... listen to Prog Rock? The best, I can claim is 'Pink Floyd' (yeah.... a few friends of mine know this band! Geeezzzzzz.). Few even know who ELP is. And; I'm 51 years old!!

That's about as good as it gets for me, folks!

So; how many of your personal friends get into this wonderful genre of Progressive Rock??!! 

And; of course, many of us remember when it was new!!!!!!    

For me only 1 other friend of mine is into prog and all it has to offer. Other then that, im pretty much the only prog head i know. We stick together to combat the haters! Long Live Prog

For me; a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I was in the Air Force between 1973-1980. I was in Tucson, AZ. I moved away when I got out. Many of my friends at the time were into Prog. And; maybe they still are. But; I haven't kept in contact with any of them in the past 15 years or so. Kind of unfortunate, really. But; that's how things go usually.

And; the other thing, many people change with the times. I really didn't. Don't get me wrong. As new music came along, some of it I did like. Some of it, I didn't. I was never much of a fan of pop - only a little of it.

Today; the people, that I personally know, would not know who Nektar, Gentle Giant, Renaissance, Triumvirat (I was, and am a fan of Triumvirat  - they filled a gap when ELP wasn't doing anything), and others. Some of the guys, I know that are older than me, are Pink Floyd and Beatles fans. But; they aren't familiar with Gentle Giant, for instance.

Oh well. I'm seeing bands here on this forum, that I am not familiar with. And; I need to check of them out!!

I have one friend who does like a lot of heavy rock and prog. I've known him since we were kids and we both got into heavy metal together in our early teens.

Generally though, no, my friends dont like prog rock. A few of them can tolerate a little Rush or Pink Floyd but thats about it

It's funny, but most of my closest friends do like prog as well. I guess because we made friends in the first place because we shared a same sort of musical perspective.

well my g/f is a marillion nut(she prefers hogarth over fish)and is really into ptree, a close friend of mine is also really into ptree and really likes ayreon and my best friend is obsessed with elp and rush  but those 3 are really the only people close to me who listen to prog

My old friends have ages ranging from 45 up to 50 and they know and like prog, at least the 'classic' bands: Genesis, Yes, Floyd, ELP, Tull... but it shall be explained due the fact that they began to pay attention to music in the beginning of the 70s, when prog was king. But none of them are real prog fans in the sense of knowing bands less known, hearing experimental works, searching for new bands, etc.

The real prog-fans I know are my eldest son and two of his friends all with ages around 20. My youngest son (age 15) is entering the prog world smoothly.

Not really... but my best male friend loves Pink Floyd and Yes and i think he likes Liquid Tension Experiment, he has almost 20 years, but he isnt a prog listener, my best female friend loves some kind of metal like Opeth, Ayreon , Dark Tranquility, Anathema , and she loves Tool and Mars Volta she is 20 years old...

I dont have many friends, and of course my list of "prog friends " is almost empty

Few of them know what I am talking about, especially with the more modern bands like Ankedoten, Paatos, Anglagard, Djam Karet etc. I have tried to spread the word through our workplace MP3 club, and some find it interesting for a one-off listen but that is about as far as it goes. I remember talking about King Crimson to one guy at work and he said "Oh, yeah, that album with the screaming face on it. Wonder whatever happened to them?"

There are a few enlightened souls in my social circles but not many. The guy I started my first band with at age 15 is still into all the old stuff and a lot of the new, and another mate is heavily into KC, Tool, Mars Volta etc. Mrs CandyAppleRed has very different tastes in music to me, apart from our mutual love of Runrig, but whenever I play Yes or Genesis, Paatos, White Willow etc she always says "that's nice - what is it?", so there is hope there even after 20 years together!

Most of my friends listen to non-prog music, but some of my friends are into the good stuff. I've introduced my metalhead freinds to Fantomas and Mr Bungle.

One of my friends is really big into Yes, Fantomas, Mr Bungle, and Frank Zappa. I've introduced him to Genesis and King Crimson as well.

A couple of my friends from school like Zappa, Beefheart, and The Mars Volta.They've introduced me to Primus, Tom Waits, Wilco, and Quicksilver Messenger service.

Another one of my friends is a big jazz and metal fan. He likes Dream Theater, Opeth, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Mahavishnu Orchestra (although he hates Fantomas and The Residents). We recently went to a Sonny Rollins concert and listened to a lot of King Crimson and fusion-era Miles Davis.

Bulbous 45 is a friend of mine, and we lend each other CDs and vinyl all the time. I've introduced him to System of a Down, Genesis, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Fantomas, Mr Bungle, and The Mars Volta. He's introduced me to The Velvet Underground, Pere Ubu, and Thirteenth Floor Elevators.

I can't get anyone into it. Even one of my friends who loves "The Wall" and "Darkside of the Moon" thinks any of the other prog I show him is bad. I am constantly showing my best friend my new favorite song or album and  even if they like it all they can say is, "It's ok."

Most kids these days do not understand prog, you can't just listen to it, but to really appreciate it you must experience it. When I offer my friends to listen to an album or even just a song while they are doing nothing else and just concentrating on the music, they think the idea is stupid, and don't understand the power prog music can have if you focus on it.

Most music these days does not require much attention or immagination, (to write or listen to), so the very thought of listening to a song in order to "experience" it seems like something that can only be attained through marijuana. So many do not understand that just a little focus, deep thought, and persistance can help you find even the weirdest music enjoyable. My friends do not understand that you can not get much enjoyment out of just listening to a prog song while you are busy doing other things.

Even I think prog is boring when I'm busy, (except for when I'm on Prog Archives, that is absolutely acceptable and nessecary.)

I'm 45 and most of the gang I grew up with are into prog.We prefered it during the 70's/80's as an alternative to the disco crap the media bombarded us with.I guess thats why we also liked punk and jazz.I'm just glad I married a woman like minded. Now if only my kids would listen.
