So you can't stream music to your computer, unless you have a broadband? How does that feature work? |
It's not a "feature". Simply put, you CAN stream music without broadband, but it takes forever, and you can only listen to bits and pieces of the song in 20-second segments with long pauses between, since the bits and bytes can only be sent to the listener at the rate that the dialup connection is physically able to provide. If it takes 15 minutes to download a 5 minute track, you will be listening to ~20 seconds of song followed by ~40 seconds of silence followed by the next ~20 seconds of song, etc., for 15 minutes.

I actually hadn't tried other bands, thinking that if the Marillion one
wasn't working, none of the others would be. However, I've now
randomly selected a few bands with the following results: the playlists
for Nightwish and Porcupine Tree don't load, while the Jethro Tull
playlist loads, but I can't get it to play.

I only used the mp3's on the site as a barometer for music that I wasn't familiar with. Most were dl'd,listened to,and deleted,so I don't mind the streaming at all.I listened to a few tunes this morning and had no problems with the stream, and they started playing instantly.

Well, just played Marillion fine using Firefox 1.0.7.
Still not really a fan of streaming but if those mega rich b*st*rds who
run record companies feel they are losing SO much money by people
downloading a few sample tracks then i guess there isn't really a
choice is there...!
A lot of these media companies (TV, Film and Music) will have to adapt to the internet sooner or later.
BTW, I think you did a good job implementing the streaming function, it's one of the better one's I've seen.

Works fine here and looks good but are you going to change the look a bit to fit in with the rest of the page?

So, Cuneiform objected? Rather silly of them considering that I mail ordered many of their releases in the past and only a few remains in my possession. More importantly, they are amongst the reasons why I won't buy through recommendations anymore - unless I can sample what's on offer....
Sadly, Cuneiform is off my agenda as it is.

Of all companies, Cuneiform would be one of the last I'd suspect of objecting to this.

Sorry for not getting back to you M@X, I'd left for home before your messages came through.
I'm using Firefox 1.0.7, so I don't think that's the problem. The
connection speed could be the problem. I've no idea what it is -
I'm working at a university, and using their internet connection, so I
suppose it's faster than the average South African connection, but it's
not blindingly fast. Although I was able to listen to Welcome
Home from Coheed and Cambria's official site, so I don't know why that
works, and PA doesn't.

Can't you simply cater for the complaining labels? I hear if you snip 10 seconds off a song, that makes it a sample - therefore it's legal. Could you do that for the bands in question and leave the other bands as it is?

There is no such rule ... even a 1 second clip doesn't automatically qualify as a legal sample. Although it's very unlikely that someone would complain about it.
