Quoting Eugene:
Stykhia - prog-metal Kostarev Group - very nice band,I heard a lot about them, but never heard their music ![]() Vermicelli orchestra - why prog?Because of flute or accordion? Not prog, just folk/jazzy stuff Romislukus - ? Disen Gage - highly recommended 80s Crimso-influenced prog Metropolis - yes, they DO like Dream Theater... ![]() Uncrossed - techno-death-metal.I like Opeth more ![]() Agarta - prog-metal One very important band, which is missed from the list, is "Arsenal" with their famoust leader Mr. Alexei Kozlov, playing sax. Prominent jazz rock / fusion band - highly recommended. ![]() Also there's a band EXTROVERT from Russia(prog-metall).Their bassist made few posts here.Just search the forum for Russian Prog (or Extrovert) BTW,I'm a musician myself. That'll be the day when I'd be added on Archives too ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It's worth mentionning group called "Tsargrad". I have one album by them, realeased in 1994 on occasion of 120th birthday of M. Mussorgskiy, and it's called "Pictures at an Exhibition. Interpretation by Tsargrad group" This is absolutely great piece of Art, despite the fact this theme was played and interpreted by so many musicians already. Highly recommended! |

Between early 2003 and 2005 Dutch Background Magazine has published a very extensive article about the Prog In Russia, with the help from Maxim Pshenichny (Rainy Season) and Boris Bardash (Rainy Season/Ole Lukkoye). It was orignally written by Boris Grebenshchikov and translated into English by David McConnell from Scotland. If you are interested, visit www.backgroundmagazine.nl

Well, I am 100% sure they are at least Art Rock. I could also debate on what is more progressive: to pioneer your own style outside of the borders of things considered progressive or to "be influenced by ELP and Dream Theater". I always compared Треугольник with Pink Floyd's The Wall. It really is a "Russian wall", if you look at it musically. Now, although I'm not a huge fan of their latest, Piknik is a must for inclusion on the site. I plan to submit their information when I have more free time(read: holidays). -- Ivan Edited by ivansfr0st |

Don't you worry, feel free to submit whatever you like. We have Beatles, ELO and plenty of other bands (leave alone the whole bunch of power metal stuff), which IMO have nothing to do with prog, all included here. It does not matter really. IMO neither Aquarium nor Piknik are remotely prog, but it is only my opinion, and, mind you, I am not inviting you to debate what is or is not prog, as these discussions do not make much sense either.

![]() ![]() How could I forget! - SERGEY KURYOHIN!!! ![]() POP-MECHANIK's leader,experimental composer,the main prog-component(IMHO) in early Akvarium's music...his music for "Господин оформитель"(1988), a Soviet art-house movie is stunning...he died more than 10 years ago ![]() |

David Tuhmanov's album, 1975 - Sailing The Seas Of My Memory (so it can be translated) should also be mentioned here. It is a superb prog album indeed. Lyrics are mostly verses by classical poets. |

Have anyone heard about Alfred Schnitke??? He is aclaimed Soviet Russian composer, member of infamous Union of Composers of the USSR. I, personally, despite of being very negative towards many aspects of Soviet culture and style of living, and society in general, adore his musical compositions. Extremely complex and dark - his compositions are pure music for the mind. When I first came across Universe Zero, the striking similarity between their works and ones by Schnitke amazed me most. To me it is very weird that representatives of such different cultural backgrounds were composing and performing quite similar kind of music, and about in the same time - in the 80's.

Another exceptional band - APRELSKY MARSH(The March of April; I mean "march" - not the month, but an action). They have released only few albums in 80s ,which were never released on CD(as far as I know).Their style was described as "Crimso meets Depeche Mode"...dunno what it means exactly
![]() ![]() Another one new great band(going to listen to them soon) - Genesis-inspired(ah,I like these words ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Prog-jester |
