Hi.
Just wanted to know wich guitarist you think is the greatest shedder of all time. Might not be prog-related, but I found no other suitable place to post this. I voted for Jason Becker. What he did at his age beefore he got sick is just unbeliveable.
It is said to be the first Test-pressing of the corean release??

Hmm, in that list I think Satriani, Petrucci and Vai are the best.

Herman Li, the Dragonforce guitarist is also a great shredder.

Malmsteen is the high priest of shred. But Satriani, Vai and Petrucci are dam good as well.

If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!

I've never heard Brian Setzer... Always thought he was like a country-style singer/songwriter. Guess I have to check him out.

To me, it doesn't get more shread than this.

Shawn Lane shredded with a level of creativity and precision I have never seen before. Sure raw speed is nice, but in the end that music is very shallow. Shawn Lane was definitely the best "shredder" there ever was. Those of you voting otherwise are uneducated.

Sadly this attitude is quite common on these boards...

Perhaps, but it is still the truth. He is a better shredder than the ones mentioned. I wouldn't say it with such confidence if I wasn't absolutely sure of it. Buckethead himself regards him as the best guitarist ever to have lived, and Buckethead knows what he's talking about.

There is no such thing as a good shredder.

Mindlessly fast playing is a waste of time; when you judge a guitarist by "number of notes per second" it's simply time to give up.

Most great guitarists can shred if they want (Hackett can play as fast as anyone on that list (witness his incredible acoustic playing), but he doesn't waste his time simply churning out notes at maximum rate). For another guitarist who could play with incredible speed and combine it with taste and delicacy, listen to Eric Bell on the original Thin Lizzy version of "Whiskey in the Jar" and compare it with the somewhat ham-fisted imitation by Kirk Hammett on the Metallica covers album. Jan Akkerman could also play incredibly fast when he chose (see him live for proof) but it was pointless, so he only did it occasionally.

Don't get me wrong; some on that list are excellent guitarists but don't judge them just on speed. Indeed, John Petrucci would improve so much if he slowed down and inserted some emotion!

Many of those guitarists are not "shredders" at all.  Malmsteen is probably the most recognized for his shred, with Vai and satriani close behind.  of those three I like Satriani the best, because Malmsteen's shredding is pretty useless, and steve Vai's persona is just way too flashy for me.

However, I voted for Buckethead because he's just crazy.  Most of his solo work is good, but everything he does with Les Claypool is beyond amazing.

I'd have to go with John Petrucci.  There are many shread guitarist, but few have the clarity that Petrucci has.  Guys like Friedman and Becker are excellent shredders, but they lack the precision that Petrucci has.
