I sat in my seat of the Boeing 767 waiting for everyone to
hurry and stow their carry-ons and grab a seat so we could start what I
was sure to be a long, uneventful flight home.

With the huge capacity and slow moving people taking their
time to stuff luggage far too big for the overhead and never paying much
attention to
holding up the growing line behind them, I simply shook my
head knowing that this flight was not starting out very well. I was
anxious to get home to see my loved ones so I was focused on my issues and
just felt like standing up and yelling for some of these clowns to get
their act together.

I knew I couldn't say a word so I just thumbed thru the
"Sky Mall" magazine from the seat pocket in front of me.

You know it's really getting rough when you resort to the
over priced, useless sky mall crap to break the monotony.

With everyone finally seated, we just sat there with the
cabin door open and no one in any hurry to get us going although we were
well past the scheduled take off time.

No wonder the airline industry is in trouble I told
myself.

Just then, the attendant came on the intercom to inform us
all that we were being delayed.

The entire plane let out a collective groan.

She resumed speaking to say "We are holding the aircraft
for some very special people who are on their way to the plane and the
delay shouldn't be
                   more than 5 minutes.

The word came after waiting six times as long as we were
promised that I was finally going to be on my way home.

Why the hoopla over "these" folks?

I was expecting some celebrity or sport figure to be the
reason for the hold up ...

Just get their butts in a seat and let's hit the gas I
thought.

The attendant came back on the speaker to announce in a
loud and excited voice that we were being joined by several U.S. Marines
returning home from Iraq !!!

Just as they walked on board, the entire plane erupted
into applause.

The men were a bit taken by surprise by the 340 people
cheering for them as they searched for their seats.

The y were having their hands shook and touched by almost
everyone who was within an arm's distance of them as they passed down the
aisle. One elderly woman kissed the hand of one of the Marines as he
passed by her.

The applause, whistles and cheering didn't stop for a long
time.

When we were finally airborne, I was not the only civilian
checking his conscience as to the delays in "me" getting home, finding my
easy chair, a cold beverage and the remote in my hand.

The se men had done for all of us and I had been
complaining silently about "me" and "my" issues I took for granted the
everyday freedoms I enjoy and the conveniences of the American way of
life.
I took for granted that others had paid the price for my
ability to moan and complain about a few minutes delay to "me" while those
Heroes were going home to their loved ones.

I attempted to get my selfish outlook back in order and
minutes before we landed, I suggested to the attendant that she announce
over the speaker a request for everyone to remain in their seats until our
heroes were allowed to gather their things and be first off the plane.

The cheers and applause continued until the last Marine
stepped off and we all rose to go about our too often taken for granted
everyday freedoms.

                   I felt proud of them.

I felt it an honor and a privilege to be among the first
to welcome them home and say "Thank You for a job well done."

I vowed that I will never forget that flight nor the
lesson learned. I can't say it enough, THANK YOU to those Veterans and
active servicemen and women who may read this and a prayer for those who
cannot because they are no longer with us.

                   GOD BLESSAMERICA!

WELCOME HOME! AND THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!!!! This
is a ribbon for soldiers fighting in Iraq.

Mark,

You know as well as I do that this type of sentiment is not going to go over well on this site. I see this as mainly a provocative attempt to stir up trouble and frankly you should know better than to post this sort of thing. What's going on in Iraq is a f**ked-up mess and if you think about it, it's not something to really be proud of, but at best to be understood as a grim reality. These soldiers are being used as pawns in a cynical game of realpolitik, and the lives being lost are not for any ideals or for their homeland, but only for gains in a geo-political chess game.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to insult you, but I really think you need to reflect on what motivated you to post this.

I don't care how it goes over on this site. I'm going to post it anyway. If you can't handle a different point of view, then maybe you shouldn't be here.

Don't insult me with this "I support the troops but oppose the war" BS. You can't have it both ways. It's obvious you have a grudge against servicemen and what they're doing. So why don't you just go ahead and call them baby-killers and get it over with. And stop pretending you really care.

I'm curious about these stories. I see this and many
others just like it posted all over the net. They have
over the top patriotic tone, something to do with "who
the real heroes are" and end with "God Bless
America".
This story and many more like it are untrue, yet I see
them all over the net. Obviously, anyone who
disagrees with you won't change their views just by
reading these, so it's kind of like preaching to the
choir. Why is there a need to post these stories?

I hear you brother, why indeed! I think MarktheShark is a few brain cells shy of human intelligence, as are most of the others who post these naive sentiments.

Mark,

If you're posting this facetiously to try and get a rise out of the more outspoken members of the forum who don't agree with Bush's policy (which I guess is what your winking icon is suggesting), you're a pathetic fool.

But, hey, you got me to respond, so I guess you got your rocks off...

Mark,

If you're posting this facetiously to try and get a rise out of the more outspoken members of the forum who don't agree with Bush's policy (which I guess is what your winking icon is suggesting), you're a pathetic fool.

But, hey, you got me to respond, so I guess you got your rocks off...

You know, I just love it when people like you go for the name-calling and personal attacks when backed into a corner.

Nothing naive here my friend. But you seem to have a problem distinguishing the good guys from the bad guys. What's the matter, gray got your tongue?

Hey boys and girls! You know what time it is? It's reminder time! Heeere we go:

I think Mark is right the servicemen do deserve some applause  even though I am personally against the war they are risking their lives for a cause they believe is right, good for them.

On the other hand Iraq really has nothing to do with 9/11 It was that Osama bin Laden fellow who assaulted us not Sadam Hussein so why are we Iraq again?

I saw nothing pornographic about any of the images.  If the truth is offensive then we really are in trouble.

Oops.  I missed the severed head.  Not offensive, but definitely gruesome.

I'm not going to get into a debate about this. I was just about to let the suicide photos slide, when I saw the decapitated guy, what next ... the other side responds with photos to prove mark the shark's remark about "baby-killers"

Some truths can be presented in the form of offensive images.

Oh yeah, I agree that Iraq was pretty much irrevelant to the war on terror. But not completely though. I do think Bush's priorities were out of whack. But we're there now and guess who we're fighting? It's not Bath Party cronies or Saddam's thugs. It's Al Quaeda!

Oh and calling 9/11 a tragedy is shading the truth a bit don't you think?  A natural disaster is a tragedy.  This was an attack by a group of vile and evil men.  This fact must never be forgotten.  It wasn't a tragedy, it was an outrage.
