Topic: Drama and 90125 Posted: January 22 2006 at 17:36 |
Over the past while i've been listening to these two albums and I love them both, they are excellent. I can't say which I like more, probably Drama.
I was seriously put off from these two albums as there is so much, er, Drama surrounding them. I had always loved Owner of a Lonely Heart but I never felt the need to dig up the record and give it a good listen. I'm glad I did!
All those bad reviews are SO undeserved. 90125 is not as "prog" as most Yes albums but the strength of the songs and the members of the band make that irrelevant, even the short instrumental "Cinema" is fantastic.
I urge people to open their minds and give these albums fair listens.
Does anyone feel the same way?

I've never had a problem with Drama, though it is a little odd considering the line-up. I've never liked "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and I've sampled some other stuff on that album, and I didn't like it a bit.

Drama, I find 90245 a bit too poppy, but both are very good

I do agree with you, people on this site
Are so preoccupied with hating these
Albums (other albums as well) that they
Never Really respect them as being different.

90125 is a great album. Nice to see Yes trying something new and fresh. They couldn't remake CTTE forever. Drama is also very good.
I don't hate pop by prog bands as much as most, I'm happy when these bands get the commercial due they deserved (Genesis)

one of the great things about Yes....
people talk about not doing album after album of say ... Close to the
Edge pt. 2, 3, or 4. Yes was always changing album to
album, another mark of how great a group Yes were.
After TFTO, which was much like CttE. You had Relayer, GFTO,
Tormato, Drama, and 90125. People talk about Relayer being an
abnormality in Yes's catalog, how about the change, the evolution
over the mid 70's to the mid 80's. Every one of those albums was
completely different from each other, and only GFTO was a throw back of
sorts to a previous album.
Both Drama and 90125 are great albums, taken on their own merits.
Compare them to CttE and sure they come up short, but what doesn't.

I don't like a single note of 90125, it's not even good POP, it's a hybrid and absolutely mediocre IMO.
If I want to listen good POP I buy Fleetwood Mac, if I wanto get Prog' music I buy Yes. Sounds totally artificial, it's not the music that Yes plays better, you won't ask Duran Duran to play Gates of Delirium because it will suck. I don't ask Yes to play Owner of a Lonely Heart without Steve Howe, because that's not what they do better.
On the other hand Drama is an excellent album, I don't see it like a 100% Yes album, but it's excellent, much better than Going for the One and Tormato if you ask me.

You mean 90210....sorry 90125, but cheesy TV show and cheesy album, so not a problem if I mix both numbers.
It was a stupid lapsus, sorry, already edited my post.

I do like both, although I much prefer Drama. (Although I do miss Jon) There's a few songs on 90125 that are a bit too much on the poppy side, but Cinema makes up for that!

What happened to this song we once knew so well???

Drama is excellent, 90125 is absolutely horrible as you well say but Big Generator is even worst.

I like 90125 and actually, when it first came out, it was refreshing to see Yes actually finding something to do after Tormato and Drama. I can admit I saw these tours. Drama was the last in the round and it was painful watching that Buggles guy, was it Trevor Rabin, trying to sing through the Yes catalogue. Actually, 90125 was a good tour. It was good to have Jon Anderson back.

I think they're both great albums, with Drama just coming out on top for me.
