Subject: An Airline Passenger’s Story

I sat in my seat of the Boeing 767 waiting for everyone to
hurry and stow their carry-ons and grab a seat so we could start what I
was sure to be a long, uneventful flight home.
With the huge capacity and slow moving people taking their
time to stuff luggage far too big for the overhead and never paying much
attention to
holding up the growing line behind them, I simply shook my
head knowing that this flight was not starting out very well. I was
anxious to get home to see my loved ones so I was focused on my issues and
just felt like standing up and yelling for some of these clowns to get
their act together.
I knew I couldn't say a word so I just thumbed thru the
"Sky Mall" magazine from the seat pocket in front of me.
You know it's really getting rough when you resort to the
over priced, useless sky mall crap to break the monotony.
With everyone finally seated, we just sat there with the
cabin door open and no one in any hurry to get us going although we were
well past the scheduled take off time.
No wonder the airline industry is in trouble I told
myself.
Just then, the attendant came on the intercom to inform us
all that we were being delayed.
The entire plane let out a collective groan.
She resumed speaking to say "We are holding the aircraft
for some very special people who are on their way to the plane and the
delay shouldn't be
more than 5 minutes.
The word came after waiting six times as long as we were
promised that I was finally going to be on my way home.
Why the hoopla over "these" folks?
I was expecting some celebrity or sport figure to be the
reason for the hold up ...
Just get their butts in a seat and let's hit the gas I
thought.
The attendant came back on the speaker to announce in a
loud and excited voice that we were being joined by several U.S. Marines
returning home from Iraq !!!
Just as they walked on board, the entire plane erupted
into applause.
The men were a bit taken by surprise by the 340 people
cheering for them as they searched for their seats.
The y were having their hands shook and touched by almost
everyone who was within an arm's distance of them as they passed down the
aisle. One elderly woman kissed the hand of one of the Marines as he
passed by her.
The applause, whistles and cheering didn't stop for a long
time.
When we were finally airborne, I was not the only civilian
checking his conscience as to the delays in "me" getting home, finding my
easy chair, a cold beverage and the remote in my hand.
The se men had done for all of us and I had been
complaining silently about "me" and "my" issues I took for granted the
everyday freedoms I enjoy and the conveniences of the American way of
life.
I took for granted that others had paid the price for my
ability to moan and complain about a few minutes delay to "me" while those
Heroes were going home to their loved ones.
I attempted to get my selfish outlook back in order and
minutes before we landed, I suggested to the attendant that she announce
over the speaker a request for everyone to remain in their seats until our
heroes were allowed to gather their things and be first off the plane.
The cheers and applause continued until the last Marine
stepped off and we all rose to go about our too often taken for granted
everyday freedoms.
I felt proud of them.
I felt it an honor and a privilege to be among the first
to welcome them home and say "Thank You for a job well done."
I vowed that I will never forget that flight nor the
lesson learned. I can't say it enough, THANK YOU to those Veterans and
active servicemen and women who may read this and a prayer for those who
cannot because they are no longer with us.
GOD BLESSAMERICA!

Mark,
You know as well as I do that this type of sentiment is not going to go over well on this site. I see this as mainly a provocative attempt to stir up trouble and frankly you should know better than to post this sort of thing. What's going on in Iraq is a f**ked-up mess and if you think about it, it's not something to really be proud of, but at best to be understood as a grim reality. These soldiers are being used as pawns in a cynical game of realpolitik, and the lives being lost are not for any ideals or for their homeland, but only for gains in a geo-political chess game.
I'm sorry. I don't mean to insult you, but I really think you need to reflect on what motivated you to post this.

I don't care how it goes over on this site. I'm going to post it anyway. If you can't handle a different point of view, then maybe you shouldn't be here.
Don't insult me with this "I support the troops but oppose the war" BS. You can't have it both ways. It's obvious you have a grudge against servicemen and what they're doing. So why don't you just go ahead and call them baby-killers and get it over with. And stop pretending you really care.

I'm curious about these stories. I see this and many
others just like it posted all over the net. They have
over the top patriotic tone, something to do with "who
the real heroes are" and end with "God Bless
America".
This story and many more like it are untrue, yet I see
them all over the net. Obviously, anyone who
disagrees with you won't change their views just by
reading these, so it's kind of like preaching to the
choir. Why is there a need to post these stories?

I hear you brother, why indeed! I think MarktheShark is a few brain cells shy of human intelligence, as are most of the others who post these naive sentiments.

