In generally speaking, I do not think Prog is any exception.

For example, besides Prog, I hear other things (heavy stuff of Rock & Metal). Lately I've been interested in what lots of the girls whom I go to parties with currently listening to, so I spoke with lots of them and all of them said like the easy stuff.
So perhaps finding a girl who enjoys Prog is rarer than finding girls who like Heavy\Trash\Doom\Death\Death (genres like that) but I still do not think it should be considered as an exeption... There are some things of which we men only like and females won't and it's not prog only.

Besides, you're complaining about girls, but you do not know how hard it is for a high-school student (such as me) to find others who actually KNOW of the existence of the Prog genre.
I talk to lots of people of my age and they're mostly hearing stuff like System of a Down. What is actually funny is when a friend of mine gave me to hear some System's songs on his MP3 and he told his other friend to wants me to be exposed to some good music, when the first time I heard System was couple of years before the 'music understanding guys group' in my school has even heard about them, not to mention that their understanding about music is rather lacking.

soo.. I do not care much about it. even when I put on some metal my female friends do not think of it as much as I do..
Just let it go and let them hear those awfully bands.. bah.. Greenday :/

Awww, don't be! Men are wonderful for the most part. Some women just get too easily ticked off by rather harmless, disparaging comments on their gender that are in any case often made tongue-in-cheek. Women do the same in regards to men, after all, and that seems to be fine. More serious sexism -the kind that is sanctioned  by the society at large- should not be encouraged, of course, but I have found very little signs of that on Progarchives.

I'm rather laid-back when it comes to gender-issues (as interesting and fascinating as I do find them) and the reason for this is that I don't really think of myself from a gender point of view, not consciously at least... Perhaps I ought to get more in touch with my feminine side?

Don't disparage your own gender, Ray - remember that for all our shortcomings, we make the lives of women better in many significant ways:

  • Removing spiders from the bathroom
  • Getting things down from high shelves
  • Unscrewing the lids of jam jars and sauce bottles

Let's face it, where would civilisation be without contributions like that?

In fact my girlfriend has to take care of the spiders, at least if they have long legs. But I get rid of the bees. Now that is co-work or what.

She is a bit taller than me, too. But at least she leaves the unscrewing for me.

Well I'm new to this forum, I am a female and love prog. I came across this site last year some time, but didn't feel the need to forum up, but a few days ago I realised, what the hell!?
so here I am, and it is cool

I play an online game, I am the ONLY girl who actively plays it in this country, lol.... so I am familiar with this situation of high testerone levels, but it's quite sad to see that most of you think women buy whatever is on the radio, I hate that generalisation especially if it is applied to me. WATCH OUT!.. though I suppose it is a rarity to see females interested in prog (I'm trying to get my friends into it) I'd have to say DT got me into prog, amazing stuff! That lead on to Liquid Tension Experiment... Fantomas.... (Im going to go see them in 2 weeks!!! Exciting!)
I love being different, I love not listening to the radio and other mainstream dribble, music is so much apart of me I couldn't see my self being with someone that doesn't like prog or metal for that matter. I'm really for 'common interest' relations! havn't found anyone yet though..

As for one of you who mentioned feminate nicknames, mine is short for rebecca... close enough.
Anyway, why should we have to have a feminiate aura about our nickname? Isn't it better not to see:
"sexy_bunny39832479"
"high_maintenance_girl_$$"
"lovely_lucy"
"crazychickonacid"
"2Hot4U_BABE"

arggghhh at cliches!

I think I could count up to 20 women posting in the PA , which is way too few, and most of them are discreet. Threefates , Friede and Jean are the most visible members of feminine persuasion and they provide a welcome more feminine touch. There should a lot more of them , not just because we need them to cool the manners of young men, but also because I should think that there are no solid reasons for not liking this kind of music , if they tried a bit to get an interest.

Most of us progheads grieve at the fact that prog has too few women liking it and going to concerts. Most of us grieve at the fact that our partner does not like our music although we would love to share this passion with them - ie: the famous sentence: "Prog? That's the crap my husband listens to!". Actually , I am not faring too badly and most of my friends (who have women that fits them - meaning that they are well assorted as a couple) have spouses and girlfriends that also listen to it, although it is clear they would've never got to that music without the help of their man. I am inclined to think that should most of these couples break up , the woman would still lend an ear to prog, thus meaning that they did not listen to it just to please their man.

However , (I maybe generalizing here) for women , music is not seen with the same viewpoint. They consider music in a more festive manner. Music is for dancing, rejoicing and ultimately attract a mate. Of course , they listen to music, but are more inclined to buy what they hear on the radio.

An anecdote:

I once got mad my best female friend by saying that I thought that for a woman , my partner's vinyl collection was not too bad (my partner has in her collection some Floyd , one Yes , a few Queen , some Supertramp , early ELO , The Carpenters etc... but also some of crap  especially those cheap made for TV collections of hits from a given year etc...)!

My friend thought that this was a terribly sexist comment from me! I spend almost half an hour explaining why I thought that the comment  was not sexist , maybe it was musical snobbery but not really sexism! She finally agreed to it , but I also explained that her extraordinary collection for a woman (she has over 3000 records , mostly rock , blues , prog , some fusion etc...) and that her musical tastes were one of the reason we were friends (and being an occasional lover another one) amongst the many other reasons!

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Well I'm a woman and I have a boy friend too :D

Perhaps prog is a genre that requires something more than rap .. so men who enjoy it have some qualities. To be honest I wouldn't like a man who does NOT like prog

I'll have to agree with that - can't fold maps either. I do the driving, the navigating and have to put up with back seat driving from someone who hasn't even passed her test - yet. When she does I'll enjoy sitting in the passenger seat for a change.

maps can be folded?

There's an unwritten rule that once a map's been unfolded, no matter how hard you try and follow the folds, you'll never get it back to its original flat, folded state.

No, thats just a myth!

A mythtake!
