A Ukrainian citizen creates "Russian bands" poll on Canadian site...wow!How to call it?

Well, that's not "which is best"-poll.I allowed muiltiple votes (please do not use them just to make a winner from any band) to know, what bands have you experienced, guys.

I have Pesniary's "Gusliar",which is awesome,Horizont's both CDs,Nyl's album - one of my fav neo-prog CDs,highly recommended! But my most fav band is Avtograf. Also I'm going to purchase some Azazello and Little Tragedies.I DISLIKE Mechanical Poet's music,it is simple power metal, but not prog.

Hello Prog-jester.

I only know Little Tragedies (great blend of bombast mid-ELP keyboards and Russian folk, the vocals are outstanding) and Roz Vitalis (way too complex for me).

Hi Prog-Jester, Good thread and good opportunity to get acquainted with unfamiliar bands.

Are these bands listed here on PA, and what is their general sound (besides what you already mentioned)?

I would not make separation between Russia/Belarus/Ukraine when concerning any form of art. Especially music, especially prog. All these three contries are of the same cultural origines in a first place, and long dark decades of communist regime just made everything possible to destroy any form of art uncontrolled by governement and political structures. Mainly due to politics and "Iron Curtain" situation we know precious little about prog music in these countries, and choice is quite limited.

Big thank you to prog-jester for starting this thread, as it might be quite hgelpful to get to know more about progressive music on post-sovietic territories.

Avtograf - very good band playing classic art-rock, with obvious influences of Yes and Genesis

Azazello - prog-metal, technical and quite complex, would be very interesting band, but I just cannot stand their vocals. Everytime guy starts singing, I feel the urge to turn player off.

Combo - never heard about them

Decadence - heard only one track - absolutely wonderful symphonic prog; I am trying to find their album(s) for more than an year now but in vain....

Ego Eimi - never heard

Horizont - sheer brilliance, they play complex mixture of RIO and symphonic prog. I had one of two their albums on vinyl in eighties, it's got worn out due to non-stop listenings and now I just can't find it on CDs

Little Tragedies - heard only one track, which is quite good sympho, with lyrics by great Russian poet Nikolay Gumilev. MALS records are going to release three albums (including one double album) on CD, so in a couple of months time I shall be able to tell you more about them.

Masquerade - never heard

Mechanical Poet - metal - not to my likings whatsoever

NYL - quite nice Neo, but left me unimpressed

Pesniary - famous (this is only one really famous, well know band, on this list) folk group. They were doing quite well during Soviet Union times, and, franky, their music is great. Recommended to any lover of progressive folk.

Rainy season - never heard

Ros Vitalis & Tumulus - I have some mp3 of them but never really had a time to listen to it properly

++++

Apart from above there are following progressive bands, but I cannot tell you much about them either:

Stykhia

Kostarev Group

Vermicelli orchestra

Romislukus

Disen Gage

Metropolis

Uncrossed

Agarta

+++++++++++

One very important band, which is missed from the list, is "Arsenal" with their famoust leader Mr. Alexei Kozlov, playing sax. Prominent jazz rock / fusion band - highly recommended.

Although not listed on this website(I may have to do something about it in the future though), I highly recommend Akvarium and Piknik, formed in early 80's and still active. Those are the two Russian groups that I listen to the most.

Every time there is poll allowing multiple votes, there will be one idiot voting non-stop for something he even had not heard of. Such is a nature of idiots, I guess.

None of above bands has anything to do with prog.

I like Aquarium though, but mainly due to poetry of Mr. Grebenschikov.

Don't forget ARSENAL - first Russian jazz rock band, led, from 1973 till now, by legendary sax player and composer Alexey Kozlov.

During their long career ARSENAL played music in many styles: fusion, rock, progressive rock, oriental music, traditional jazz, interpretations of Russian classic music, the list is endless.

Extra class musicians, probably the most important Russian prog band.

Are you sure that none of the bands listed above are prog???

