I personally really like Dream Theater- they are one of my favourite bands. But for the most part, I do not enjoy their lyrics. I find them bland, uninspired and downright lame sometimes. I'd rather try to figure out what Ian or Jon Anderson is saying (and I gave up on that a long time ago).

I only own Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance and I am totally fine with their lyrics on that lp. Good album.

I'd be allright
Because I believe

I used to be frightened of dying

But that was before
I'm not scared anymore
I know that my soul will transcend

I may never find all the answers
I may never understand why
I may never prove
What I know to be true
But I know that I still have to try

If I die tomorrow
I'd be allright
Because I believe
That after we're gone

"Move on, be brave
Don't weep at my grave
Because I am no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear"

Nicholas:
Safe in the light that surrounds me
Free of the fear and the pain
My questioning mind
Has helped me to find
The meaning in my life again
Victoria's real
I finally feel
At peace with the girl in my dreams
And now that I'm here
It's perfectly clear
I found out what all of this means

If I die tomorrow
I'd be allright
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

WTF? No meaning? These are some of my favourite lyrics. This is some powerful stuff. Once again this all comes down to "It's Dream Theater... so it's crap".

If that's crap wtf did you waste your precious time typing it!  You have nothing better to do than write crap! (Crap as in according to you!) You must be crap yourself then dude!

It depends on the context.  If we are talking linear numbering you can't have 1,1.  If you are talking the actual series then yes.  Also, I didn't say it was the start of the series

DT's lyrics are hit and miss, for every song with good lyrics, you are almost guaranteed a song with bad ones. I for one like most of their lyrics, except for When Dream and Day Unite, that album doesn't have really great lyrics. They really did improve in quality over the years, though.

Learning To Live lyrics are AWSOME

Nearly All TOT lyrics are awsome,

John Myung is the actuall Niel PEART (LET THE BASHING BEGING!) well, not counting that Niel writes A LOT, and Myung, well doesn't.

The problem is that we don't get enought John Myung lyrics

THROUGH NATURES INFLEXABLE GRACE, I'M LEARNING TO LIVE

tell me that that's not awsome!

Never the less the best lyricsts ever is ROGER WATERS

iF I HAD SOMETHING INTERESTING TO SAY I WOULD SAY IT... I HATE THE BEATLES

I got it wrong myself then! Apologies my friend.  It seems like we are ones of the few that like DT in this forum.  Once again apologies!

Cheers

Hey, I'm a DT fan too...!  With refernce to their lyrics, I think we can safely say that they are well above average, whatever you think of their musical style... if 'Solitary Shell' from 6 Degrees isn't a vivid description of autism, and 'Losing Time' a vivid description of sexual abuse, I don't know what is... much more relevant and thought provoking than dungeons & dragons!!
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I love Dream Theater. Lots of their lyrics dont make sense, and some are downright cheesey...but c'mon...break it down.

DREAM
THEATER

dreams never make sense. and they are just a medium of dreams from the unconsious to the consious.

And look at the lyrics to "War Inside My Head/The Test That Stumped Them All"
just awesome.

I am not agreeing here, but let me for a moment here that DT lyrics are crap - Can you say the same for Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance - I mean that album is awsome.  The lyrics in that album tackle everyday problems which thankfully not all people face.  But for those who face these problems (myself included - Solitary Shell tackles a condition close to my family personally) this album can sometime show some hope.

Thanks

I don't go too deep into the meaning of the lyrics , moreso how the voice and the structure of the sounds of the words fit in with the other instruments. There is a word for this but I can't think of it at the moment.

And James LaBrie's voice is just superb.

Hehe...I wouldnt go that far...but John Myung is quite brilliant...
Trial of Tears...
Okay, it may be that good lyrically...but its a damn good song.

And Metropolis Pt. 2's lyrics are indeed powerful and awe-inspiring. I love them, no...I heart them.

Their lyrics are fine.

For me, anyway.

I'm still trying to work out what "The killing Hand"s lyrics are all about... Its something about war and rememberance which is definitely relevant and meaningful- but then it seems that someone looks back to the past and somehow changes it? I still can't quite understand what the hell most of the lyrics are about .
I don't even exist!
