My votes go to The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree (definitely not to dream theater or to spock's beard). Tortoise and Djam Karet have made brilliant albums als well, but my two votes go to PT and TMV, it's fresh and genius!! (I don't like Opeth or Anathema that much)
Please specify in case I forgot a band (which I certainly did, I don't know that much about odern day prog)
cheers
falafelking.

For me its The mars Volta and Dream Theater.
Dream Theater becuase they still have a lot left to do and alot of other prog-metal bands are only catching up (Bar Threshold for us Brits) and the Mars Volta simply becuase they are pushing the boundaries of prog rock and what one can do with the modern equipment around them!

Porcupine Tree and The Mars Volta definately. Dream Theater is probably the most popular out these artists.

What have they done that's futuristic in the last ten years though?

I voted for the Mars Volta. I know an indie rocker, however, who hates the Mars Volta and Dream Theater but loves Radiohead, so maybe Radiohead will save prog (if their next release blows everyone's minds, which I doubt).

We may not know what the future is when we hear it. When Yes or Genesis or King Crimson released their first albums probably no one had any idea where it would lead. There might be a group on this sight that we won't realize is the future until the future is the past.
Am I making sense? Sorry if I'm not.

Why would an indie rocker like Radiohead? They havn't made indie rock since 1995! He must be stuck in the past. Or you're getting Radiohead confused another band; Muse perhaps?
If the Mars Volta are the future of Prog rock, then it looks like Prog is gonna remain stuck in the 70's forever.
Radiohead's next album won't blow everyone's mind unfortunatley. There are too many mindless people about for that to be possible. Anyone with an open mind is in with a chance though.

TMV win my vote. And I don't reme, ber any 70's artists (other than KC) that remotely sound like them.

You remember King Crimson lol
Nice try at subliminally trying to detur us from them though.
Besides even if there arn't many 70's artists that sound like TMA. There are hundreds of bands from the 80's & 90's that do.

I don't think Radiohead will save prog for the simple reason that I think they permanently broke up. I remember seeing them on their last tour and hearing in an interview afterwards that this was probably the last one they'd do.
EDIT: Nevermind, my roommate just told me they are making a new album.
Mars Volta... well, it remains to be seen. Certainly they show promise but I really have NO CLUE what the next album will sound like.
He isn't mentioned but I vote for Dan Swano. The man plays in like a million different bands and most of them are related to prog in some way.

I think TMV is. If only because of how many different types of people I know who enjoy them, metalheads, proggers, punks, all sorts of different people.

TMV sounds like King Crimson? They're influenced by them sure, but they
don't sound like them. At all.

Im sorry that sounded a little sarcastic. But Ipacial Section, if you do know
of any bands that are very similar to the Mars Volta I would like to hear it.

How Radiohead and Mars Volta are the future of prog is beyond me when neither arent anywhere near a prog band, and even if they were have you actually heard the last Mars Volta album and/or Kid A!.... i think i would prob listen to R&B and Rap if they were the future.
Let's get serious and more up to date and mention bands like Alias Eye, Little Atlas, Magic Pie and the excellent Cryptic Vision, true prog, true genius!

Post-rock is the new progressive music.
However, bands like Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree also show promise.

How the heck can porcupine Tree 'show promise'? they have been going for about 100 years and have still to come up with one decent album, i know cos i have tried most of them. Saw 'em live too backing Dream Theater, well i say i saw them but i fell asleep during their stint after two songs, i was woken for the main event though.
I thought this thread was about 'new' prog rock and its future.
As for Mars Volta, pass the vomit bucket.

Sadly its The Mars Volta, and im quite scared to see what heppens witht htat.
Dream Theater and Prcupine Tree ould be nice, but DT already ran the last prog revouloution so i tihnk theyre gonna just go with the flow for this one. and porcupine tree will jsut keep doing what theyre doing but noone will follow their style and sound unfortunatly.
But the Mars Volta are huge, and theyre prog so i think theres the first signs of the next wave of prog being commrcial. too bad it will be sh*t prog.
------------- I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Isn't that question kind of against the ideals of prog? If there were a
"pioneer for the future of prog," wouldn't anyone who followed that
band's lead be effectively non-progressive? I think the great thing
about the wide variety of modern prog artists is that we have such a
diverse range of different sounds; prog bands today aren't restricting
themselves to ripping off Yes and Genesis, and that's fantastic,
because now the genre can spread out in all different directions and
truly grow instead of being mostly regressive as it has been over the
past couple of decades.
So, my answer to the initial question would be all of them and none of them at the same time, if that makes any sense.

Possibly The Mars Volta, but have most of their fans realise that they're prog?
I would say IQ as "Dark Matter" is the best prog album for years.

I voted for Porcupine Tree. I think that Steve Wilson and friends are doing a really good job... but I also like the work of Mars Volta (really interesting) and Godspeed you Black Emperor!...
And if you are real fans of prog, check out the newest south american bands... maybe there is the real future of prog...
