In rock history there have been a lot of wackos that got stage time. Who is/was the most insane?

I hope I didn't leave out any other psychos.

I say GWAR.

Well, it depends on what you call "whacko", but I would definitely name Gong and Guru Guru too; unfortunately I never saw either of them live, but from what my brother told me about concerts of Guru Guru (and from what you can hear on their live albums) there are a lot of weird things going on on stage. Some might name Magma too; the whole idea of the space-ship crew "Kreuhn Köhrman" (not sure about spelling; would have to look it up) from planet Kobah is absolutely whacko. And don't get me wrong: I love being whacko; I'm whacko myself!

Your poll fails to mention the Residents and Syd Barrett.

The Residents are definetly the most insane band ever.

There was nothing insane about Frank Zappa. He was perfectly sane. He was just a genius.

And if you've ever known a true genius, then you know that their way of thinking is very close to insanity.

Faust used pinball machines and pneumatic drills onstage on their first UK tour, and on a 90s tour of the USA they had bricklayers building a real wall onstage during their show.

I was lucky enough to catch the Residents on their 13th anniversary tour and I have seen few stranger (or better) shows in my life.

In their heyday, Magma onstage were an awesome sight - they've toned down the theatrics these days, but they're still amazing musically.

In the non prog arena, Iggy Pop is probably the champion showman and still has amazing stamina.

Zappa and the Mothers seem to be topping the poll, but as a
Zappaphile who has seen Zappa live about 8 times, and heard
100s of bootlegs, I don't think "insane" is the right word for what
he did. Always surprising and funny, sometimes shocking, but
thoroughly controlled and intelligent, a Zappa concert was
always like a 3 ring circus: The feling of chaos and anarchy
coupled with its opposite, absolute control and discipline. It's no
secret that musicians were fired from his band for smoking
dope during a tour, because one couldn't play that complex
music under the influence. Insane is something else.
I wish I'd seen Arthur Brown's Journey live, judging by the
albums and the photos, that must have been a truly mad
experience.

First, there is the story of Syd Barret crumbling qualudes into his hair and as they melted under the stagelights, Syd looked like a human candle; then there's the story of Pink Floyd's American Bandstand appearance when during the songs lip synching, Syd stood totally catatonic and mute. I don't believed this episode was ever shown on air.
