Isn't Pictures at an Exhibition a concept album, whether by ELP or other artists, after all it is about a walk through an art gallery (correct me once agin if i'm wrong).

Yes Mussorgsky wrote the piece based on an art exhibition of one of his friends works - you can see some of the pictures here I suppose that can be regarded as a concept album - perhaps we need a new category Progressive Classical! |

Savatage has some of the best stories in their concepts. Streets is a
good album, but Dead Winter Dead is my favorite story. It is about 2
people from different sides in Yogoslavia, One battle forthe moslums
and the other for the christians. It does not take sides. Paul Oneil
who writes the lyrics and story showed a true sence of what it is like
to be apart of it. It is not some fantasy story but a look at a
horrable time in our own true recent history. It has very heavey
agressive guitar work. Some of the best lead. To pieces with orchestra.
It flows nicely and can really move you. One child has a vocal layering
segment that can almost make you cry. It is about a soldgier who comes
a school hit by a bomb and sees whats left. As a father myself it is
very heart wrenching. Savagate may not have the same musical prowless
as DT, but this to me is true concept tht a much more meaningful story
then Scenes.

My current personal fave is Genesis' "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." It is such a great album with more and more to delve into everytime you listen to it Other current faves include; Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta, Nude by Camel & Tales From The Topographic Ocean by Yes. You gotta buy them all and they will all be a big step up from Tommy!!

I'm sorry, but I would have to disagree with you. It's true that there are a lot of metal bands who sing exclusively about death, violence and destruction, but there are also a few who tackle more more 'intellectual' topics. Talking about concept albums, there are two great ones made by metal bands: namely, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden and of course the majestic Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche. The subject matter of both is not what you would call cheerful, nevertheless it has very little to do with gratuitous 'violence and destruction'. As to other concept albums I would recommend, obviously there's the Pink Floyd 'triple whammy' of Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, the two already mentioned by the Who and Thick as a Brick. |

WHAT?!?! you prefer THAT version to the film version?!?! very strange...I've listened to both and I undoubtedly prefer the film version: the singers are all in great shape, the re-done parts are way better (especially Pilate and Mary Magdalene), and Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson are amazing!!!! (maybe because besides being singers, they were also actors...and so they ACT WHILE SINGING!!!)... |

dear jean, I'm so sorry to hear something like that from YOU!!!! I really don't think metal is all about destruction and violence or whatever, it is just music with a heavier sound! There's a lot of clever metal out there, ever heard of Living Colour? And, about what you said on the different kinds of moods, metal DOES imply the use of "dynamics"... ...you don't know what an electric guitar can do!!! (I'm sure you know, I'm just kidding) |

A few that I haven't seen mentioned yet, and which I'd recommend, are:
Tales Of Mystery & Imagination (The Alan Parsons Project) Claude Monet Vol. 1 1883-1889 (XII Alfonso) The Eye Of Wendor (Mandalaband) ...none of which are prog metal. |

SF Sorrow by the Pretty Things. More psychedelic than prog. However still enjoyable and full of mellotron.

Before there was Tommy, the Who recorded a mini-opera called "A Quick
One" - it occupies half of side two of an album by the same name. I heard it performed live by the group on a revolving stage at the Sydney Stadium in 1967. As far as concept albums go, I favour Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play". Taa |

I would definately say just go for all Floyd "Meddle" thru "The Wall" Rush - 2112, Hemispheres Yes - Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans Phish - Rift (no one has mentioned this one) Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play The Who - Quadrophenia Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite *** Although some of these are not considered concept albums, they are very conceptual |

you miss my point. if they don't sing about violence and destruction, then why the metal? it is the incongruency of lyrics and music that I dislike about most metal. with a band like VdGG you don't need to understand a word to get at least a vague impression of what the song is about; I seriously doubt this is possible with a metal band (unless they refrain from metal for a change) |

It doesn't have to be loud, or even agressive, to be "metal" - true, the vast majority of metal bands' music is more suited to negative emotions, but not always violence and destruction. It is also not uncommon for metal songs to have very quiet, reflective passages - even down to just an acoustic guitar for a few minutes. Metallica were doing this twenty years ago and there wasn't anything to do with a concept there. I'm sure you don't want to listen to an example , but "One" or "To Live is to Die" from the record "And Justice For All" have long stretches of completely passive and undestructive music Edited by goose |
