billy Cobham
- Aretha Franklin
- The Boss Springsteen
- Elton John
- Bob Dylan
- Eddie Money
- Carlos Santana
- Zucchero
- Kenny G
- Todd Rundgren
- Joe Cocker
- Herbie Hancock
But then one day he had an emergency surgery (Gastric bypass due to his overwight), so he started to play with more cool artists to get enough bucks like N?Sync or Madonna and at last he found a stable job in American Idol.
What a waste of talent, because the guy is outstanding.

I know. He's a great bass player. I love the work that he does on both the
Ponty albums he appears on. I think he only appeared on those two right?
(Mystical Adventures and Civilized Evil.)

Almost Fragile, Randy played in three Ponty albums, he replaced Ralphie Armstrong after Jean Luc Ponty Live (73),and he played in:
- Civilized Evil (1980)
- Mystical Adventures (1981)
- Individual Choice (1983)
Randy left Jean Luc and soon joined Journey and if I'm not wrong Ponty used Synth Bass in Open Mind because he didn't found a bassist as Randy or his predecesesor Ralphie Armstrong.
Ponty didn't used a bass player in his albums until 1987's release "The Gift of Time" where Baron Browne played, who also has an amazing discography, but not in the level of "The Emperor".

i just relistened last week to a compilation I had made on cassette, and it was the fi!rst time in 10 years. What a joy it was
Quite fine music, but once you got two albums, I tend to think you have them all: this goes especially for those second part of the 70's album (I have not heard the earlier albums and I must say I tend to shun the latter albums (80's and beyond) - do not know whether this last part ofhis discography is worth it if you have Enigmatic Ocean or my favourite Upon The Wings Of music

Me too, the "Renaissance" piece makes me almost cry.
Unfortunatly, the CD seems not to be released anymore and only available on second hand at high price.

I discovered JL Ponty in the late Seventies and was stunned by his dynamic, jazzrock inspired sound, loaded with his outstanding violinplay. And he used to invite very crafty musicians on his albums like Daryl Stuermer who later joined Genesis on tour (after Allan Holdsworth had refused).
Highly recommended: his DVD entitled Jean Luc Ponty In Concert, recorded 1999 in Poland !

I like more Jerry Goodman (ex Flock) and his performances in Mahavishnu orchestra than Ponty's.
I have also Live at Donte's of Luc and it's OK, but nothing more.

Cosmic Messenger does the trick for me. Four star album. Hey, I think an ex-Tull drummer played on Civilized Evil too.

It's not the same playing style IMO. Ponty is more melodic and fluent, while Goodman is more energic and strident.

Mystical Adventures is fantastic and very progressive. Should be in every prog. collection. The only other album I've heard is Enigmatic Ocean, but that seems a bit weak and dated sounding.
Good topic and good to remember Mr. Ponty!

You can`t go wrong with the seventies stuff. He had a lot of great
young musicians playing on those albums as well as touring with him.
Saw him many times live. Saw him with Larry Coryell dropping in to jam
at Theatre St.Denis in the early 80`s.

As friend of mine is a huge fan of Jean-Luc Ponty, and I had very good chance to listen to probably all albums Ponty ever released - too many of them to list here or to simply remember.
Here is what I liked most and consequently bought for myself:
Aurora
King Kong
Imaginary Voyage
Enigmatic Ocean
Cosmic Messenger
Mystical Adventures
and
The Rite of Strings by Stanley Clarke/Al Di Meola/Jean-Luc Ponty
IMO above albums are representing BEST of Great Jean-Luc Ponty.
