heavy means.. metal?

To be honest: When I first saw that Ayreon are catgorized as Metal here, I also thought that it was odd. But the heavy riff-oriented passages are one of the Ayreon trademarks, and some albums (Actual Fantasy, Universal Migrator) are clearly Metal.

Universal Migrater Pt1 isnt even remotly metal, but part 2 has greats like Russel Allen and Micheal Romeo on.

I always refer to Pt.1 as "The Dream Sequencer" and to Pt.2 as "The Universal Migrator". Of course only Pt.2 is Metal.

Oh, I usuelly refer to Pt2 as Flight of the Migrater.

BTW: I refer to both of these albums as "the two Ayreon albums that could have much simpler and shorter names".

That is most definatly true, it should also have been sold as a double CD set instead of 2 seperate CD's. Thankfully I got the SE version witch is a double CD set.

BTW I havnt got Lateralus, I refuse to pay £17 for a CD.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Don't get me wrong, I really do like Lateralus. Prog. Yea, just barely. A lot of it was good heavy metal with a dark edge that grooves real well. They do incorporate enough different things into their playing to qualify as prog, IMO. Anyone who says otherwise probabaly has had an album of their's in full.

seems like I have to do some catching-up ... OR we'll need to promote the smaller bands some more:

  • Heaven's Cry
  • Adagio
  • The Gathering
  • Ivanhoe
  • Power of Omens
  • ...

If "incorporating different things into their playing" was an "qualifying" attribute of prog, SoaD would be 110% prog. I think it's more difficult ... IMO Tool are Prog mainly because of innovation and artistic value/integrity.

It easier for the more unknown artist to get high on the list as the unknown bands are only for them that is already into prog metal from before and usually gets pretty much overrated by them.

While known bands like Dream Theater gets bashed from non prog-metal fans that does not even like the genre and give them a weak rating.

You know, ive never thought about it like that but your right, someone who dosent like metal will go and rate DT down with low markings (and there are enough people doing that) will the lesser known bands are left to fans to rate.

^ but if you look at the ratings without reviews for the top DT albums, you'll see that there's bashing AND counter-bashing.

No Fates Warning in the top 20 , this is sad.

No Psychotic Waltz in the top 30, this is also sad.

But there is no Nightwish in the top 100!

They are in your top 10, that's fine, but not on the PA top 100.

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music (60%)
Excellent addition to any prog music collection (20%)
Good, but non-essential (6%)
Collectors/fans only (6%)
Poor. Only for completionists (9%)

20% of the reviews for DT are 3 or less and on riverside it is less then 10%

Octavarium is a bad example for your theory, because many prog metal fans also rate it 3 stars or less - including myself.

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music (71%)
Excellent addition to any prog music collection (12%)
Good, but non-essential (3%)
Collectors/fans only (5%)
Poor. Only for completionists (9%)

^ Scenes from a Memory is a good example - not much difference to Riverside as far as I can see.

Well i think it was a horrendrous battle over that Album as it has the most reviews of any album and 10% is rather high on the 1 star bar......Besides compared to what PROFESSIONAL music reviewers says this is rather low and seems a bit unprofessional

I'd like to think that most of these is hate driven while Riverside is a more unknown band and generally people that does not like their kind of music have not heard about it...

Please remember that Scenes got 260 reviews and 9% is 1 star ratings thats about 24 1 star reviews...while riverside got 80 reviews and 3% 1 star ratings thats a bit over 2 1 star reviews
