Lets see how our musical tastes changed from when we were very young to the present.

When I was young, I mostly like Argentinian pop/rock, and Dire Straits!

My favourites:

_Dire Straits (Walk of Life was my favourite song of all times)

_Patricio Rey y Sus Redonditos de Ricota (Classic rock sounding)

_La Renga (Popular hard rock band with a lot of energy)

_Sumo (another good rock band from my country)

Now, I love progressive rock and classic rock. However, I could put Dire Straits easily in my top 20 bands... maybe even in my top 10. It is, in my opinion, easily the best band from the 80s.

How about you?

DOB 1969

Frankie Goes To Hollywood were my first favourites. I still like listening to it now 20 years later. My tastes haven't really changed much. I think I would have liked prog from the beginning but I just didn't hear any until I was 16 years old.

DOB 1989

Had a massive obsession with Michael Jackson when I was about 9...hehe...but until I was about 13 I was strictly classical (and had and still have an excellent knowledge) but then I discovered...ach...nu-metal when I heard a friend's Korn CD...that all changed about 2 years ago :) luckily it didn't last long and I had a crossover period when I was about 15 where my main musical interest was industrial and electro/EBM (which I still love)

Late 60s - whatever my parents played: there they were, in their mid 30's, during the greatest period of musical revolution in history (sort of) and what were they listening to? Jim Reeves, Max Bygraves and bad Country & Western..... Oy!

Early 1970's - Aha! My neighbour purchased The Best Of Uriah Heep, didn't like it & sold it to me... my journey began

Late 1970's - primarily Punk/Heavy Metal, but then my brother in law introduced me to Floyd & Early Genesis... my journey continued

1980's - primarily Heavy Metal, but then bands such as Marillion & Twelfth Night came on the scene & they pointed me back toward more of the 'classic' prog bands... my journey continued apace

1990's to present day - all of the above & soooo much more... the never ending journey continues

My first progressive experience was with "Mike Oldfield/Crises" album at the age of about 11, in the late 80's.

I made an astral travel on the long piece. Very intense experience which changed my life and made me discovered the spiritual side of music. Then, i began to discover his others albums (my first Cds BTW, as we were already in the ugly numeric era).

At the same time, i discovered "Alan Parsons Project", i had Pyramid on tape and liked it a lot.

Then PF/The Wall, Dark side and Wish...Etc...

Hey, I'm a child yet... at least I feel like a kid!

DOB Somewhere in time*

Now, seriously, when I was a kid, I heard mainly the several genres my parents liked to listen to: romantic, bolero, tango, classical and all kinds of Brazilian musical genres (pop & folk). They made 'serestas' (musical meetings) at home with relatives and friends and I enjoyed greatly those moments.

When I grew up and went by myself (I guess ), I took contact with Beatles, Stones, Who, Byrds, etc. and also was caught by the musical movement called 'tropicalismo' with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Mutantes and others. I still like Byrds and Mutantes a lot and Beatles, Stones and Who averagely.

Well, I was a teenager when I went to a music festival - it was in 1970, and I saw O Terço performing: that marvelous sound suited perfectly for me. Almost at the same time I heard Moody Blues and Pink Floyd songs and I think my musical taste changed forever. Soon, I was hearing Tull, Genesis, Crimson, EL&P, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc. just like today.

DOB...1966

I had older brothers and my tastes were greatly influenced by the oldest one of them.

It started with Deep Purple, and then I really started liking the Beatles(still do), Moody Blues, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Neil Young and especially Pink Floyd.

When my brother had left the house I explored some more and found Alan Parsons Project, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult and I REALLY started to delve in to the Pink Floyd archives. By the time I was 18 I had every Floyd lp as well as some bootlegs.

When I left high school I started to search deep for good new music. My 1st discoveries were The Violent Femmes, Marillion, Red Hot Chili Peppers and eventually moved towards the alternative sounds with Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Butthole Surfers and Janes Addiction

Eventually I became bored with over hyped and talentless acts and went retro seeking unheard music.  My 1st discoveries were old Genesis(everyone has heard the 80's crap), King Crimson, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream, Gentle Giant and ELP. Much to my shock and delight I discovered that much I had listened to was actually catagorized as Progressive Rock(and here I thought I had diverse tastes.), and that was only about 1 year prior to discovering ProgArchives.

Posted By: Hesselius
Date Posted: January 20 2006 at 13:13
The first LPs I bought (I was then 14 years old, now I am 48) were Room To
Move by John Mayall and Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine, a double
recopilation LP from The Doors, both of them open for me the doors of
perception. Soon after I entered the mysterious world of prog music, until
now.

Wen I was a stupid litle kid I listened... em... Vanilla Ice (wen i was 5 years old).
Also I listened Queen (still heard tem) and... Michael Jackson (not anymore) and some cumbias, gruperas and that kind of crap.(I don't know how write this 2 genres in english)

After that I listen most of rock like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Foo Figthers, Smashing Pumpkins and, in the adolecence (12 to 14 years, very stupid period) I feel atract by nu metal and some pop, hip hop and rock bands. From 15 to 17 I only listen Rock (international and mexican bands) and 60's 70's rock bands like beatles, led zeppelin, the doors, etc.

2 Years ago I discover Prog Rock and I tink im gonna listen it until the death.

DOB 1990

My tastes in music have only changed a bit. When I was around 6 I liked stuff like Live and Pearl Jam. When I was 10, Sum 41 was my favourite band, and then the others were Incubus, Creed, Nickelback, and Our Lady Peace. When I was 11, I started getting into hard rock, like System Of A Down, Nine Inch Nails and stuff, and also Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, all that stuff. I think it's actually System and music like that that helped me realize that I like unique music. But I've always loved spacey, psychedelic music like Pink Floyd, and acid stuff like the Doors.

