a few years ago i when i started listening to prog, one of my friends said jokingly,

"ohh so you listen to music about slaying dragons and castles."

i think it's a pretty common stereotype that prog is epic. maybe in some cases

it's true. the epic vocals/lyrics are pretty lame though.

it's also a common stereotype that prog is music that is only written to appeal to

the intellectual capacities. again, in some cases it's true, but i think that the superior

prog bands can combine emotionalism with superb musicianship.

Actually, Im sure the stereotypes are different in every region, I mean... a lot of you seem to think proggers are nerds who can't get laid and bla bla bla... But I live in Quebec, and ... proggers are... respected and cool people. we're always partying or getting high in a friend's lounge where we're like 4-6 people sitting on couches while listening to Genesis, Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, and some prog.

Obviously too... the proggers I know are really into philosophy, SMART BUT SUPER SMART PEOPLE... we're all in the "smart class"... we have long hair, we're kind of hippyish here and we like to think, we love good music.. to play good music and etc.

Anyways, that's how it is in Quebec, prog is damn well respected here.

Je viens du Québec aussi .

All of you prog lovers should come here if you have any problems with stereotypes. I am certainly not ashamed to wear my Yes and Genesis T-Shirts. Prog is cool here in Quebec!

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

I'd say you must wear rough jackets with a scarf. Did I mention that you surely are starving for sex, that you can't play an instrument right and that you walk bare-footed ?

The prog stereotype is "My music is better so much better than your's, I
don't care what it is, it can't compare to prog." At least that's what a lot of
people tell me. I think it might be because of my dismissal to listening to the
popular radio stations that my friends love to play.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

Well I can't say what the prog stereotype is, or else I'd be persecuted for saying so, but then I don't really have an opinion on this topic anyways. So I'll say what I think proggers should be.

We should be artsy intelligent folk who are adventurous, open-minded and hearty. I think we'd gain more respect if we were all like that.

Yet I must say that alot of us are just normal folk that just love our music as much the next guy (who may listen to too much indie rock and punk). There are a couple of us who are very ethical intellects and some of us who are elitists. Yet we're all people.

Don't know maybe you are an " I take zappa WAY to sereous"  guy and you're walking around with 2 ponytails and in a dress?

The reality is very different of course: Very few teenagers listen to
prog, apart from some of our distinguished members of course. [/

the rest of the world listens to?

Well in my opinion prog itself isn't so much a genre as a way of taking other genres to a higher level, hence the diversity of the music is reflected in the diversity of the fans. There is no classic prog fan like there are "classic" hip-hop fans and metalheads for example.

Someone in this forums answered once something like that:

"Well, I'll roll my 20-sided dice and tell you the answer" (not literal, but you get the idea).

I think this was the funniest and most ironic answer I've read in ages