If you're posting this facetiously to try and get a rise out of the more outspoken members of the forum who don't agree with Bush's policy (which I guess is what your winking icon is suggesting), you're a pathetic fool.
But, hey, you got me to respond, so I guess you got your rocks off...

Mark,
You know as well as I do that this type of sentiment is not going to go over well on this site.
Mark,
If you're posting this facetiously to try and get a rise out of the more outspoken members of the forum who don't agree with Bush's policy (which I guess is what your winking icon is suggesting), you're a pathetic fool.
But, hey, you got me to respond, so I guess you got your rocks off...

Nothing naive here my friend. But you seem to have a problem distinguishing the good guys from the bad guys. What's the matter, gray got your tongue?

I think Mark is right the servicemen do deserve some applause even though I am personally against the war they are risking their lives for a cause they believe is right, good for them.
On the other hand Iraq really has nothing to do with 9/11 It was that Osama bin Laden fellow who assaulted us not Sadam Hussein so why are we Iraq again?

Come on even the buildings on fire Trotsky? That's going a bit too far. O.k. the decapitated head had to go, and the suicide images, well up to personal taste I suppose. But the one picture of just the buildings on fire????
Oh and calling 9/11 a tragedy is shading the truth a bit don't you think? A natural disaster is a tragedy. This was an attack by a group of vile and evil men. This fact must never be forgotten. It wasn't a tragedy, it was an outrage.

OK, the point here is that Trotsky made an admin decision. If you wish to question that decision with Trotsky, do so by PM. Do not simply post the same images again, without his agreement.

I hear you brother, why indeed! I think MarktheShark is a few brain cells shy of human intelligence, as are most of the others who post these naive sentiments.

The brain cell comment was uncalled for (and let's admit it, just a bit childish). I am sincerely curious as to why these stories are printed all over the net and follow the same formula. Why are people posting these? I'm also wondering why there aren't any that end with something like "God Save New Zealand" or "God Save Norway"? Unless I'm missing something (which is very possible) this seems to be uniquely American.

WTF, guys??? How is clapping for a servicemen returning home from Iraq offensive???? |
Why clap for them in the first place? Because they followed the stupid orders of a stupid government that sent them into a stupid war? There are other things I'd rather clap for. Military actions are nothing to be clapped about. It might be slightly different if the troops had been the successfull defenders against an invader, but this is clearly not the case here. No, I'd rather clap my hands for anyone who says "This war was an outrage", in essence people like Susan Sontag or Noam Chomski. "He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already
earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake,
since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace
to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at

"Patriotismism" comes close, but is not the same), how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble
war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base
an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war
is nothing but an act of murder."

I did and got no response. |
This is a highly innacurate picture ... mts ... and I am only answering this because you have been here awhile.
Firstly in case you didn't know it ... the PM's have an outbox feature
which allow you to see whether a message has been opened by its
recipient ...
The sequence ...
I saw the pix of 9/11 and messaged you a friendly PM that said welcome
back, but asking you to bear in mind that the pictures might offend
people on the site.
I then did some other stuff ... only to find that you'd pasted a
decapitated head ... at which point I checked and ensured that you had
read the message ... it was marked opened ...
I then sent you the two minute warning PM and went and copy/pasted the rules on the thread ...
After observing that the two minute warning message was also opened but
that you had failed to take action, I waited for a little while more. I
then closed the thread in order to delete the pictures ... I actually
took my time because I wanted to copy and paste the pictures ...
Just when I completed editing these pictures (and yes, because I was in
a rush, I deleted the burning towers pix ... it's amazing how people
cross the line ... and then in retrospect expect you to respect it
faithfully!) your message came through asking me which ones should be
deleted.
I was in a rush and did not have the time to reply, but when I returned
later it transpired that you had reposted your pix here ... only for
Easy Livin to delete them ... I apologise for not replying directly to
your message, but you have to know that your response came after the
fact ...
Now, perhaps the timing of our messages was just unfortunate ... let's hope that is the case.

