Lets see how our musical tastes changed from when we were very young to the present.

When I was young, I mostly like Argentinian pop/rock, and Dire Straits!

My favourites:

_Dire Straits (Walk of Life was my favourite song of all times)

_Patricio Rey y Sus Redonditos de Ricota (Classic rock sounding)

_La Renga (Popular hard rock band with a lot of energy)

_Sumo (another good rock band from my country)

Now, I love progressive rock and classic rock. However, I could put Dire Straits easily in my top 20 bands... maybe even in my top 10. It is, in my opinion, easily the best band from the 80s.

How about you?

DOB 1969

Frankie Goes To Hollywood were my first favourites. I still like listening to it now 20 years later. My tastes haven't really changed much. I think I would have liked prog from the beginning but I just didn't hear any until I was 16 years old.

DOB 1989

Had a massive obsession with Michael Jackson when I was about 9...hehe...but until I was about 13 I was strictly classical (and had and still have an excellent knowledge) but then I discovered...ach...nu-metal when I heard a friend's Korn CD...that all changed about 2 years ago :) luckily it didn't last long and I had a crossover period when I was about 15 where my main musical interest was industrial and electro/EBM (which I still love)

I'm so prog, I clap in 9/8

 Thumbs Up DOB:  66

  1. Deep Purple
  2. Black Sabbath
  3. Pink Floyd
  4. Jimi Hendrix
  5. Iron Maiden
  6. Judas Priest
  7. King Crimson

These were my major bands growing up.  I guess you could say I liked a mixture of metal and prog.  I rarely listen to Maiden or Priest anymore, but still thouroughly enjoy the others.

Thank god I'm a little older than you Drew

I was born in 73' ... and earliest I can remember was growing up with a Simon & Garfunkel record (and getting really moved by The Sound Of Silence ... a very cool first favourite song!!!)

However in the late 70s, early 80s I really loved ABBA, Boney M, The Bee Gees, and offhand a few disco records ... Chic's Freak Out (I still get a thrill hearing that!), Tina Charles' Dance Little Lady and Lipps Inc' Funkytown ... at some point I "graduated to "thinking man's synth pop" like Ultravox and OMD ... before discovering classic rock at age 13

DOB 1963

Late 60s - whatever my parents played: there they were, in their mid 30's, during the greatest period of musical revolution in history (sort of) and what were they listening to? Jim Reeves, Max Bygraves and bad Country & Western..... Oy!

Early 1970's - Aha! My neighbour purchased The Best Of Uriah Heep, didn't like it & sold it to me... my journey began

Late 1970's - primarily Punk/Heavy Metal, but then my brother in law introduced me to Floyd & Early Genesis... my journey continued

1980's - primarily Heavy Metal, but then bands such as Marillion & Twelfth Night came on the scene & they pointed me back toward more of the 'classic' prog bands... my journey continued apace

1990's to present day - all of the above & soooo much more... the never ending journey continues

How long have you been coping with deafness, poor fellow? Disapprove

My first progressive experience was with "Mike Oldfield/Crises" album at the age of about 11, in the late 80's.

I made an astral travel on the long piece. Very intense experience which changed my life and made me discovered the spiritual side of music. Then, i began to discover his others albums (my first Cds BTW, as we were already in the ugly numeric era).

At the same time, i discovered "Alan Parsons Project", i had Pyramid on tape and liked it a lot.

Then PF/The Wall, Dark side and Wish...Etc...

Hey, I'm a child yet... at least I feel like a kid!

DOB Somewhere in time*

Now, seriously, when I was a kid, I heard mainly the several genres my parents liked to listen to: romantic, bolero, tango, classical and all kinds of Brazilian musical genres (pop & folk). They made 'serestas' (musical meetings) at home with relatives and friends and I enjoyed greatly those moments.

When I grew up and went by myself (I guess ), I took contact with Beatles, Stones, Who, Byrds, etc. and also was caught by the musical movement called 'tropicalismo' with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Mutantes and others. I still like Byrds and Mutantes a lot and Beatles, Stones and Who averagely.

Well, I was a teenager when I went to a music festival - it was in 1970, and I saw O Terço performing: that marvelous sound suited perfectly for me. Almost at the same time I heard Moody Blues and Pink Floyd songs and I think my musical taste changed forever. Soon, I was hearing Tull, Genesis, Crimson, EL&P, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc. just like today.

DOB...1966

I had older brothers and my tastes were greatly influenced by the oldest one of them.

It started with Deep Purple, and then I really started liking the Beatles(still do), Moody Blues, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Neil Young and especially Pink Floyd.

When my brother had left the house I explored some more and found Alan Parsons Project, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult and I REALLY started to delve in to the Pink Floyd archives. By the time I was 18 I had every Floyd lp as well as some bootlegs.

When I left high school I started to search deep for good new music. My 1st discoveries were The Violent Femmes, Marillion, Red Hot Chili Peppers and eventually moved towards the alternative sounds with Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Butthole Surfers and Janes Addiction

Eventually I became bored with over hyped and talentless acts and went retro seeking unheard music.  My 1st discoveries were old Genesis(everyone has heard the 80's crap), King Crimson, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream, Gentle Giant and ELP. Much to my shock and delight I discovered that much I had listened to was actually catagorized as Progressive Rock(and here I thought I had diverse tastes.), and that was only about 1 year prior to discovering ProgArchives.

The first LPs I bought (I was then 14 years old, now I am 48) were Room To
Move by John Mayall and Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine, a double
recopilation LP from The Doors, both of them open for me the doors of
perception. Soon after I entered the mysterious world of prog music, until
now.
This is the way the world ends
