 Topic: A question! Do your personal friends ....

... listen to Prog Rock? The best, I can claim is 'Pink Floyd' (yeah.... a few friends of mine know this band! Geeezzzzzz.). Few even know who ELP is. And; I'm 51 years old!!
That's about as good as it gets for me, folks!
So; how many of your personal friends get into this wonderful genre of Progressive Rock??!!
And; of course, many of us remember when it was new!!!!!!

I'm a teenager, everyone knows/many listen to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and of course Pink Floyd. But that's just my crowd, most people prefer rap and pop-music over talent. I CAN believe a 51 year old doesn't know who Emerson Lake and Palmer is though. I can make a comparison, my mother (who is almost 51) did not know who Creedence Clearwater Revival was until I proved it to her one day. Many people forget the good stuff as time goes by, prog or not. I wonder if your personal friends would recognize Lucky Man if they heard it, Greg H..

Yes, some of them are great fans of prog, classic rock and jazz. Very often the interest to music grew up into a real friendship. Others listen music ocassionally, but no one is indifferent.

Im a teenager and my friends listen to prog only because I give them
accesible bands to listen to but none have discovered prog bands by
their own...yet

I've gotten a few friends into prog (the more accessible stuff like
Camel and Yes's 1971 albums), but nobody's hardcore about it like
myself.

I'm the only one who listens to prog. My best friend listens to metal and hard rock. He listens to a lot of the hard rock radio stations too  . In our high school days, we both listened to punk, then in my senior year I got into black metal, and he still liked punk. From black metal, I started to explore other genres of metal, where then he got into metal, but I always liked the obsure stuff and he liked the "ear friendly" stuff. When I was listening to metal with growls/screaming, he would only listen to bands with a good voice. Now he listens to all types of vocals. I feel like I've always been a step ahead with music. I tried to play some prog for him, but he doesn't like it. The music he likes has to have a distinct riff, and no "weird" stuff like keyboards. He also doesn't like acoustic guitar in music, it always has to be loud and in your face. I don't know about you..but I need some soft parts in music, or else I'd go crazy!

For me only 1 other friend of mine is into prog and all it has to offer. Other then that, im pretty much the only prog head i know. We stick together to combat the haters! Long Live Prog

my girlfriend, and my 2 best friends like prog, and my girlfriends dad,
hes a badass, and im 16 and hes like 50 something, and i sometimes take
him by surprise some of the stuff i know. ALL THANKS TO YOU

I'm 18 and to be honest with you in my age group prog has made a real
come-back. Just about everyone like Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Yes about 5
people I know like Marillion, I know dozens of people who are big Dream
Theater fans, I also know loads of people who like Rush, they're
another all time favourite. To be honest with you, I think there is a
new-wave of prog appreciation from people about my age who are fed up
of nu-metal, punk, R&B and want to see something with a bit more
depth and emotion and as a result of this PROG WILL NEVER DIE!!!

Yah im only 17 and Prog has now fully taken over my life...and ive never been happier. Alot of people listen to Zep and Floyd but thats only because its popular classic, i bet if u asked someone our age to name more then one album of led zeppelin or two songs worth of Floyd they couldnt answer you. Last time i threw in a Caravan album, my buddies looked at me with dismay and thats when the onslaught of laughter came...

stuff i like.. I've recently got a friend into Genesis, Mahavishnu
Orchestra and Frank Zappa

To be honest with you, I haven't actually found this, most people seem
to be really big on these bands, I don't know whether it is just a
regional thing though, it may be different in Canada.

For me; a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I was in the Air Force between 1973-1980. I was in Tucson, AZ. I moved away when I got out. Many of my friends at the time were into Prog. And; maybe they still are. But; I haven't kept in contact with any of them in the past 15 years or so. Kind of unfortunate, really. But; that's how things go usually.
And; the other thing, many people change with the times. I really didn't. Don't get me wrong. As new music came along, some of it I did like. Some of it, I didn't. I was never much of a fan of pop - only a little of it.
Today; the people, that I personally know, would not know who Nektar, Gentle Giant, Renaissance, Triumvirat (I was, and am a fan of Triumvirat  - they filled a gap when ELP wasn't doing anything), and others. Some of the guys, I know that are older than me, are Pink Floyd and Beatles fans. But; they aren't familiar with Gentle Giant, for instance.
Oh well. I'm seeing bands here on this forum, that I am not familiar with. And; I need to check of them out!!

I have one friend who does like a lot of heavy rock and prog. I've known him since we were kids and we both got into heavy metal together in our early teens.
Generally though, no, my friends dont like prog rock. A few of them can tolerate a little Rush or Pink Floyd but thats about it

It's funny, but most of my closest friends do like prog as well. I guess because we made friends in the first place because we shared a same sort of musical perspective.
