I'm not saying that Rush's first album qualifies as prog. Rather, I said that the band wasn't a progressive rock band at that time. Now, I agree that both Geddy and Lifeson were fans of Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton (The Yardbirds and The Who were some of the bands that inspired them too), but definitely Cream was a band that influenced on them. Alex Lifeson was influenced by Jimmy Page either. Rush's first album sounds pretty much like one of Zeppelin's. Moreover, on tracks like Can't Fight It and Not Fade Away, which are not on any album, although were recorded before the first one, Alex Lifeson sounds just like Page, including the guitar solo on both tracks. Its a replica of Jimmy Page's solos. Edited by Don Quito |

So...if a band plays a "long song" they are automatically prog? |

Sure LZ influenced prog ... then again, prog influenced LZ. Just listen to
tracks like Kashmir or Nobody's Fault But Mine. |

IMO Led Zeppelin were influenced by prog, but prog wasn't influenced by Led Zeppelin.
And please don't compare the mighty Zep to Green Day. Jimmy Page wil put a curse on you....... |

In our time, a commercial and ultra-sponsored band identified as THE MARS VOLTA, are doing some kind of music-computer mélange with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant pieces of music. If the community accepts them as “prog” band: Is it possible to call that “influence”?

Double-feeding, but LZ was more influenced by prog, than prog by them IMHO.

Led Zep has been slightly inspired by the prog mood of the time, but not the reverse, IMO.

I think they did especially with some of tehir more fantasy based songs. Yet I still say the founders of prog/psycediallia are the Beatles during the Sgt Pepper-Magical mystery tour era

No, the sound of Led Zeppelin has nothing to do with jazz fusion or Classical. Progressive bands ifluenced from Europian Classical Composers.

can i point out that The Mars Volta, though a "modern" prog band, can be seen to have huge Zeppelin influences. A lot of people cite The Mras Volta as the new Zeppelin, though I know fans of Zeppelin that aren't fans of TMV (the progtologist...) will disagree. just a point.

Cream was among the first to begin the long psycadellic jams (before Zep.) Is Cream prog? Or how about the Grateful Dead? I'm sarcastically speaking, while long jams are great altercations of studio tracks it doesn't mean a band is prog. |
