My favourite is 'Hoedown'  although I expect 'Fanfare....' to win.

I was looking for "Trilogy", I forgot about Greg Lake singing a bit on that one! Begs the question what consitutes an instrumental. For example, is Pink Floyd's "One of these days" an instrumental? Guess that's a whole new topic though.Wink

Almost chose "Bolero", but went for "Fanfare".

The Old Castle/Blues Variation is my fave... Emerson's Moog and Hammond fiery pyrotechnics, Lake's bass is rough and precise, and Palmer's drumming is archetypical. The perfcect sample for a newbie!!

Fanfare For The Common Man was my vote. Emerson gets into some wierd time signatures on this one. Works is one of my favourite ELP albums. No, it is my favourite ELP album. It showcases the individual talents of the three members including Carl.Fanfare For The Common Man was a Olympic main theme as well.

I can't decide, but I should mention that I much prefer their instrumental pieces as the vocals are not always 100%. (sorry Greg, love your voice on From the Begining)

Fanfare is right on top so far!

Tank and Toccata with only one vote each (so far) surprises me.Fanfare is always popular for some reason.It never veers much off a strict tempo which to my ears makes it the least 'prog sounding' instrumental ELP did.

I voted for Tank, although it's quite a difficult choice as I really like Abbadon's Bolero, Hoedown and Toccata. ELP's version of Fanfare is OK, but I prefer the original.

Hoedown always takes me back to watching hockey and hearing the organist play this tune. I really enjoyed ELP's version. Fun and energetic. Fanfare second.

I'm surprised that no one else picked THe Barbarian from the first self-titled album. I used to play that album and Tarkus over and over while reading The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I could have gone with Tank or Hoedown, I did pick Tank, because for 2 days, no one voted on it; the ending, is fantastic as well;  An exceptional live rendition is on Welcome back my friends as well.

Songs like Just take a pebble seem to be barely out of the category of being an instrumental.

Fanfare is very well done, maybe it has been so popular, I did not think of voting for it. That said, I think, it was ELP's rendition that made it the modern day classic it is, all respect due to Copeland.

I hope I get all my facts correct in what I state here.

I'm not sure whether Copeland's 'Fanfare For The Common Man' became more popular as a peice of music after ELP did their version.It certainly brought it to wider public attention and you often hear the intro from ELP's version played at sporting events... so quite possibly yes.

i like blues variation, beacuse it a true improvisation based on the notes and feelings of the main event (say, pictures at an exhibition) and actually is the only time that i have heard it after that record