My old friend Reed Lover has this to say:
It has been said that one way that George Bush clings to power is by creating a climate of fear. This tactic is quite obviously working on some members.
There are thousands of atrocities committed against people every year yet most people only see it as a problem when they are comitted in their own back yard.
It seems obvious to me that if you attack other nations, tinker with their internal affairs or constantly denounce their chosen beliefs then eventually they are going to strike back at you.
9/11 was a terrible, unspeakable atrocity, but ultimately it is just one more example of man's inhumanity to man.All sides are guilty and not just "a little bit".
Muslims persecute each other, bomb Christians and each other, and their leaders are hypocrites. They hide behind religion to further their own lust for power, accumulate of wealth and create their "place in history".
The West persecutes its own kind (if imposing poverty on your own is not persecution then what is?),it bombs the innocent citizens of faraway countries and of course the leaders are hypocrites. They hide behind religion to further their own lust for power, accumulation of wealth and create their "place in history".
Some Roger Waters:
You have a natural tendency To squeeze off a shot You're good fun at parties You wear the right masks You're old but you still Like a laugh in the locker room You can't abide change You're at home an the range You opened your suitcase Behind the old workings To show off the magnum You deafened the canyon A comfort a friend Only upstaged in the end By the Uzi machine gun Does the recoil remind you Remind you of sex Old man what the hell you gonna kill next Old timer who you gonna kill next I looked over Jordan and what did I see Saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris I swam in your pools And lay under your palm trees I looked in the eyes of the Indian Who lay on the Federal Building steps And through the range finder over the hill I saw the frontline boys popping their pills Sick of the mess they find On their desert stage And the bravery of being out of range Yeah the question is vexed Old man what the hell you gonna kill next Old timer who you gonna kill next Hey bartender over here Two more shots And two more beers Sir turn up the TV sound The war has started on the ground Just love those laser guided bombs They're really great For righting wrongs You hit the target And win the game From bars 3,000 miles away 3,000 miles away We play the game With the bravery of being out of range We zap and maim With the bravery of being out of range We strafe the train With the bravery of being out of range We gained terrain With the bravery of being out of range With the bravery of being out of range We play the game With the bravery of being out of range

Mark,
You know as well as I do that this type of sentiment is not going to go over well on this site.
Mark,
If you're posting this facetiously to try and get a rise out of the more outspoken members of the forum who don't agree with Bush's policy (which I guess is what your winking icon is suggesting), you're a pathetic fool.
But, hey, you got me to respond, so I guess you got your rocks off...
| You know, I just love it when people like you go for the name-calling and personal attacks when backed into a corner.
Nothing naive here my friend. But you seem to have a problem distinguishing the good guys from the bad guys. What's the matter, gray got your tongue?

No one's backed into a corner here. I'm calling it like I see it. If someone posts a politically-charged nationalistic, overly-sentimental piece of drivel on a prog-rock website with forum members from many different cultures, someone who I believe knows exactly what he is doing, I see that as the act of a jackass.
I say that without the least bit of defensiveness. That's my opinion of what you did.

Proud huh? Tricky word. I guess when you really get down to it no war is something to be proud of. It's generally the outcome of war that you can be proud of and not the war itself. I know that sounds contradictary, but it is somewhat true. In this case it's the possibilty of Democratic society in the Midlle East. And if there's any success to that, then maybe that's something to be proud of. But it's too early to tell at this point.
Is this war illegitimate? Again, it's still too early to tell. Even during our own Civil War, people were saying it was illegitimate. WWII as well. This kind of dissention is nothing new. Did Bush "lie" to get us in? Well, if you're going to say that then you may as well say every politician in our Capital and in the Parliment lied too. They were crying about Saddam's WMDs for years leading up to this.
All in all, yes I can say I'm proud of the men and women making the sacrifice for this. But I'm not proud of the fact that we got into this mess because of some assholes who get their jollies out killing as many non-Muslims as possible.

How were they lied to? The powers that be all had the same intell. You think Bush woke up one night and nudged Laura saying "Honey, we need to go into Iraq. So I'm going to make up a story about WMDs to justify it." And her response would probably have been "That's nice dear. But since you're up, you think you can function now?"

Ok, maybe it is not my business - but since some people of the so-called 1st World sometimes refer to Brazil as being an integrant nation of the Western Civilization, I'd still like to know who at the very beginning (and for several years after) organized, funded, instructed and armed the infamous Al-Qaeda?

Sorry, Mark, but I can't understand you. I can be proud of my own achievements, but how somebody can be proud of the achievement of others with which he has nothing to do is beyond me. And the "achievement" was the killing of a few thousand people. Hardly something to be proud of. Get some of that patriotism poison out of your bloodstream; it confuses clear thinking. The world doesn't need claqueurs for half-brained politicians.

