I wouldn't dream (no pun intended) of taking anything away from Mike Portnoy for his drumming which is simply unbelievable.
I must however give the nod to Neil Peart. Just read/listen to his lyrics. Add that to his ability to play a mean set of drums & you have the hands-down winner.

In my opinion both drummers are OVERESTIMATED. Just listen to me before start throwing rocks.
The thing that every kid around 14-17 who plays drums think he's the drum god (and second Joey Jordinson) .
Well he is really good both technically musicaly. He is also very
creative and generaly a drum genious but I assure you he's not a drum
god. I personaly dont like him so much cause his sound seems to flat
for me, it doesnt have the depth I would like to hear from a drum kit.
Moreover I dont like the drum parts on DT songs (havent heard what he
does away from them). For some reason they seem a bit mechanic to me. |
Every kid in that age bracket is probably listening to Travis Barker of
Blink182 or Danny Cary of Tool. If they are even introduced to
Prog, it's a blessing.

I have to say Danny Carey sounds better for me but surely not one of the best. I prefer drummers like Steve Gadd and Dennis Chambers.

I like Portnoy's drumming very much but I'm on the opinion that Neil Peart is a much more balanced drummer that's why I prefer him over Portnoy. Without Peart's influence, perhaps Portnoy's drumming woundn't be the way we now hear it. This comparison seems similar to Chopin being compared to Bach; they're not exactly contemporaries with each other since Peart was there first so it's a bit hard to compare who's drum work is better.

For me, Peart is a great, very great drummer and he never try to amaze us, he play on a group called Rush with 2 guys. Portnoy is a great drummer too but, everytime i listen to him, i always the feeling that he try to steal de show. Peart have make his place among the greatest. Portnoy shall learn to play as a drummer, member of a band (More than one in his case) and not à drummer who always try to amaze us. If he can play the way he do in Liquid Tension Experiment..... Maybe my vote will be change.
