Planet X - Moonbabies is the real #1. It's the best album of the past 20 years, IMO.

Dream Theater's Images and Words is a far better album and has done far more for the genre.

McAlpine plays better than JP? Derek Sherinian plays better than JR? Mr. Donati I'll give to you, but JP and JR own McAlpine's mindless w**king and Sherinian's whatever that is!

I'm going to agree with Flossy. Dream Theater's technical chops definately beat Planet X's. Petrucci has a one up on McAlpine as far as clarity goes. Rudess is an amazing musician and as good as Sherinian is, Rudess is still better. Myung well, I think he's much better and more creative than Tom Kennedy.

MacAlpine plays better than JP, absolutely! More versatile and more chops. Plus, MacAlpine's solo career is much better. Petrucci's solo album is weak! Rudess does take Sherinian, but Larue takes Myung! 3-1, Planet X. Let's not forget that Billy Sheehan, Tom Kennedy, Jimmy Johnson, and Brett Garsed have played for Planet X, and Allan Holdsworth is going to be on the next album!

McAlpine is great, but not the caliber of John Petrucci
More versatile you say? + lack of emotion
And Planet X have far weaker compositions then DT... Portnoy and Petrucci are far better at composing interesting music than Sherinian and co at metal/fusion (and as Flossy wrote, its basically bout w**king)
+Planet X have a damn unstable lineup (and when comparing BANDS DT get another point), but each time its all bout speed etc...
And btw... LTE 1 owns Moonbabies...

Ugh, I can't stand that album... that kind of thing just isn't for me.
Although, looking at your name, I guess it makes sense that you like it.
As for the best prog metal, I'm not quite sure because I'm not a really
big fan of the genre. It was the one that got me into prog, but there
aren't many prog metal bands that I've really gotten into beyond the
first ones I liked because most of the ones I've listened to have
seemed very unoriginal as of late.

Riverside is more progressive, but I gotta go with I&W for the better record.

I love Images and words its up there with Shadow Gallery`s tyranny in my opinion , but I still haven't heard , Second Life Syndrome and I am now starting to think I`m missing out so I will make it my next CD I get, For this reason I didn`t vote (as tempted as I was in voting for Images and words) but I refuse to be without honer and vote against something I haven't heard

Absolutety! He did jazz fusion with CAB, jazz fusion/prog metal with Planet X, prog metal with Ring of Fire, and neo classical metal with his solo work, Project Driver, and Mark Boals. [qoute="Ed_the_Dead"]And btw... LTE 1 owns Moonbabies... [/QUOTE] Never! Planet X are the kings of the universe! They even wrote a song about it! And it's probably a better than most songs DT ever wrote.
