I've only acquired Lizard recently, (with the help of a canine friend of mine) and I've only listened to it once so I can't rate it yet but I did enjoy it.  In the Wake of Poseidon is great, not nearly King Crimson's best but that's still better than most things I've heard.

I don't think so. Both of them are really good

Well I do too. I'd shake your hand but we're probably in two different countries!!

'Pictures of a City' is excellent, so what if it's similar to "21st Century...." almost all of the early Beatles songs are the same but they're all great!!!

They don't!

Yeah I don't think they do either.

But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises

"Lizard" is by far my favourite album of King Crimson, especially the title track and "Happy Family". Much better than "In the Court of the Crimson King". I agree "In the Wake of Poseidon" is more or less a copy of the predecessor, but I very much love "Cat Food", the music as well as the lyrics. Great track to dance to! The wild piano of Keith Tippet is extraordinary.

People like to trash IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON because of its similarities to IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING.  I think most of this criticism comes from those who consider the debut to be the pinnacle of King Crimson's recording output, therefore seeing POSEIDON as a sort of lesser follow up.  Even so, there is nothing on the debut that sounds remotely like "Cat Food," "Devil's Triangle" or those "Peace" refrains.  Taken together, that's half the running time, so they're not really as similar as most people make them out to be.

LIZARD is a great album, but it suffers critical lashings (as does ISLANDS) because it falls between two distinct periods... the early Lake period and the Wetton period that would follow.  It's sort of a one-off in that respect, and even admirers of the album (such as myself) have to admit that the vocals are quite eccentric and can easily put off many listeners.

Personally I love both albums, particularly LIZARD.

Both great albums, even if they did stick to the succesful formula of the
first album on Poseiden. Lizard is an absolutely unique album, there's
nothing like it, it's too bad nobody explored these paths further...Sinfield
was at his most surreal and Felliniesque in the lyrics. Islands gets more
abuse here critically, but I think it's also a rare jewel, totally different than
Lizards. I think it's just too mellow and introspective for the prog-heads
addicted to relentless riffing and showing off. Both Islands and Lizards have
about the most extreme and effective dynamic contrasts of any albums ever
(Lark's Tongue as well).

Wake is a really good album, especially the title track.  Haven't heard Lizards though.

I'd probably give Wake a 4.

I haven't yet heard In The Wake Of Poseidon, but it might be *the* example of progressive rock; it tries to be in the same vain as their first album, but better which would be quite a progression. I haven't heard it though.
My music!

You could listen to ITWOP with the notion in mind that it is the twin brother of ITCOTCK and then it can diminish your pleasure from the album. Or you can listen to it without bearing that in mind and then (like me) enjoy it very much (and I like Cat Food as well, I like it when KC goes a bit weird and crazy). I have always loved Lizard very much (and I love Happy Family as well, the sound of this song is great), and the title track especially. IMHO, very good albums. I prefer Lizard to ITWOP but this is really not important. (I also like Islands  - now this is a more hated album than these two).

I don´t have either of these yet, but a while back somebody on an another forum suggested me to get Lizard after he discovered that I'm into the Canterbury scene. He thought Lizard had a bit of that feel to it musically. Shame on me as I still haven´t gotten around to getting it but I plan to, definitely!

The title track on Lizard I was expecting to be sloppy and uninteresting, But I really enjoyed  it! It was tighter than I expected, I thought it was excellent.

Crimson fans out there. I would really like to know what you think about those albums..

In The Wake is my favourite album till Larks'...Lizard is a growing-up...listened to it just yesterday...nothing TOO good...but not bad either...

I was suprised by Lizard. I was expecting something crappy after finding out that Lake wasnt singing on the album, but haskell's vocals fit perfectly. And the Jon Anderson guest vocals in the begining of Lizard were a perfect touch. It was this album that introduced me to Yes.

Islands was another step up as well (in my mind anyways) I really like the second half of the album.

The title track of Lizard is one my favorite KC songs and it's extremely unique or can anyone tell me a song sounding similar?
Cirkus is another great song, don't really care about the rest of the album though.

ITWOP is the weakest KC album I know so far, but it's still not bad. Probably 3,5 stars

Nothing compares to their debut though

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I like Wake more than Court.  Despite the similarities, I find that Wake takes the formula from Court and stretches it abit, such as things like the Devil's Triangle, and each of the Peace themes.  The Giles on set (1st name escapes me) really plays his heart out, kinda like a final blowout performance before leaving.  And the guitar solo in Cat Food is probably one of my favorite things Fripp's done!
