Purp may be prog, but I highly enjoy Led Zep alot more.

By the way, my avatar has nothing to do with Led Zep, I just think the Hendinburg crashing is a good picture, very dramatic, and a bit orriginal for an avatar I think.

All excellent hard rock groups ... Zep was the first one I fell in love with ... Purple the last, Heep  the one I listen to the most nowadays

I hate to disagree with you prog...but I can't stand zep...I much prefer sabbath.  Haven't heard enough of purple to decide on them.  I love sabbath, I hate zep, and I don't know purple.  The choice is easy.

I'm shocked at how many proggers like zep...they sucked.  All their cd's blew and robert plant had that hairy man chest and slipknot ranks five stars so shove it up your minge.

Deep Purple, just a matter of personal taste, because Led Zeppelin is also a great band.

Black Sabbath is not my cup of tea, but I recognize they were a hell of a band also.

Zep easily for being one of the most creative hard rock bands.

Followed by Sab and then Purp.

My vote goes to Deep Purple. I play the piano and Mr John Lord makes the difference to me.

And DP have contibuted a lot in musical experimentation, mostly about classical tunes mixed with rock. "Highway Star" and "Burn" are soul-stirring!

And then, Mr Ian Gillan playing Jesus Christ in the movie of Jesus Christ Superstar... well, have a look at the discussion forum about Andrew Lloyd Webber in the "Bands and Albums" directory...

Ciao,

Sab.

Zep is a great band and all, but not even close to Sab, and Purple really only have a few classic albums ( ie. In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head ).

And to some of you (you know who I mean..): yeah, Ozzy is a f**king b*****d, and you're all nice guys.. NOT!

Zep, Sab, Purp. In that order.

My vote goes to sabbath by quite a wide margin.

They single handedly defined an entire genre, and they are easily the most influential band in this list.  I like both the others, but I have never been able to get into them the way I've been into sab for so many years.  I have never really been much of a Zep fan, as I never thought Page was all that great and Plant is sort of a w**ker (though bonham was an amazing drummer).  Black Sabbath was a powerhouse through and through (Ozzy years only!).

Speaking of, why is Ozzy a b*****d?  for being such a drug addled old man he really has a big heart.

Sabbath: the first three albums are just miracles!!! They created metal..... I mean just listen to the song Black Sabbath. Not even Ac/Dc had so much power coming out from just three chords. I saw them this summer. I can't belive it yet....... Real KINGS!!!

Led Zeppelin: mabye its just me but I can't find two songs which sound the same.I mean not just a bit!!! Realy f#cking creative!!!  Bonham is also one of my favourite drummers ever (RIP)..... Would love to see them live......Dont think its possible

Deep Purple: I saw them this summer too. They were just amazing!!! Had never liked them because I had mostly heard Smoke On The Water which in my opinion is awfull compared to the other INCREDIBLE pieces they have. Oh and Steve Morse is AMAZING! Didnt expect him to be so good....

So my vote goes to..................................

I think I'd better not vote

Led Zeppelin
 - They made the anthem of Rock.
 - They've got an incredible singer.
 - They've got an even more incredible guitar player (ever seen anybody else play guitar with a fiddlestick).

I bet there's more to say about them but can't recall anything right now...

Led Zeppelin, by a country mile. Whatever you may say about Ozzy, the first 4 Sabbath albums ROCK like a big rocky thing that's had some extra rocks piled on top of it. Deep Purple had their moments, but I wouldn't rescue any of their albums from a burning building (or even one with the heating turned up uncomfortably high).

Yep - Blue Cheer were the first heavy metal band...

Although you could easily argue for The Who or The Kinks, I reckon that Blue Cheer had it sewn up - amps up to 11 and everything.

http://www.bluecheer.info/ - http://www.bluecheer.info/

Listen to "Feathers from Your Tree" on "Outside Inside". Spookily similar to "Into the Void" by Black Sabbath. And there's plenty more Black Sabbath soundalikes in here - 2 years before the Sabs hit the boards.

Talking of Spooky things, Spooky Tooth's incredible album "Spooky Two" has many bits that remind me of bands that were still twinkles in their founder's eyes; "Evil Woman" bears a huge resemblance to "Sweet Leaf"... and so it goes on.

Back to Blue Cheer, amidst the awful mess (because, let's face it, both BC's first two landmark masterpieces are a total mess), you'll also hear bits of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin - before either band played a note.

In summary, Blue Cheer are the most important and most horrendous band you'll ever hear as far as Metal/Hard Rock is concerned.

Enjoy

L - live band par excellance
 E - enormous talents
 D - drum god Bonham

Z - zillions of brilliant ideas
E - epic songs like Kashmir, Carouselambra, Achilles Last Stand etc.
 P - Plants vocals
 P - Pages guitar extravaganzas
E - eclectic John Paul Jones
L - leading band in history
 I - irresistible
N - never to be compared to Deep Purple and Black Sabbath