Bands I was into before I  was 16....  Metallica, Chumbawumba, Green Day, Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Deadsy, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Static X,  Linkin Park, Nirvana, Adema, Rammstein,  Foo Fighters, Ever Clear, and I can't remember what else, but I was rabidly obsessed with Korn.

Oh well, I was a kid, and I didn't know any better.

But when I was 16, I started getting into Iron Maiden, and things started turning for the better, and I got rid of all my nu metal garbage.

KISS (yep, I was a member of the KISS Army when I was five. My first concert ever was KISS with AC/DC opening, 13 Dec. 1977, at the age of 5. I outgrew the band by the time I was about 10 hehe.)

Most of the other stuff I remember liking from my childhood was just whatever my older brother and father were listening to. The most lasting of these was Rush from my brother, and Neil Young from my dad.

What i would listen to as a kid:

Elton John
Joe Cocker
Lionel Richie
George Michael
U2
(Basically what ever my parents listened to, i did)

As a teenager:
Korn
Limp Bizkit
Metallica
Creed
The odd rap song
Blink 182
(Basically what ever my friends listened to, and the radio gave me)

Now (almost 20):
Metal (the decent stuff)
Jazz
Classical
Folk
80s pop
And, of course, Prog-Rock
Plus everything in between that takes my fancy

I still apreciate the bands i listened to as a kid, and Elton John is still one of my favourites, but the stuff i listened to as a teenager i now stay well away from. Interesting, that.

Born in '62.

Pre-teen, CCR, CSN, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Peter Paul & Mary, Mammas & the Pappas, Carpenters, Butthole Surfers, stuff like that....

In the 70's was lots of Kansas, and a major thing for Bowie.  Plus Dire Straits, Chicago, Doobies, Gap Band, Bee Gees (pre-disco), and anything Motown.

Late 70's, Fear, Bad Brains, Mother's Finest, Black Flag, X, Siouxsie/Banshees.

In the 80's I bought all the Loverboy albums and went to see them live four times.  So sue me...

I'm feeling much better now (although CSN still makes for a great evening of tunes).

I don't know, whatever my parents listened to and Disney soundtracks and the Wonderbuss tapes...well, that was when I was really young. In my preteen years, I strictly listened to classical, but early on into high school, I discovered Prog and here I am today with a new found appreciation for good music (and that doesn't only include Prog, of course).

Born in 89.

1 to 6: Guns & Roses, Metallica, AC/DC, some Green Day, Black Sabbath, a little Maiden, Ted Nugent.

7 to 12 or so: All of the above and KISS. Pure Kiss obsession. Also a little bit of Marilyn Manson. Then Deep Purple, some Skynyrd, etc. Mostly classic rock, here. Around fourth grade I discovered Gentle Giant, which led me to King Crimson and Yes. The prog journey begins!

13 - now: Slayer was the first real metal band that I got into, and then Iced Earth, and now...a lot of bands, man! Kiss are still my favorite, though. Tons of prog along the way, of course. Also dig some other stuff like Steely Dan and Elton John.

Let's see. I guess Raffi was a favorite when I was really young .

After that my parents always played Mary Black and John McCutcheon, so I got acquainted with folk type music...a little king crimson too!

Then I started finding my own music. I was born in '83 so I guess you could say that by this stage, I was becoming a product of "alternative rock." I liked Bush, Live, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, 311, Our Lady Peace, Semisonic, Blues Traveler, The Cranberries, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLaughlin and maybe some Static x, Dave Matthews, System of a Down and The Chemical Brothers as well as loads of classic rock (Allman Brothers, ACDC, Jimi Hendrix, Bad Company, Led Zeppein, Canned Heat, Joe Walsh, Van Halen, Peter Frampton, Boston) and some 80's rock too (Scorpions, Soundgarden, Dire Straits).

That's all I can really think of right now. I've really been all over the board.

considering my childhood was nearly 30 years ago hahahah.. one band stands out.

Remember being absolutely floored by the sounds of an album blaring from my parents 8-track player.

ELO - ELO 2.  Probably my first prog memory from '73 or so.

Needless to say I grew up listening to ELO and getting every album as they were released.  Of course like any child of the 70's I loved Zeppelin, Bad Company, and as the 70's progressed.... KISS . My first concert and an experience to virgin eyes hahahahh.

I've been a proghead all my life.  My first favorite band was Styx.  I remember when I was 3, I saw the video for Mr. Roboto and thought it was the coolest thing in the world.  Later on when I was 6, my aunt played for me Focus's Moving Waves album.  I fell in love with Hocus Pocus, and Moving Waves was the first cd I ever got.  It's still a favorite of mine.  Later when I was 12, I got into The Beatles and later the Moody Blues, and then I got into Led Zeppelin at 13.  When I was 14 I became a huge Pink Floyd Fan after seeing them in concert in 1994.  From there, I moved on to Yes and through them discovered King Crimson, Renaissance, Genesis, ...

you were progborn man  (I like this term, just invented it )

I'm only 16 but I've gone through a good amoount of embarrassing changes I think. At first I was into all the boring crap my dad listens to like Jackson Brown, Peter, Paul, & Mary, and Alan Jackson. Then I began my Weird Al obssession (Along with Dr. Demento) in 3rd or 4th grade. Then in 6th grade began began my rap phase. Then at the end of 8th grade there was a short Weird Al revival, until I got into RHCP and the White Stripes along classic rock, and two autumns ago I discovered prog (which will hopefully last until the end of my life).

the only songs i can remember hearing at a very young age (ie. about 5 years old) are Heaven for Everyone and Show must go on by Queen, and Alone by the Bee Gees. I don't really know why i remember these specifically.
