Topic: TOOL.......prog? Posted: July 22 2005 at 15:06 |
I am a huge fan of this band and see them praised and denounced in pretty much equal measure on this site. But I see some people don't consider them prog or prog metal and that astounds me because their last 2 albums are most definitely prog metal. What does everyone else think?
And I think they are prog and one of the best bands out there right now.Catch them live if you like them and haven't seen them yet, their performance live is perfection...flawless.

Of course they are prog!
VERY few bands these days are doing as much to push music forward as Tool. Theirs is the most complex, layered, mathematical, beautiful rock music made (IMO of course). Every note of the music is meaningful and in the perfect place. I could go on for hours about the Lateralus album alone.
I can't wait for the new album and hopefully the subsequent tour. There are rumors of a live DVD coming out in August, but nothing has been confirmed as far as i know.

Yes, but I don't like them that much. A boring band for me.

I like them ... but I don't have any of their albums, and I never get around to buy one. I'll set up a ebay search for aenima and lateralus.
BTW: Do they still tour? As far as I know, they've ben put "on hold" because APC takes precedence.

It's my theory that this is common for all truly great bands (or indeed artists in general).

Yes,they are still touring.Their new album Teleincision should be out this year and the band Isis is already rumored to be the opening act.And while Maynard James Keenan has stressed emphatically that APC is NOT a side project he has also stated that is his main band and takes precedence over everything.

If it weren't for Tool, it's entirely possible that I wouldn't be here
right now. Most of the people who don't consider them prog are
rabid prog-metal haters from what I've observed.

Well, they don't really consider them a Progressive Metal band.... THey've even said it, so guessing that's what you've heard, Greenback.

Prog indeed. If one doesn't think so, then play them Third Eye and look them square in the face and ask...Is this prog?

I think yes. But it's not important really. First of all they are marvellous band. My favourite is probably Aenima, but it's a tough decision.
I usually don't care for genres but please don't call them prog-metal. They have nothing in common with bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X or Threshold that for most listeners defined the genre. It's misleading.

I don't really care what they are defined as either.I just see so many confilicting opinions of the band on this forum that I was just curious as to what other people think.
And if I want to call them progressive metal I will damn well call them that.Do me a favor and don't dictate to me and tell me what to say and not to say.I agree with you that they have nothing in common with DT,Symphony X and the like, they are a very different breed of band, with a very unique sound. But their music is very very progressive.

It's the only label that fits. I think the problem is that most people use the genre to narrowly. Fans of Yes and Genesis often think that something which is labeled prog is supposed to be similar to Yes or Genesis. It's the same with DT, PoS, SyX and Prog Metal. There is so much more to the genre than just these three bands ...

The problem is that their sound is soooooo unique that you cant categorize them. If I had to I would say they are prog.
