Definately Genesis!!!!!
Of, course GG is a great band but none of their albums was as great as one of Genesis top four (NC, Foxtrot, SEBTP, Trick..)

Interetsing, both great bands if neither quite my favourites, allows me
to try and be objective....Gentle Giant have done the more radical,
progressive stuff yet...at their very best, Genesis produced (IMHO) the
better music...so I vote for them.

They're both great and why compare them?
Genesis are more relaxing for when I want to relax, GG are more challenging when I want to be challenged.
I'm neutral!

Genesis has more bad albums than Gentle Giant ("And Then There...", "Duke", "Abacab", "Genesis", "Invisible Touch", "We Can't Dance" versus "The Missing Piece", "Giant for a Day", "Civilian"), so it's Gentle Giant!!!

12-11 for Genesis. I'm in the process of getting into GG. They are really good but I don't see them ever matching Genesis (Gabriel-era that is). I haven't yet found a GG song as beautifully melodic as "Carpet Crawlers" or "Musical Box".

IF YOU ARE MORE INTO PHYMPHONIC PROGRESSIVE ROCK THEM GENESIS
BUT IF ARE INTO COMPLEX FUSION PROGRESSIVE ROCK THEM GENTLE GIANT!!!
BOTHS WERE TWO GREAT BANDS !!!!
TOOO BAD GENESIS BECAME SUCH A POP BAND IN THE 80'S
AND GENTLE GIANT IF AM NOT MISTAKING DISBAND IN THE 80'S RIGHT BEFORE THE END OF GLORY DAYS OF PROG)
I WOULD NOT SAY THAT GENESIS IS BETTER. ITHINK THAT IS MATTER OF WHAT I SAID AT THE BIGINNING!!!! AND A MATTER OF THE TASTE OF THE MUSIC , VOCALIST AND MUSICIANS..
FREE HAND IS AN EXCELLENT ALBUM AS WELL AS TRICK OF THE TAIL!!!!! JUST TO METION 2 OF THEIR BEST!!!!!

But the best album for me is Acquiring The Taste (by GG).

Very different bands.. I'm actually more familiar with Gentle Giant than Genesis, and while I dont like some GG stuff (In a glass house , for example) they get my vote.

hmmm...
Genesis is obviously the more important, influential group
but who's better....
Gentle Giant hits me hard intellectually, really the only song to hit
the other side of my brain was Schooldays which tugs at the emotions of
remembering long lost friends, and carefree days long past
Genesis hits the emotions hard, but never really felt....challenged.
toss up

just glacing through some of the other sections here at PA's, I can see
why some people don't like these kind of threads. I mean really,
can two groups be more dissimilar than Gentle Giant and Genesis.
Now if we were talking about two groups who have been accused of being
'mathematical and souless' like..... Gentle Giant and King Crimson that
might be a bit more interesting.

Mathematical and souless, King Crimson? They might be virtuosic but I am not sure soulless is the right word to use in this instance.

"Soulfulness" depends a whole lot on the music itself: the more complex the composition, the harder it is to fit emotion in there. It's a lot easier to pour your soul into a simple minor blues-type thing than some 20th century serialist composition.

Ahh... a tricky one, but although I'm more familiar with Genesis there's only one album by them I love all the way through, and GG are also more adventurous, so they'll get my vote.

I never could get into Gentle Giant; too leftfield for me.
Im a huge Genesis fan, so this was quite easy .I prefer their sense of good solid songwriting much more than Gentle Giant`s complexity.

Unlike the YES/Genesis thread this one is a bit harder although as reitterated before Genesis is my all time favorite group of all time, Gentle Giant's music was extremely challenging, but not in a bad way, and quite virtuostic..... Many great albums and timeless songs... Their influence is now being shown in bands like Anglagard, Spock's Beard and Echolyn....

Genesis. One has to try to like GG - a definitive minus in my book.
Proggers had me going fo awhile thinking that having to desperately try
to like music was in fact a plus, until I heard jazz critics note that they're
less impressed with artists who only appeal to die-hard jazz enthusiasts.
It was then I realized that I too am less impressed with these types of
artists. GG, who fall into this category, are certainly talented, though. And
I like their albums alright.
Plus Genesis is so epic.

Early Genesis were good, but I rate Gentle Giant equally high as Gesualdo, Beethoven, Stravinsky and suchlike, all composers who really found a totally new path. So Gentle Giant above any other prog band, but this poll is a bit unfair to Genesis.

Very difficult choice, because they're both on my top three...If I had
to say progressive with a band I'd choose Gentle Giant, and also think
Genesis have never done an album like In a glass house, and in the end
Genesis betrayed their noble origins...despite it all in this moment I
go with Genesis, expecially because I find a bit of them in amost every
band I'm listening to. What would have been prog without Genesis??

Gentle Giant, and it has nothing to do with how virtuostic they are. GG's music affects me emotionally much more than Genesis's music does. And Genesis's music definitely doesn't have the excitement of GG's music.