Join the service Friede. Then maybe you would understand. It's called commradery. Oh I know we have vets like myself here who probably hate Bush and the war as well. But I think deep down they're going to still pat them on the back regardless.
I only went after Bluetail because he seems to think that because since I'm in the minority here I should be restricted to what kind of threads I can post. Wrong answer! It's not going to happen. It will not happen. So he can get that burr out of his rectum right now.
As for clear thinking, well I don't think it's very unclear to know right and wrong or who's good and evil. Is there a risk at this type of black and white thinking? Of course! Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were B&W thinkers. But then again so was Lincoln, Ghandi, Churchill and FDR.
It's real easy to be passive. Anybody can do that. But the real courage is taking the risk on whether you're going to go down the black road or the white. Who knows? For all we know Iraq could very well end up a Democratic oasis and help stablize that area. And no not for oil either! That arguement is getting as old as Cognac!
But if everybody insists that it'll never happen, freedom is not for everybody and all these other defeatist mentalities that seem to permeate all over, well guess what? That's exactly what'll happen. We'll just end up dealing with more oppressive dictators and terrorists.
You think people like Cindy Sheehan are courageous? What's so courageous about opposing a war in a country that allows you to do so? If you want to show courage, go to Tehran and protest the anti-Semitic remarks from their current president. Or better yet, go march down the street of Pyongyang, North Korea and protest the atrocities going on there.
But nobody's going to do that now, right? But when somebody does "Oooh! They're just as evil as the oppressors!" Talk about confusion! And that my friends is why I'll stack the courage of soldiers up against any Western World war protestor. So kick back in your cozy flats or dorm rooms, these are the people who are really making a difference.

"Is this war illegitimate? Again, it's still too early to tell"
No it was clear since the very beggining:
-First, USA gone there without ONU's aproval.
-Second, they invaded this country without declaring war first, which is another violation of war's rights.
-Third, and not least, the reasons invoked were not the real ones. Remember the poor pic showing a plane-view of a vague warehouse, and Rumsfeld telling that there were mass destruction weapons and everybody knows that it's a rough lie. Everybody also knows that Saddam's government had less to do with Ben Laden than Bush and his family itself!!!
Moreover, many innocents have been killed, USA has made many experiments with uranium and others weapons on Irak territory. Doing that is the best way to create hundreds of future terrorist ready to do attacks against USA, but not only...
All that is unworthy of a so-called "democraty".

This is a prime example of reductio ad absurdum. Yet within your attempt
at satire, lies more than a grain of truth.
Reports from the intelligence services were considered very selectively by
both the US and UK governments in taking the decision to go to war. In
other words, the intelligence was not approached with an open mind and
used as a decision-making tool. Rather, a decision was taken that the war
should begin and the intelligence used to justify that decision.
In the case of the US, that decision was based partly on the desire to
secure Iraq's oil reserves, and partly on the States' self-perception that is
a global policeman (global bully would be nearer the mark).
In the case of the UK, the Government was performing badly on home
affairs, and believed a "quick win" in an international war would shore up
its ailing position. The problem for Tony Blair has been that the public
has not reacted in the same way as they did to the Falklands War - mainly
because that war was in reaction to an illegal invasion of a British
overseas territory by a foreign power, whereas in Iraq the US and the UK
actively started the war.
To their eternal discredit, many of my colleagues here in the Conservative
opposition voted in favour of the war, since they believed the intelligence
presented by Blair. Frankly, they should have known better, and hopefully
do now.
As for the US, my view is that Iraq will become a second Vietnam, and
history will not look favourably upon those who instigated, participated in
and supported this military action.

It does annoy me that people still look at war from such a romantic point of view. You don't invade a country whether it's for oil or building democracy. You just don't,as it doesn't benefit anyone (apart from the aggressor) and so far it hasn't brought any benefit to Iraq and isn't at all likely to ever do so (unless you think decorative stuff like their new constitution makes up for the damage done to the country). The army itself tends to breed assholes rather good people, though I dont mean that as an insult to anybody. Credit should be given to the soldiers, but for taking on a tougher job than others rather than fighting for a futile idea.

Saddam Hussein's dreadful regime is simplistic in the extreme. I have
never met Saddam, but a friend and political colleague of mine (an MP
under John Major in the nineties) did. His meeting commenced with
Saddam showing him a video of him (Saddam) murdering people, much in
the way that a normal person would display holiday snaps, and convinced
my friend that Saddam was a deranged lunatic. In my view, he should
have been taken out in the 1991 Gulf War, when the Allies had a clear
mandate to do so (since Iraq had committed an act of war by invading
Kuwait). This war, however, has been deceitful and based on false
intelligence, and has replaced Saddam's malign rule with a huge power
vacuum - which may ultimately be far more dangerous for the people of
Iraq, let alone the peoples of the West.

