Topic: Future of 21st Century Prog Posted: November 18 2005 at 12:04 |
My votes go to The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree (definitely not to dream theater or to spock's beard). Tortoise and Djam Karet have made brilliant albums als well, but my two votes go to PT and TMV, it's fresh and genius!! (I don't like Opeth or Anathema that much)
Please specify in case I forgot a band (which I certainly did, I don't know that much about odern day prog)
cheers
falafelking.

For me its The mars Volta and Dream Theater.
Dream Theater becuase they still have a lot left to do and alot of other prog-metal bands are only catching up (Bar Threshold for us Brits) and the Mars Volta simply becuase they are pushing the boundaries of prog rock and what one can do with the modern equipment around them!

Porcupine Tree and The Mars Volta definately. Dream Theater is probably the most popular out these artists.

I voted for the Mars Volta. I know an indie rocker, however, who hates the Mars Volta and Dream Theater but loves Radiohead, so maybe Radiohead will save prog (if their next release blows everyone's minds, which I doubt).

We may not know what the future is when we hear it. When Yes or Genesis or King Crimson released their first albums probably no one had any idea where it would lead. There might be a group on this sight that we won't realize is the future until the future is the past.
Am I making sense? Sorry if I'm not.

Why would an indie rocker like Radiohead? They havn't made indie rock since 1995! He must be stuck in the past. Or you're getting Radiohead confused another band; Muse perhaps?
If the Mars Volta are the future of Prog rock, then it looks like Prog is gonna remain stuck in the 70's forever.
Radiohead's next album won't blow everyone's mind unfortunatley. There are too many mindless people about for that to be possible. Anyone with an open mind is in with a chance though.

You remember King Crimson lol
Nice try at subliminally trying to detur us from them though.
Besides even if there arn't many 70's artists that sound like TMA. There are hundreds of bands from the 80's & 90's that do.

I don't think Radiohead will save prog for the simple reason that I think they permanently broke up. I remember seeing them on their last tour and hearing in an interview afterwards that this was probably the last one they'd do.
EDIT: Nevermind, my roommate just told me they are making a new album.
Mars Volta... well, it remains to be seen. Certainly they show promise but I really have NO CLUE what the next album will sound like.
He isn't mentioned but I vote for Dan Swano. The man plays in like a million different bands and most of them are related to prog in some way.

I think TMV is. If only because of how many different types of people I know who enjoy them, metalheads, proggers, punks, all sorts of different people.

Please enlighten me because I would be very interested in purchasing these
artist's albums.
TMV sounds like King Crimson? They're influenced by them sure, but they
don't sound like them. At all.
