Hate to spoil it further... but he most definitely was a serial killer. You missed the point.

The point was (as was better illustrated in the novel than the film)
that these businessmen were so shallow and self-centered. He did
kill those people. But remember the recurring theme of everyone
not remembering eachother's name? For instance when he kills
Jared Leto's character, and later on someone says that they had eaten
lunch with Leto's character the other day, so he couldn't be
dead. Well... he was dead. He just didn't know who the hell
he was eating lunch with. These people are so inconsequential and
self-centered as that they don't remember anything that doesn't
immediately benefit them. That's why Bateman was able to kill all
those people and have everyone tell him he didn't kill anyone. No
one remembered, you see.

Anycase, great film and book. And the Genesis quote was a riot.
