Though I fully expected bands like YES to trounce GENESIS in the polls this one is more of a surprise! Gentle Giant beating Genesis, who'd have believed it? |

Ahh... a tricky one, but although I'm more familiar with Genesis there's only one album by them I love all the way through, and GG are also more adventurous, so they'll get my vote.

I never could get into Gentle Giant; too leftfield for me.
Im a huge Genesis fan, so this was quite easy .I prefer their sense of good solid songwriting much more than Gentle Giant`s complexity.

Unlike the YES/Genesis thread this one is a bit harder although as reitterated before Genesis is my all time favorite group of all time, Gentle Giant's music was extremely challenging, but not in a bad way, and quite virtuostic..... Many great albums and timeless songs... Their influence is now being shown in bands like Anglagard, Spock's Beard and Echolyn....

Genesis got my vote, but Gentle Giant is superior from a technical standpoint.

Genesis. One has to try to like GG - a definitive minus in my book.
Proggers had me going fo awhile thinking that having to desperately try
to like music was in fact a plus, until I heard jazz critics note that they're
less impressed with artists who only appeal to die-hard jazz enthusiasts.
It was then I realized that I too am less impressed with these types of
artists. GG, who fall into this category, are certainly talented, though. And
I like their albums alright.
Plus Genesis is so epic.

Wow... really close poll. Gentle Giant all the way, though.

Early Genesis were good, but I rate Gentle Giant equally high as Gesualdo, Beethoven, Stravinsky and suchlike, all composers who really found a totally new path. So Gentle Giant above any other prog band, but this poll is a bit unfair to Genesis.

I like early Genesis, but there is no question that my vote goes to Gentle Giant!

Very difficult choice, because they're both on my top three...If I had
to say progressive with a band I'd choose Gentle Giant, and also think
Genesis have never done an album like In a glass house, and in the end
Genesis betrayed their noble origins...despite it all in this moment I
go with Genesis, expecially because I find a bit of them in amost every
band I'm listening to. What would have been prog without Genesis??

That's exactly what happened to me, I heard of how good GG was and dl all their albums ; i listened to each like 4 times, and just hated them... i cannot stand to listen to Gentle Giant for even a second now.

How I could answer to such a question? Here we are speaking about TWO MILIAR STONES!
BTW I like GG a little bit more.

Gentle Giant by a mile......I always found Genesis extremely boring. It's a good band, but they leave me cold.
