| Interetsing, both great bands if neither quite my favourites, allows me to try and be objective....Gentle Giant have done the more radical, progressive stuff yet...at their very best, Genesis produced (IMHO) the better music...so I vote for them. |

| 12-11 for Genesis. I'm in the process of getting into GG. They are really good but I don't see them ever matching Genesis (Gabriel-era that is). I haven't yet found a GG song as beautifully melodic as "Carpet Crawlers" or "Musical Box". |

My personal favourite group of the two is Genesis. But the best album for me is Acquiring The Taste (by GG).

hmmm... Genesis is obviously the more important, influential group but who's better.... Gentle Giant hits me hard intellectually, really the only song to hit the other side of my brain was Schooldays which tugs at the emotions of remembering long lost friends, and carefree days long past Genesis hits the emotions hard, but never really felt....challenged. toss up ------------- The Pedro and Micky Experience - When one no longer requires psychotropics to trip |

just glacing through some of the other sections here at PA's, I can see
why some people don't like these kind of threads. I mean really,
can two groups be more dissimilar than Gentle Giant and Genesis.
Now if we were talking about two groups who have been accused of being
'mathematical and souless' like..... Gentle Giant and King Crimson that
might be a bit more interesting.

| "Soulfulness" depends a whole lot on the music itself: the more complex the composition, the harder it is to fit emotion in there. It's a lot easier to pour your soul into a simple minor blues-type thing than some 20th century serialist composition. |

I never could get into Gentle Giant; too leftfield for me. Im a huge Genesis fan, so this was quite easy .I prefer their sense of good solid songwriting much more than Gentle Giant`s complexity. |

Unlike the YES/Genesis thread this one is a bit harder although as reitterated before Genesis is my all time favorite group of all time, Gentle Giant's music was extremely challenging, but not in a bad way, and quite virtuostic..... Many great albums and timeless songs... Their influence is now being shown in bands like Anglagard, Spock's Beard and Echolyn....

Genesis. One has to try to like GG - a definitive minus in my book.
Proggers had me going fo awhile thinking that having to desperately try to like music was in fact a plus, until I heard jazz critics note that they're less impressed with artists who only appeal to die-hard jazz enthusiasts. It was then I realized that I too am less impressed with these types of artists. GG, who fall into this category, are certainly talented, though. And I like their albums alright. Plus Genesis is so epic. |

Early Genesis were good, but I rate Gentle Giant equally high as Gesualdo, Beethoven, Stravinsky and suchlike, all composers who really found a totally new path. So Gentle Giant above any other prog band, but this poll is a bit unfair to Genesis. |

That's exactly what happened to me, I heard of how good GG was and dl all their albums ; i listened to each like 4 times, and just hated them... i cannot stand to listen to Gentle Giant for even a second now. |

Gentle Giant, and it has nothing to do with how virtuostic they are. GG's music affects me emotionally much more than Genesis's music does. And Genesis's music definitely doesn't have the excitement of GG's music. ------------- Your life or your lupins!!! |
