Any other Velvet Underground fans here? Which one of the first four studio albums do you prefer? Each very significant and very different from one another.

I'm a big fan ... I love the first, third and even the fourth ... but the second album White Light/White Heat is one that still doesn't sit too well with me ...
Ultimately, the "obvious" debut is my favourite

Meh... never been much of an Underground fan. I guess it's because I'm a Zappa fan (and Zappa was a sworn enemy of Lou Reed).
And furthermore, I've never found their music to be entirely interesting.

I went for White Light mostly because of John Cale's The Present (or is it the gift  )

Im not thire bigest fan only got 1 album and that is ofcourse The Velvet Underground & Nico, not planing to buy another one. Half of the songs on the album are very good the other half very boring, I think that sums em up preety well they are an incredible boring group no energy or fire yust boring colorles songs. Well meby thats the point, and yeah theyr incredible overrated by all the critics

I heard the VU on the radio the other day. It was the first time I have ever heard them on commercial radio. This band birthed a movement of underground rock and was influential on the likes of Eno, Bowie, Talking Heads and U2 among many others. I don't think they can be overrated. Reed's Berlin album was also incredibly influential. Genesis toured supporting Reed in '73 and you can hear the influence of Berlin on Selling England.

I just read it; hadnt seen it before. Very good post BTW. Yeah, I agree the Velvets are often written off as the original punk band or precursor to the industrial noise stlye, although they display many styles and influences in their music. Actually one of my personal favorites is the self-titled 3rd album which is very mellow and laid back in stark contrast to the chaos and experimentation of WL/WH. "Loaded" is probably the weakest of the four, yet still very influential in its own right. Too often dismissed by the art rock and prog crowd, embraced by avid and knowledgable alternative and punk rockers; the Velvets are worth a second listen to anyone interested.
