In rock history there have been a lot of wackos that got stage time. Who is/was the most insane?
I hope I didn't leave out any other psychos.
I say GWAR.

Well, it depends on what you call "whacko", but I would definitely name Gong and Guru Guru too; unfortunately I never saw either of them live, but from what my brother told me about concerts of Guru Guru (and from what you can hear on their live albums) there are a lot of weird things going on on stage. Some might name Magma too; the whole idea of the space-ship crew "Kreuhn Köhrman" (not sure about spelling; would have to look it up) from planet Kobah is absolutely whacko. And don't get me wrong: I love being whacko; I'm whacko myself!

There was nothing insane about Frank Zappa. He was perfectly sane. He was just a genius.
And if you've ever known a true genius, then you know that their way of thinking is very close to insanity.

Faust used pinball machines and pneumatic drills onstage on their first UK tour, and on a 90s tour of the USA they had bricklayers building a real wall onstage during their show.
I was lucky enough to catch the Residents on their 13th anniversary tour and I have seen few stranger (or better) shows in my life.
In their heyday, Magma onstage were an awesome sight - they've toned down the theatrics these days, but they're still amazing musically.
In the non prog arena, Iggy Pop is probably the champion showman and still has amazing stamina.

Zappa and the Mothers seem to be topping the poll, but as a
Zappaphile who has seen Zappa live about 8 times, and heard
100s of bootlegs, I don't think "insane" is the right word for what
he did. Always surprising and funny, sometimes shocking, but
thoroughly controlled and intelligent, a Zappa concert was
always like a 3 ring circus: The feling of chaos and anarchy
coupled with its opposite, absolute control and discipline. It's no
secret that musicians were fired from his band for smoking
dope during a tour, because one couldn't play that complex
music under the influence. Insane is something else.
I wish I'd seen Arthur Brown's Journey live, judging by the
albums and the photos, that must have been a truly mad
experience.

First, there is the story of Syd Barret crumbling qualudes into his
hair and as they melted under the stagelights, Syd looked like a human
candle; then there's the story of Pink Floyd's American Bandstand
appearance when during the songs lip synching, Syd stood totally
catatonic and mute. I don't believed this episode was ever shown on air.

What kind of stuff did Zappa do on stage?
-------------
|

Zappa just had a lot of satirical and comedy factors in his live
performance. In the earliest incarnation of the Mothers, there
was often sort-of a "happening" atmosphere, audience
members could be invited up to perform on the instruments,
there was a lot of provocation, once some Marines were invited
up to destroy a baby doll, there was a big giraffe puppet that
ejaculated whipped cream on the audience, etc. Later, with Flo
and Eddie there was lots of parodying the holy cows of the rock
world, the subculture of groupies, etc., sort of like a vaudeville
show or subversive circus. Later bands continued to satirize
existing rock idols, the madness of American culture, FZ was a
master of incorporating whatever was going on with the
audience or band members, and creating spontaneous art out
of it. I don't think any of that could be categorized as "insane",
as it was always handled in a methodical, intelligent manner.

^^^ Good call... on a purely musical level, Zorn (in particular Naked City) is about as crazy as you can get!!!
|
Posted By: RoyalJelly

It depends on what you call insane, I've seen both Naked
City and Cobra live, and though the music was insanely
complex, there's a technical brilliance and control there that no
nutcake could muster. I do feel that Zorn's Naked City was a
real starting point for many of the interesting newer progressive
manifestations, post-modern, post-punk style collage things.
Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Thinking Plague, Hamster
Theater...it's hard to imagine any of this without Naked City.

I'd vote for the 3-man version of Genesis.
I mean, they recorded crap like "Invisible Touch" and "I Can't Dance" and publicly presented it as music. That tooks balls! Almost like Bush lying to the country and pretending there was a reason for the war against Iraq.

Wild Man Fischer is a good call although a very sad one. I get the feeling Zappa was manipulating the poor fellow but I could be wrong. Fisher was clinically ill, probably schizophrenic. I wouldn't necessarily call what he did 'music'. More like an insane vaudeville act.
My vote goes to the Magic Band circa 1969-1970.

actually GG allen used to eat his own poop on stage, and he requested all who attend his funeral beat his corpse.
and you guys also failed to mention the fact that one of the members of mayham murdered another and made a necklace from a peice of his skull, and then another member murdered him and went to jail. He then escaped jail but was caught again. The resaon the killed each other was because they thought one another was surpassing them in evil.
