I´ve just listened to a song and sounds good... are they good enough to buy the CD?, what other bands are similar to them?, what kind of music do they play?

..You´re not alone...

Definitely worth buying if you like loud, complex psychedelic rock. I recommend their first album Deloused In The Comatorium if you're just getting into them, then move on to their less accesible (but ultimately brilliant) album Frances The mute

Depends on who you ask. IMO frances the mute is overall a better album but theres too much ambient noise for my liking. Theyre both excellent albums though.

My first exposure to the was Frances the Mute. I initially liked it, but my love for it grew and grew each time I listened to it.

I wouldn't be in a rush to buy any Mars Volta album.

If Possible, listen to more than one song, because this is a very difficult group to approach, and even if it sounds cool at first, maybe you will regret spending your money on one of their cds...

I'm not saying they're bad, but that they are very strange sounding and complex, so listen carefully and decide if they satisfy your taste.

Maybe, you can do like I do: I seldom download an album that catch my curiosity, I listen to it several times and, if I like it, I buy it; if not, I trash and forget about it...

Buy "Deloused..." without hesitation. It's some of the freshest
rock you'll hear since about a decade, the guitarist is very good,
shades of Howe and Fripp there, and they're very tight.
Reminds one of the shock at first hearing "Fragile" when it
came out, and Yes still had an edge.

Great, great band, maybe the best new one I hear from a long time.
Both albums (and singles :D) are extremely worth buying, prog rock with the strenght of punk\hardcore. Great musicianship. Extremely good use of effects and synths.
Dangerous to be closely minded by a closed mind.
Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata - the ultimate attempt at you will to listen.

There's only two studio albums right now, so get them both. Start with Delosed, I think it's the best as an introduction. Then Frances, it's a bit harder to get into and comprehend as a whole, IMO.

I really have to check out TMV. I keep saying that but am always putting it
off.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

The Mars Volta is a band you either love to death or hate with a passion. I belong to the first group.

I'm sure a bunch of knuckleheaded nu-metalers would think The Mars Volta suck. But remember who is saying it and ask yourself if you actually value their opinions. I think not.

Get both cds. For one thing they go for $9.99 at the record stores. Pretty cheap purchase. Even if it is not quite your thing, it is cool to have them as an addition to your prog collection.

Actually, a lot of my Nu-Metal friends love this band (I played Deloused in the Comatorium for them).

As a hard-core, semi-old (32) classic progger who has found most modern groups to be disappointing, I'm pleased to affirm that I lurve TMV ...

Start with Deloused first ... still the one I prefer ..

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I've only got Frances the Mute, which I bought on the strength of some very positive reviews. I can't say I listen to it very often, as I have to be in the mood for that - it's not an album you can put on as background music when you do something else! Anyway, they're an extremely tight band and their music is quite unique. I can understand people hating them, but I'll admit to definitely liking them ('love' would be too strong a word for the time being). I'd recommend them, although with some caution.
