Can't give one song that defines prog (although if pushed CTTE might be
the nearest thing...). Can maybe give a song that is a good example of
prog.
On that basis I'd suggest something like: Heart of the Sunrise, Firth of Fifth, or maybe Starless.
Assuming the audience is not familiar with prog the suggestion of "Gates of Delirium" is a bit risky.....

Why not going back to the source and play "In The Court of The Crimson King" side one?
1) 21st Century Schizoid Man
Starts with weird whispered noise, then suddenly explodes in a mix of jazz, rock and pionnering electronic effects to finish in a delirium of sounds. Rythm changes are frequent and unexpected.

From furor to accoustic gentleness, from distorted guitars and saxes to aerial flute and typical "prog" countertime drumming, merging into

That's all prog, for sure

To me, that smacks a bit of "prog-elite"!  I think it's a great track but it is an acquired taste and I don't think it's particularly representative.
I also have memories of playing it in 6th form school common room and boy, did it bomb.

I agree to an extent...it seems a Medley or a series of extracts set up
as a suite would work better to convey the overall mindset of the
format. Something to allow for multiple songs within one...

Another suggestion: you play "YMCA" by Village People. Then you play anything else. whatever you play next will sound prog

I don't think you can define a whole genre through a single song. Anyway, if I were to choose, I'd pick KC's Epitaph - at least as far as symphonic prog is concerned.

In the Court of the Crimson King as an Archetypical prog song

The one song for me that would sum up prog really well is `Heart Of The Sunrise.' This is one track that is alternately gorgeous and frenetic. Yet within the frenzied parts, the musicianship is quite controlled.The soft passages of `Love comes to you' are anice contrast to the blazing guitar riff by Mr. Howe. And Bruford`s drums are controlled ,yet dynamic. As good as Alan White is,he has never been able to better Bruford`s playing on this track, especially with all the paradiddles Bruford undergoes. Squire`s bas splaying is exemplary , Wakeamn`s mellotron is ethereal and atmospheric, and this is one of Jon Anderson`s best vocal performaces. He`s very low key on the first few verses, and on the last verse,his vocal performance simply soars like clouds above the heavens.. Wonderful track. If someone were to ask me what prog is about, I wouldn`t say a word and point that person in the direction of listening to this.. |

you shouldn't try and pick a song you should go for an album that defines it - in other words - Court of the Crimson King - mind you it probably needs 'On The Run' by Pink Floyd to completely make it the piece.

God, by group would have been easier! I agree that not one song defines the genre - perhaps an album (or am I getting myself into deeper waters there??!)
For me, it would be between Close To The Edge, Supper's ready or even Awaken.

"The Advent of Panurge" is the first song I had heard by Gentle Giant
and the song that inspired me to check out all the other offerings of
classic prog.
Though Relayer was the first prog album I had ever listened to.
If the topic was on album instead of song I'd probably choose Relayer.

This would get my vote too. I saw the Yes tribute band Fragile last night. The one piece that my hair stand on end was during a medley when they made the transition from "the fish" into Gates of Delirium including the "soon" passage. Despite playing the whole Close to the Edge album, it was Gates that was the all too brief highlight.
Superb show all round by the way. Two and a half hours of live Yes played by excellent musicians.

Supper's Ready or Heart of the Sunrise. Flip a coin. Both of these
songs hold so much of what Prog is and what it can do. I have used both
to expose many people to Prog. I have also used A Passion Play which
would fit either song or album catagory.
