Um, yes - Pink Floyd wrote that about 4 years after "Vincebus Eruptum" was released...

Close between Purple and Sabbath, but Sabbath by a little bit. And Zeppelin at a distant third.

Maybe I'm missing something...the words "prog-rock" and "Led Zeppelin" never seemed to be much of a match, IMO.  Am I missing something?

Yep - Blue Cheer were the first heavy metal band...

Although you could easily argue for The Who or The Kinks, I reckon that Blue Cheer had it sewn up - amps up to 11 and everything.

http://www.bluecheer.info/

Listen to "Feathers from Your Tree" on "Outside Inside". Spookily similar to "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath. And there's plenty more Black Sabbath soundalikes in here - 2 years before the Sabs hit the boards.

Talking of Spooky things, Spooky Tooth's incredible album "Spooky Two" has many bits that remind me of bands that were still twinkles in their founder's eyes; "Evil Woman" bears a huge resemblance to "Sweet Leaf"... and so it goes on.

Back to Blue Cheer, amidst the awful mess (because, let's face it, both BC's first two landmark masterpieces are a total mess), you'll also hear bits of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin - before either band played a note.

In summary, Blue Cheer are the most important and most horrendous band you'll ever hear as far as Metal/Hard Rock is concerned.

Enjoy

 Led's face it:

L - live band par excellance
 E - enormous talents
 D - drum god Bonham

Z - zillions of brilliant ideas
E - epic songs like Kashmir, Carouselambra, Achilles Last Stand etc.
 P - Plants vocals
 P - Pages guitar extravaganzas
E - eclectic John Paul Jones
L - leading band in history
 I - irresistible
N - never to be compared to Deep Purple and Black Sabbath

Zep -- much deeper than the others, though I like a lot of Purple.

I gave up on Sabbath in grade 7, with puberty, and discovering prog.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

I'm not so sure about MC5 - they weren't so much about the pose - they were more about the mayhem and "punk" attitude.

Metal has always been, to a large extent, about the pose (and other stuff too, of course...)