I disagree:

  1. HORIZONT's "Summer In Town" is a wonderful example of symphonic prog а la ELP with classical influences.
  2. LITTLE TRAGEDIES's "Return" contains fantastic prog music, influenced by ELP, TRACE and THE ENID.
  3. RAINY SEASON's "Return" has space-rock and electronic prog influences (PINK FLOYD and TANGERINE DREAM above all).
  4. AZAZELLO and DECADENCE play an original prog metal in the same vein as DREAM THEATER.
  5. EGO EIMI is the one-band performed by multinstrumental Alexander Skorobogatov. His style reminds to DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, PINK FLOYD and DREAM THEATER.

He meant that as for Aquarium and Piknik.BTW,they're both great...they both should be in Prog-Related genre.I'm not a huge fan of Aquarium(I prefer music over poetry...too pretentious poetry, too ordinary music. But they were good in 80s,kinda "russian Crimson"),I prefer PIKNIK much more!Serach the web for PIKNIK's site and you'll find the samples of their music there.IT IS UNIQUE!!!Edmund Shklyarsky's vocal is UNIQUE: NO COMPARINGS ALLOWED!!! And the music is close to dark/gothic rock with elemets of Crimso's music.A Musthave(especially their early works)!!!Just search for them and you won't regret!!!I must add them on Archives!!!

Metropolis - yes, they DO like Dream Theater...

Uncrossed - techno-death-metal.I like Opeth more

Agarta - prog-metal

One very important band, which is missed from the list, is "Arsenal" with their famoust leader Mr. Alexei Kozlov, playing sax. Prominent jazz rock / fusion band - highly recommended.

It's worth mentionning group called "Tsargrad".

I have one album by them, realeased in 1994 on occasion of 120th birthday of M. Mussorgskiy, and it's called "Pictures at an Exhibition. Interpretation by Tsargrad group"

This is absolutely great piece of Art, despite the fact this theme was played and interpreted by so many musicians already.

Highly recommended!

Between early 2003 and 2005 Dutch Background Magazine has published a very extensive article about the Prog In Russia, with the help from Maxim Pshenichny (Rainy Season) and Boris Bardash (Rainy Season/Ole Lukkoye). It was orignally written by Boris Grebenshchikov and translated into English by David McConnell from Scotland. Well, I am 100% sure they are at least Art Rock. I could also debate on what is more progressive: to pioneer your own style outside of the borders of things considered progressive or to "be influenced by ELP and Dream Theater".

I always compared Треугольник with Pink Floyd's The Wall. It really is a "Russian wall", if you look at it musically. Now, although I'm not a huge fan of their latest, Piknik is a must for inclusion on the site. I plan to submit their information when I have more free time(read: holidays).

Don't you worry, feel free to submit whatever you like. We have Beatles, ELO and plenty of other bands (leave alone the whole bunch of power metal stuff), which IMO have nothing to do with prog, all included here. It does not matter really. IMO neither Aquarium nor Piknik are remotely prog, but it is only my opinion, and, mind you, I am not inviting you to debate what is or is not prog, as these discussions do not make much sense either.

Erik, thanks for the link on the article Grebenschikov is AKVARIUM's leader

How could I forget! - SERGEY KURYOHIN!!!

POP-MECHANIK's leader,experimental composer,the main prog-component(IMHO) in early Akvarium's music...his music for "Господин оформитель"(1988), a Soviet art-house movie is stunning...he died more than 10 years ago
RIP...

It is a superb prog album indeed. Lyrics are mostly verses by classical poets.

Have anyone heard about Alfred Schnitke???

He is aclaimed Soviet Russian composer, member of infamous Union of Composers of the USSR.

I, personally, despite of being very negative towards many aspects of Soviet culture and style of living, and society in general, adore his musical compositions. Extremely complex and dark - his compositions are pure music for the mind.

When I first came across Universe Zero, the striking similarity between their works and ones by Schnitke amazed me most.

To me it is very weird that representatives of such different cultural backgrounds were composing and performing quite similar kind of music, and about in the same time - in the 80's.

Another exceptional band - APRELSKY MARSH(The March of April; I mean "march" - not the month, but an action). They have released only few albums in 80s ,which were never released on CD(as far as I know).Their style was described as "Crimso meets Depeche Mode"...dunno what it means exactly - I haven't listened to them

Another one new great band(going to listen to them soon) - Genesis-inspired(ah,I like these words ! ) AEOLIAN HARP from Moscow ( free mp3 on http://www.realmusic.ru/harp )
