From the "outside" looking in, the best (most talented, favorite) mainstream
rock band? In two categories:

Pre-1990
Post-1990
Yes yes yes, there it was. Youth must go, ah yes. But youth is only being in a way like it might be an animal. O my brothers...

For both dates:

Mission of Burma

Roger Miller maximum Electric Piano

They nibble at the edges of prog.

Be seeing you...

I find Pearl Jam to be an extremely respectable non-prog band. They view
their music as art and take a long time creating their form of "non-
commercial" music. Regardless to whether their songs are played on the
radio they will not market themselves on TV or make music videos available
on MTV or VH1. I find this very respectable from their part because they
could have many "hit" songs off MTV and would make a lot more money if
they did. Their music is also interesting to me as they do experiment a lot
on their later albums (which is why they are a lot less popular now.) Most
people don't even think Pearl Jam exist anymore because they don't market
their albums.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

I really think Zeppelin.

Even though they weren't a progressive rock band, I still think think they "progressed" rock. They added folk and middle eastern influences with blues and rock to make some extremely great music.

Led Zeppelin and The Who are the first to pop into my mind, but I'm sure there's more.

Well, my favorite non-prog, ore-90s group is The Smiths. They were great songwriters and I loved their music, but they aren't necessarily the "most respectable." I may have to give that term to Zeppelin.

Post-90s...I could mention quite a few. There are a lot of creative, talented bands that aren't prog, or at least not 100% prog. The Indie Rock scene bears quite a few artists that are very creative, unique, etc. and display some progressive elements, but haven't quite crossed the line into prog. i.e. The Decemberists and The Dismemberment Plan. Other great bands/artists include: Andrew Brid, Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Circa Survive, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, The Get Up Kids, Minus the Bear, Modest Mouse, Queens of the Stone Age, RX Bandits, Thrice, and Zombi. Now that I'm looking at this, there are a couple of bands that I would even consdier mentioning for inclusion here.

I forgot! How could I? Pat Metheny would get my vote for "most respectable" both pre and post-90s.

One band that springs to my mind almost immeadiately is Soundgarden.

As for pre-1990, I'd have to say Led Zeppelin.

Pre 90s

The Doors, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, U2, The Beatles (specially in their latter works), Depeche Mode , etc

Post-90

The Cramberries, R.E.M (although they began in the 80s), Oasis, Nirvana, Coldplay (specially at the beginning), The Corrs (this is a personal favourite), etc

Probably there are more, but these are the ones that come into my mind now
