i think they always give a different atmosfer in their firs album to the another.
at the drive in is good, sparta is too pop, but mars volta is the masterpiece.

They're well worth checking out, I got into them following reviews and comments I read on this site. Both "De-Loused" and "Frances" are good, you may find DeLoused a little easier to get into, although Frances has more obvious "prog" connotations (like a 30+ minute track "Cassandra Gemini").

Very difficult to classify them!

I've forgot about these guys for quite a while.

Back when they first started i got their Tremulant EP, played it every day and went crasy over what i was listening to. As expected, noone but me seemed to like it (quoting: "don't you ever get bored of all that freaked-out music and all that prog you're listening to?").

And then, i moved on, been in the army for my national service, finished that, came back, started working... And on one of my vinyl orders from America, the land of Cheap Vinyls, i noticed on the "New Stuff" section of the e-shop i was ordering from: THE MARS VOLTA. Didn't really think about it, i just ordered all three new items i've never seen/heard before of.

So, i've started melting Tremulant again and biting my nails waiting for the vinyls [De-loused/Frances/Frances EP] to arrive. I don't want to download any mp3's or anything but can't help reading the reviews...

I liked Frances The Mute a lot. But I disliked L'Via L'Viaquez.

As someone pointed out, THE MARS VOLTA requires some getting in the mood to listen to it, since it is so crazy and energetic.

TMV have a bit of metal in them, but not what most people consdider metal to be.  The heaviness comes more from how intense the music is.  This is reflected on Frances more than De-Loused.  I'd say get De-Loused first, then pick up Tremulant and Frances if you like them.  They can be abit like musical crack if you don't know what to expect .

I saw em live on the De-Loused tour. The live version of 'Cicatriz ESP' must have been about 40mins long. Great show, but maybe that particular track was a little too long.

Excellent definition: A pastiche… and if I might add:

Anyone remember Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) based on a George Orwell's book? - On this fable, TMV are The Dogs, The Media are Pigs, and The Customers are The Sheep. One inspiring day TMV crafted beautiful dung, and The Media said:

-“Oh… what a nice smell..!  It’s really good stuff, let’s sell it”
.

The first Sheep “catching the spirit” bought the first manure and told to the second Sheep:

- “Oh, I’ve got the most beautiful stuff that I’ve ever seen”

And told to the third Sheep...

-----

Message:

This is an “Animal Farm”, if we don’t choose what we eat… But, who knows..? Paradoxically, Pink Floyd is one of rock’s successful acts, having sold one zillion albums worldwide… But, this is another tale…

Anyway, I can’t stop you buying the music that you like…(The Media’s rulez ) Enjoy them...

Take care...

I saw Mars Volta last night at the System Of A Down show in Seattle. I was pretty excited to see them having been a fan since 'De-Loused'. I hate to report that it was a confusing, rambling jumble.
They must have had ten members of the band on stage (how do they make money with that size band?) playing everything from shakers to flute to samplers. I admired they're desire to keep it as close to the full sound of the albums, but it came off as a wall of noise.
In truth they were really more like a very heavy Grateful Dead than anything else. They played 50 min. and really only did 4 songs. I can dig that. But when the songs are as shapeless and repetitive as what they were playing, it becomes mind numbing. I was really hoping they would end.
That being said, there were some good moments. Every once in a while a familiar melody would break through, and the singers voice was in excellent condition. Sounded much better and more controlled(?) live than on the studio releases.
Buy the albums. Buyer beware of the live show.

I like Deloused ... than Frances..

Well, yes it's little bit difficult to describe their music though. But if you like badly-destorted sounds [from vocal to guitar..] and if you like moody-kind of music ..in term of changing mood all the time, then you will like it.

The best thing is that the druming, I found is very great and powerful.

I DISCOVE THE MARS VOLTA THROGH THIS WEB SITE AND I SIMPLY LOVE THEM FOR THE SEVERAL REASONS:

THEY SOUNDS REMIND ME OF SOME OF MY FAVORITE BANDS!!!!!

PINK FLOYD (ANIMALS- ATOM HEART MOTHER)

KING CRIMSON (LARK -RED AND THE IMPRO SIDE))

SANTANA ( ONENESS, BORBOLETTA,WELCOME CARAVANSERAI)

UNIVERS ZERO ( EARLY ALBUMS)

FRANK ZAPPA (A LOT 70'S ZAPPA)

AND THEIR OWN STUFF ( VERY INDUSTRIAL, SOME SONGS ARE VERY EXPERIMENTAL)

THE MARS VOLTA IS A BAND THAT WHILE YOU LISTEN TO THIEIR MUSIC YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. THEY ARE MAKING VERY INTESESTING AND EVERY TIME YOU HEAR IT, IT IS LIKE BRAND NEW MUSIC TO YOUR EARS. ONE OF THE BAND THESE DAYS. THEIR LYRIC SWILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!!

THEY THIS GREAT NOISE MUSIC THAT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

FRANCE THE MUTE 5/5

DE LOUSE 5/5

TREMULANT (EP) 5/5 (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
