Topic: prog needs a new name ... Posted: January 26 2006 at 10:54 |
There isn`t any such thing as progressive rock , its all been done before , theres nothing new under the sun. The term progressive means to move forward, to break new ground , to boldly go where no one has gone before. Prog seems to slip side ways but as far as new ground, thats a joke. What prog needs to do is reinvent itself find a new name that doesn't stress the artists to live up to false expectations.

Rap isn't rapping up
Rock n' Roll isn't rolling
Progressive isn't progressing.
I don't know, I say keep it.

I totally agree its needs to progress
seems kind of suprising coming from you seeing as you dont think alternative rock and prog should be mixed

You said it above,
but new wave is not new, nu-metal will someday be old news etc....
the architectural current Art Nouveau is not new and Art Deco for all its geometrical shapes was anything but decorative.
Forget the name and enjoy.
It has been all done before since 72, though. Maybe RIO explored until the mid-80's but that is about it.

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
But why not use Progressive when the music (however rarely) really IS, and Prog as a label to describe the general sound of the genre. i.e. Yes were once Progressive, now they're Prog.

Prog doesn't need to progress at all! It's an atitude towards music and has certain characteristics, just like any other genre.
Of course it'd be nice to see new things within the prog genre as well,
but including bands that don't have these characteristics mentioned
above just for the sake of having a progress in the genre is silly.

No. Look at BE for example. I haven't heard anything even similar to that. Sure, there are prog bands that aren't incredibly original, but still more original than most recycled mainstream garbage. Besides, originality doesn't matter too much, as long as it's appealing to me.

Progressive rock is just a label that stuck. It was initially called "progressive" because it was different from the other kinds of music at the time. True, it's not a perfect label but it seems to be the most common eventhough many people don't like it mainly because they are taking it to literally and can't understand that it's just a label to describe the approach to the music and not meant to be literal. Look at it this way. Prog will probably always be progressive compared to anything that you hear on the radio or anything that is "popular"(ie top 40).

I think it's still progressing just as any other music is.
don't forget about King Crimson, they continue to break new ground every year and they still are!
