So it seems I get the first vote. I think that Led Zepp is one of those bands that has influence bands from all sorts of styles. From prog to pop they will always be influential in my book.

I tend to think they were more inspired by, than inspiration to.
I understand they were on very friendly terms with Yes, and probably up
on what was going on with the progressive scene.

I'm sure our masters of prog metal will correct me if I'm wrong, but Rush's primary PROG influences were Yes, and Uriah Heep from what I've read, and Dream Theater's are Rush, Yes, and..... Marillion (didn't believe that when I first heard that) |

I do agree with micky. Rush's prog influences come from Yes, and other major progressive rock bands from that era. But, I would definitely say that besides bands such as The Yardbirds, and The Who, to mention a few, Led Zeppelin influenced Rush on their first self titled album ... Still, Rush were not prog at that time. |

was it Zeppelin ..... or was it Cream. I think we all know that both Lifeson and Geddy were fanatic fans of both Clapton and Jack Bruce, but agree... that first album HARDLY qualifies as prog hahahahahha. |

Led Zeppelin has nothing to do with prog, they were not influenced by or an influence to prog. Led Zeppelin is not prog. Led Zeppelin took the role in the 60s/70s that Green Day and Fall Out Boy have today. |

well, I think it was the other way around. If you llok at their catalog, it grows staedily more and more progressive as the years go by.

NO They influenced hard rock and heavy metal WAY more than they influenced progressive rock. |

to me, there is no way i can believe that Led Zeppelin was not innfluential to prog in any way like some say. I think they were definately familiar with the scene and were torn between creating the rock they loved and the blues they loved. Still I think Zeppelin was an amazing band, possibly my favorite of all time, and I respect them greatly whether or not they were "prog" or prog-influencers

Obviously a lot of the classic 70s prog bands were so intent on what they were doing that they didn't allow any new inspiration to soak in. Why do you think Gabriel left? Why do you think Yes, Genesis and ELP ran out of gas in the late 70s? I don't think Zep had much influence on existing prog bands, but the bands that grew up listening to them is a whole other story. |

I hope this is a joke. I don't think Zeppelin influenced much of prog but they have a huge influenced on almost all types of hard rock and metal. |

Definitely, Yes they did.
Their music is based on Rock & Roll and Blues, but songs like “Stairway To Heaven”, “No Quarter”, “In My Time Of Dying”, “Kashmir”, “In The Light” or “Achilles' Last Stand” positively are twisted to prog. Please listen TOOL’s cover of “No Quarter” and you will appreciate the connection with contemporary prog. BTW: Do not compare LED ZEPPELIN with GREEN DAY or one of these nights Bonzo will come for you... Edited by Lateralus_66 |
