From the "outside" looking in, the best (most talented, favorite) mainstream
rock band? In two categories:
Pre-1990
Post-1990
------------- Yes yes yes, there it was. Youth must go, ah yes. But youth is only being in a way like it might be an animal. O my brothers...

I find Pearl Jam to be an extremely respectable non-prog band. They view
their music as art and take a long time creating their form of "non-
commercial" music. Regardless to whether their songs are played on the
radio they will not market themselves on TV or make music videos available
on MTV or VH1. I find this very respectable from their part because they
could have many "hit" songs off MTV and would make a lot more money if
they did. Their music is also interesting to me as they do experiment a lot
on their later albums (which is why they are a lot less popular now.) Most
people don't even think Pearl Jam exist anymore because they don't market
their albums.

I really think Zeppelin.
Even though they weren't a progressive rock band, I still think think they "progressed" rock. They added folk and middle eastern influences with blues and rock to make some extremely great music.

Well, my favorite non-prog, ore-90s group is The Smiths. They were great songwriters and I loved their music, but they aren't necessarily the "most respectable." I may have to give that term to Zeppelin.
Post-90s...I could mention quite a few. There are a lot of creative, talented bands that aren't prog, or at least not 100% prog. The Indie Rock scene bears quite a few artists that are very creative, unique, etc. and display some progressive elements, but haven't quite crossed the line into prog. i.e. The Decemberists and The Dismemberment Plan. Other great bands/artists include: Andrew Brid, Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Circa Survive, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, The Get Up Kids, Minus the Bear, Modest Mouse, Queens of the Stone Age, RX Bandits, Thrice, and Zombi. Now that I'm looking at this, there are a couple of bands that I would even consdier mentioning for inclusion here.

Pre 90s
The Doors, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, U2, The Beatles (specially in their latter works), Depeche Mode , etc
Post-90
The Cramberries, R.E.M (although they began in the 80s), Oasis, Nirvana, Coldplay (specially at the beginning), The Corrs (this is a personal favourite), etc
Probably there are more, but these are the ones that come into my mind now

Thinking hard here, trying to avoid the obvious ones, eg: Zeppelin.
Ok, pre 1990 - Prefab Sprout. Excellent songwriting from Paddy Macaloon, lovely harmonies, and interesting lyrics.
1990 onwards - Starsailor. Haven't heard their third album yet, but the first two are excellent. Wonderful vocals and atmospheres.

Ween and Radiohead are probably the most talented bands in existence right now whatever genre.
Broken up, I'd have to list the Smiths, the Pixies, the Beatles, the Doors, Nirvana, (though I hate listening to them, they sound like honest blokes but their songwriting is awful) and that's aboout it.

Post '90: That's a much more difficult one. I suppose some of Oasis' albums are not that bad if you take the hipe out of it. The Santana album "Supernatural" is great. Also some Metallica stuff isn't bad (except ofcourse St. Anger which is ). For the rest I suppose anything worthwile is in the prog catagory.

I never thought about this before, but PINK FLOYD sounds like Maddona mixed with Some Kenny G, plus a lot of Hip Hop influences, a little Gwen Stefani, some Rammstein, a bit of Paco de Lucia and another bit of Bill Clinton's sax sound. |

I would like to tip my hat to Jeff Buckley (rest his soul) One of the most beautiful mail vocalists (in body and voice). It's truely a shame when a mocking bird dies young.
I know some people might laugh at me, but I have to give credit to Pearl Jam, I've been a Long time Fan, My favourite of their Albums has definately got to be Vitalogy. Some of you might have heard of them, but one of my favorite non-prog bands right now is "Ours" I really don't know their popularity status. All I know is they have come to my home-town of Mt.pleasant to play at Central Michigan University Rose Arena once. Sadly, I was out of town... I know they had something to do with a Song that was wrote for Spider-Man 2. Like I said, I really don't know how far their fanbase stretches. ANYONE?! heard of'em? Oh yeah! THE DOORS! Gotta love the doors. Other mentions go to bands such as, Sun Kil Moon, Spirit, Nada Surf, the Sparks, the Arcade Fire, Beck, Modest Mouse, Sigur Ros, etc... too many to name. YAY!

I've always adored The Move. Check out the prog leanings on "Shazaam" in Cherry Blossom Clinic and Fields of People.
And, of course, The Who. "Sell Out" may be one of the most entertaining albums ever produced.

There's a non-prog act I really admire. Mary-Chapin Carpenter is classified as country singer, but she's so much more. She mixes country, rock, blues and jazz to form a cohesive whole. Besides, how many "country singers" do you know of that write, play and produce their own stuff, not to mention being to get BRanford Marsalis to guest on their record?

If you've ever heard the Move you know they are nowhere near being Prog. I just said a few of their songs have prog leanings for no particular reason. I might add that I love Randy Newman, too.