Well Stone, Tony is what I call a victim of gray-brainwashing. People like him look at things through gray eyeballs. To them, there's no good or evil. No good guys or bad guys. Everything is nuanced. We must learn to understand the actions of terrorists and sympathize with them. Everytime an atrocity is committed, they try to find some "good" in it. And of course vice versa.
It's really a very confusing mental state. But they call it an open mind. But in reality it's basically having no direction at all.

Your problem is that if your side perpetrate a terrorist atrocity it isnt terrorism. If your perceived enemy takes action against you to protect its interests,or the security of its lands then it is terrorism.
To the average Iraqi YOU ARE THE TERRORIST!!!
It isnt about good or evil it is about pointing out wrong. I find no good in any act of terrorism-Arab,Jew,American,Bristish,Irish,Russian,Aghan.All who go out and kill indescriminately-all are equally disgusting filth and anyone who condones this behaviour has lost their humanity and their dignity.

It's not my fault if there are some brain-washed, Bush-following-to-the-death, manics who will follow the President and his propaganda until the very end of the world. This is not my fault, nor is the war. And remember, those who supported the war, or at least most of them who were so unlucky as to fall under the hypnotic spell of the White House and CIA propaganda ("false intelligence") actually believed their country was going to be attacked again.

I realize this, but you're not getting my point. Americans were fortunate to live for half a cnetury without any attacks on their soil. But when the attack came, it was atrocious. Nearly 3,000 killed in one day! I can't speak for myself because I was young (still am) and ignorant, but I'm sure we were in a state of shock and were just looking for some guidence. Sadly, it came in the form of the manipulative Bush administration, who turned that need for guidence into power he could weild massivly.
Now, I won't donwnplay the IRA attack that were continuously happening in England, but I believe they prepared you for attacks and helped you realize that bad things can happen. In other words, you were on guard, whereas we were not.

Sorry -- just plain old nazi, then.
C'mon, "Doc," come right out and admit it -- you'll feel better: you are an actual nazi, and (under a cowardly pseudonym, of course), support the types of ideals and policies that many thousands of your clearer-headed countrymen died defeating not so very long ago.
Thankfully, the fact that you choose a music forum (a largely left-leaning one, at that) as your vehicle to spew your hateful, psychopathic, racist (and misogynist) poison points to your being a rather insignificant little nazi, and obviously none too bright. There is hope for this old world yet, it seems!
Don't get all in a fuhrer, now -- perhaps there is a small animal to hurt, a shed to set alight, or an "ethnic" grave to desecrate nearby?
If the jackboot fits, wacko.

BTW, "Doc," I firmly support deportation too: yours, from here, for repeatedly using this once-fine forum as a platform to spread hatred.
Cheers, you sawed-off Eichmann!
PS: You seem rather tense: got a girlfriend yet? No? Too bad Eva Braun is no longer available....

Yippee...Peter's back. The consummate bleeding heart liberal who would probably just as soon help al queda strap the bombs on their suicide bombers. Sorry guys, but if this jerk gets away with calling me a neo-nazi then I get to call him an al queda sympathizer.

Just because I'm not helping those poor oppressed muslims bomb america does not mean I'm a nazi. But people like you whether you intend to or not are helping them by standing up for their "rights" to bomb american buildings and kill innocent american civilians by allowing them to remain in our country and by allowing them not to be searched at our airports and subway stations. Because of course racial profiling is more repugnant than killing a few men, women and children. Especially when those killed are just americans. Who cares about them anyway. Right Peter? I know you don't live in this country but many of your insane liberal-minded freaks do and they all work at the aclu, helping to defend evil against the forces of good.
As for you...you are an uptight, overly sensitive excuse for a man. I would expect over-sensitivity from a woman, but jesus. Oops. There I go being misogynistic again (notice that the adjective form of the word is misogynistic, not misogynist).
As for this being a music site, I know you would love for the owners to do away with the dnrtm section because it might hurt someone's feelings, yours it seems. But the fact is there is a discussions not related to music where people do discuss politics, so deal with it. Finally, my IQ is 152, what's yours?
